Hello Retriever Entrepreneurs!

The UMBC Launchpad accelerator is a 9-week cohort-based program where ventures prepare to go from pre-launch to launch, or for early-stage companies, create a pathway to accelerate growth.

Founders who are ready to fully commit to launching their venture and have validated their idea as an opportunity should apply. Participants are awarded up to $8,000 in non-dilutive funding for seed capital ($4k after 1 month and $4k at the end). Mentors will be assigned to each team.

Teams will perform deep customer discovery, develop a business model canvas, and then progress to a full commercialization plan and pitch deck. The goals of the Launchpad are to validate product-market fit and to hopefully formalize the venture and launch.

TIMELINE

Applications are due TOMORROW April 30th at 5PM!

Demo day will be hosted in September

Weekly meetings are mandatory and will last 2-4 hours and will likely be Thursdays at 4pm

Learning objectives:

    • Develop familiarity with Lean LaunchPad concepts and tools such as customer discovery, value proposition design, and a lean business model canvas through the Leanstack model and platform.

    • Understand customers’ problems (“pain points”) from THEIR perspective

    • Identify modifications to your assumptions required to achieve product-market fit

    • Build connections to the commercial ecosystem (i.e. customers, suppliers, funders) for your innovation

    • Develop a commercialization roadmap identifying key milestones and required resources to move your idea forward

    • Explore the size of your potential market, assess the competition, and identify a beachhead (first) target market

All accepted teams will be required to complete a contract in order to participate and receive the stipend.

New UPD and Staff for Sociology Undergraduate Program!

Hello Sociology Majors & Minors!

I have been the Undergraduate Program Director (UPD) of sociology for the past 10 years. However, it is time for me to transition off of this role and the new UPD will be Dr. Brian Soller. My term ends this semester (May) and Dr. Soller starts in the fall (August). I'll still be at UMBC and I am excited to have more time to teach more undergraduate courses in the future.

Dr. Soller and I are less available than usual over the summer because faculty are only on 9 month contracts, so the best option for summer is to contact our new Academic Program Specialist in our front office, Sarah Glorioso (sarahg6@umbc.edu). Ms. Glorioso is wonderful and can connect you to us or other faculty if you have any questions or needs. :)

Wishing you a successful end of the spring semester, a lovely summer, and best of luck from me as you finish up your majors and minors in sociology. We're thankful to have you as part of the sociology crew here at UMBC!

Study Tip of the Week: How Do I Check my Grades???

<Tagline>We've got a spreadsheet for you!</Tagline>

Welcome to our Weekly Study Tip post! This week, we're talking all about checking grades. Some of you may be avoiding thinking about it, but by checking in with yourself for every course, you should find that anxiety decreases and you feel more confident going into the last push of the semester.

We've put together a YouTube video with how to use our accompanying spreadsheet! Please note that if you click the hyperlink for the spreadsheet, it will trigger an automatic download. This spreadsheet requires your browser to have the use of Microsoft Excel.

1. Check your Syllabi

Your professors will have outlined the grade breakdown for each class in their syllabus. Make sure to reference this and write down everything you'll be graded on so that you can fill out the spreadsheet accurately!

2. Fill in the Spreadsheet's Categories

Take these percentages and edit the spreadsheet accordingly for each class - just make sure you are careful to accurately use the percentage symbol!

3. Enter your Current Grades

You can enter a different grade for each assignment/test/discussion meeting on each line, or if Blackboard gives you an average, you can just enter the average one time.

Note: fill in the spreadsheet as a fraction (i.e. 3/5) or a decimal (i.e. .89 for 89%), otherwise your grade will be incredibly skewed. If you received 100% on something, you can just put 1.

4. Enter Hypotheticals if you Want

It's likely that there will be some categories left blank. If you want to know what your final grade will be if you get different grades on the final exam (or any final upcoming tests/quizzes/assignments, etc.), you can enter hypothetical grades for those columns or assignments to see how much the final grade will change!

Note: you will not have an accurate final grade until all columns are filled out. Your 'percentage of total possible points' is your current grade in the class!

If you have questions, ask your professor!
