As the leaves begin to change here on campus and the weather finally gets a bit cooler, we're highlighting some of the upcoming deadlines, important dates, and other things happening in Asian Studies!

Spring 2025 Advising: Soon!

Spring 2025 advising and registration is coming soon! Dr. Vaporis and Dr. Kim are looking forward to meeting with Asian Studies majors and have set up Calendly schedules for advising appointments later this month.

The Spring 2025 schedule will be available online on Oct 21 (two weeks from now), and students can register for classes as early as Oct 29. Get ready for your registration window now with three easy steps:

Look at your Degree Plan on myUMBC to determine what classes you still need to complete for your degree program.

Do you have an account hold? Holds can be placed for many reasons, and will often prevent you from registering for classes. You can check your student account status on myUMBC; if you do have a hold, contact Student Business Services for assistance with resolving it so that you can register!

Sign up for an advising appointment! Our website has all the details you'll need.

Winter 2025 Registration Begins Oct 14!

January will be here before you know it. Consider signing up to take a Winter Session course! Many are offered online or in a hybrid format, and this year, three of them are of particular interest for Asian Studies students:

ASIA 300: Modern East Asia - Prof. Kim - online/asynchronous

HIST 381: From Samurai to Salariman: Japanese History Through Film and Literature - Prof. Vaporis - online/asynchronous

MUSC 230: Musics of the World - Prof. Purdy - hybrid (main campus)

For more information about Winter Session, including dates and registration guidelines, visit the Winter 2025 website.

Study Abroad Scholarships Available!

Are you planning to study abroad in Asia in 2025? Asian Studies has a limited number of $1000 scholarships to help offset some of those costs!

This opportunity is available to Asian Studies majors and minors.

Apply by Nov 1 for Spring 2025, or February 10 for Summer/Fall 2025.
Register and Vote in the 2024 General Election

<Tagline>Maryland's Registration Deadline is Tuesday, October 15!</Tagline>

UMBC has a strong tradition of very active participation in state and national elections, with high student turnout. This year, Marylanders will elect a new U.S. Senator as well as other federal and state legislators, and will participate in electing the President and Vice President of the United States. The general election will take place on November 5, 2024, with early voting available from October 24 to October 31, 2024. Between now and then, if you are registered to vote in Maryland, you can cast your vote on the UMBC campus by requesting a mail ballot and depositing the completed ballot in the drop-off box located in the lobby of The Commons.

Register to vote: If you are an eligible Maryland resident, you can use the state's online portal to register. Maryland's deadline to register to vote in advance of the 2024 general election is Tuesday, October 15. Whether you live in Maryland or not, UMBC's voter registration portal can help you take the first steps to register and vote in your home state if you are eligible to do so.

Request a mail ballot, then vote in The Commons: Registered Maryland voters can complete an online request for a mail-in ballot here. Once you have received and completed your ballot, you can submit it by placing it in the official Board of Elections drop-off box in the lobby of The Commons (near the Campus Information Center desk). No postage is necessary. The Board of Elections will pick up ballots placed in the box multiple times each week. If you have questions about the mail ballot process, you can get help this Friday, October 11 from noon to 2 p.m. at a drop-in session in the AOK Library Gallery.

Make a pledge to vote: Every election year, UMBC participates in a national Pledge to Vote competition for university students across the country. UMBC placed #4 on the national leaderboard in 2022. Take the pledge, and spread the word.

Access Maryland and out-of-state voter resources: Find the latest information, including dates for early voting and deadlines to request mailed and electronic ballots, on the UMBC Center for Democracy and Civic Life website.

Serve as election judge: The Baltimore County Board of Elections is recruiting election judges to work at polling stations during the 2024 general election. These are paid positions and an important public service.

Participate in civic and community engagement programs: Whether you are eligible to vote or not, you have a stake in your communities and can play an important role in shaping them.
Retriever Essentials Receives Hunger-Free Campus Grant

Retriever Essentials has received a $18,360 Hunger-Free Campus Grant to support its student staff and programming. Hunger-Free Campus is a state grant program run by the Maryland Higher Education Commission that provides funding to Maryland public institutions of higher education and regional higher education centers to support efforts addressing food insecurity among students on Maryland campuses.

The purpose of the Hunger-Free Campus Grant Program is to:

• Address student hunger.

• Leverage more sustainable solutions to address basic food needs on campus.

• Raise awareness of services currently offered on campus that address basic food needs.

• Build strategic partnerships at the local, state, and national levels to address food insecurity among students.

Retriever Essentials will use the funding to cover our student stipends, including support for Michael Fakus, who co-leads the Student Leadership Board. The board works on innovative projects that fill gaps in our program, such as food literacy and cooking skills, which is addressed through the annual cooking competition that Retriever Essentials will be running again this spring in collaboration with the UMBC Alumni Association and Dining Services. The grant funds will also cover stipends for students who lead Retriever Essentials gardening initiative and who oversee the 15 Community Service and Learning Practicum (PRAC 096) students who pack up extra meals after lunch at True Grits three times per week.

Assistant Director of Retriever Essentials Ariel Barbosa, MPS '24, community leadership, shared, “We are excited about how the Hunger-Free Campus Grant expands our capacity to ensure our student leaders are compensated for their incredible work! A huge thank you to the state for providing the funding and to UMBC’s Office of Sponsored Programs for their support in the application process.”

Please note: Retriever Essentials needs your help in providing winter clothes for students! Donations can be brought to the Essential Space’s new location in The Commons (in the former PNC offices next to the Bookstore.) UMBC and The Wisdom Institute are also hosting a winter coat drive on Tuesday, October 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Administration Circle (next to the Administration Building and the Retriever Activities Center).
