    <div>Dear Colleagues,</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>We are writing to share with you the Fiscal Year 2025 salary guidelines, aligned with those received from the University System of Maryland for faculty and staff in Regular and Contingent II positions, together with UMBC's plan for implementing those guidelines.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>All Regular faculty and staff, Contingent II staff, and graduate assistants will receive a 3 percent COLA increase, effective July 1, 2024. Eligible employees must have been on the university payroll since June 30, 2024, to be eligible for the COLA.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Merit Increases</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>A 2.5 percent merit pool, effective July 1, 2024, will be distributed to each division and applies to Regular faculty and staff and Contingent II staff. Merit increases will be based on a PMP overall rating of "effective" or better for the rating period of April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2024 (if a PMP was not submitted for an eligible employee for that period, the overall rating will be considered "effective").</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Regular nonexempt staff must have completed original and/or promotional probation by June 30, 2024, to be eligible for the merit increase. Nonexempt staff on original and/or promotional probation will receive a 2.5 percent increase upon their successful completion of the probationary period.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Regular exempt staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 15, 2024, to be considered for a merit increase.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Contingent II staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 1, 2024, (nonexempt staff) or January 15, 2024, (exempt staff) to be considered for a merit increase.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Regular faculty must have accepted an offer prior to January 15, 2024, to be eligible for a merit increase.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Adjunct Increases</strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Adjunct faculty, who are employed on a course-by-course basis will receive a 3 percent increase over their Academic Year 2023 – 2024 per course payment rates upon contract renewal. The college standard rates will be increased 3 percent as well.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>If you have questions or need additional guidance, please consult your supervisor. Our continued thanks and appreciation to our entire community of faculty and staff for your ongoing dedication to UMBC.</div>

<Title>Congratulations to Zachary Margulies - Phi Kappa Phi</Title>

    <strong><span>Title of research: </span></strong>Building a Dialogue Classification System for Human-Robot Interaction</div>
    <div>
    <strong>Mentors: </strong>Cynthia Matuszek, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering   </div>
    <div>
    <strong>Abstract: </strong><span>Our work revolves around understanding and making use of the SCOUT (Situated Corpus of Understanding Transactions) data, a corpus of human-robot dialogue for an Urban Search &amp; Rescue scenario. In this dataset, a human “commander” gives instructions to a robot that is navigating an urban setting. We have conducted an extensive user study in which participants were asked to select the most appropriate robot action in response to a human instruction (sampled from the SCOUT data). We determined the classification accuracy of participant-selected robot actions compared to the corresponding real output performed by the robot. Then, using a random forest classifier we built a system to translate the human commands into robot actions. Treating the user study as a baseline, we evaluated the performance of our new classifier. In future studies, we will implement a more sophisticated transformer-based model to more effectively classify dialogue.</span>

    <strong>Abstract: </strong><span>When determining what are the factors of success, many often view having a job, having a place to live, and having access to transportation as common practice. However, there are numerous external and internal barriers that prevent certain groups from harnessing these pieces of general advice. Those who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and are between the ages of 18-24, in particular, are one of many marginalized groups who experience high difficulty in finding work, obtaining advice on housing, and utilizing any means of transportation. Furthermore, even when Autistic people manage to fall under at least one of these three realms, they often experience more workplace discrimination, housing discrimination, and limited means of transportation, in comparison to their neurotypical counterparts. This research is divided into three sections: the workplace, housing, and transportation. In order to identify how Autistic individuals fair in these three life-sectors in comparison to neurotypical people, I am analyzing eight academic peer-reviewed journals per topic in conjunction with a campus wide survey which will gather thirty responses anonymously from voluntary participants. From there, I will produce a three episode podcast to combine and relay these findings as part of a public humanities project.</span>
