Mentally Preparing Yourself for the Job Market *REPOST*
Learn how to tackle the job search with resiliency and care!
Leaving behind an academic career and navigating an ever-changing world of work takes preparation, motivation, and resilience. Retriever Integrated Health and the Career Center are partnering up to help students change the way they think about approaching the job market. In this workshop, students will learn about how to be efficient and strategic with their search, as well as how to persevere when things don't go as expected. Both graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to attend and consider what comes next in their careers, including any potential bumps along the way.

Volunteer for the UMBC Expungement Clinic on 10/17
Connect with attorneys and help make a difference too!
Students of all majors are invited to volunteer for the UMBC Expungement Clinic, co-sponsored by UMBC Pre-Law Advising and the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program, in partnership with Maryland Legal Aid and the Baltimore County Bar Association.
The UMBC Expungement Clinic will help Marylanders with prior criminal charges obtain free legal guidance and expungement services (if eligible), easing their path to attaining housing and employment.
Student volunteers will get to meet and work with volunteer attorneys and Maryland Legal Aid staff, and assist with the process of helping members of the community expunge their records.
UMBC Expungement Clinic
Date: Thursday, October 17, 2024
Time: There are two volunteer shifts: (1) 3:00 PM -5:30 PM and (2) 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
Location: UMBC's Erickson School of Aging Studies (at the Research Park), 5523 Research Park Drive; Suite 230
To maximize the overall number of student participants, students may volunteer for one shift only. Space is limited so sign up as soon as possible!
Food will be provided to all volunteers.
Note: Volunteers will be required to attend (or view the recordings of) two virtual training sessions prior to the event. Training information will be shared with all registered volunteers on or before September 30.

This event will feature four faculty members from core departments under the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences who will share key insights with undergraduates on how to best navigate the process of joining a research lab on campus. This is a great opportunity to gain tips and tricks directly from faculty members on how to find the right research lab for you, how to contact faculty members who you want to perform research with, the expectations of undergraduate researchers in a lab, and the best time to join a lab during your undergraduate career!

FROM NIEHS: Path to environmental engineering

Rick Woychik: What inspired you to pursue a research career?
Upal Ghosh: If I go back and think about it, my early childhood played a big role. My father worked in a research institute in a coal mining town called Dhanbad in Bihar, India. He was the head of the Health Division at the Mining Research Institute.
My father was a chemist by training, and he was researching the correlation between air pollution and cardiovascular disease in miners. I remember he had a jar with a preserved lung of a coal miner, and it was black from the coal dust. Seeing that black lung left a big imprint on me.
I watched my father on local rooftops, conducting air sampling, and then going to hospitals to collect data on cardiovascular disease to correlate with mining activities. I’m sure that had an impact on how I viewed the relationship between environmental health and human health. That interest grew over time.
I went on to study chemical engineering in Bombay. I’m an undergraduate chemical engineer by training, but I didn’t want to work in industry. I became more interested in the environment and nature, and I joined the nature club. My experiences led me to pursue environmental engineering.
I completed my master’s and Ph.D. in environmental engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Then I spent a few years at Stanford University with Dick Luthy, who was one of my greatest mentors, before being hired here at UMBC to start our environmental engineering program. We’ve made great strides over the past 22 years, and we have built a strong program here.
