Below is Information on the team tryouts, coming to you May 3rd & 4th!

Overview:
As a team, the CyberDawgs participate in numerous collegiate cyber competitions where we have achieved national recognition, including DOE CyberForce in Illinois, ISTS in New York, and MACCDC right here at home in Maryland. 

While we have a history of success and high achievement, we're not just looking for folks who are already cybersecurity gurus. You do need to have a solid defensive cyber foundation, but our highest emphases are on communication, group cohesion, and being able to continue doing this for fun.

  • ENG 231 (probably)
  • Friday, May 3rd, 12:00 - 15:00
  • Saturday, May 4th, 12:00 - 15:00
You only need to select 1 of these dates/times above to tryout.

Preparing for Tryouts
At the tryouts, you'll be assessed on your defensive cyber capabilities and knowledge as well as your documentation, interpersonal, and communication skills. The tryout packet, available only at the tryouts, will provide more information. 

To prepare, focus on learning and reviewing: 
  • what constitutes a cyber security vulnerability
  • how to secure an operating system (i.e. a 'box') that is vulnerable
  • how to manually find indicators of compromise, after an assumed breach
You do not need to know a suite of tools for tryouts. You will not be given tools, aside from Nmap.

Tryout FAQs
What OS do I need to know? 
  • You'll be asked in the application which type of OS you're most comfortable with and you'll be assigned a similar box to that for tryouts. So, if you indicate you're most familiar with Windows, you'll get a Windows server at tryouts. Linux people get a Linux server. You will only have to manage 1 machine.
Will there be a technical interview? No
Will I be asked coding questions? No
Will I need to know offensive security? No
Will I need to bring my own laptop? YES
Will I be able to keep the tryout packet? No

  2. TryHackMe | Cyber Security Training, Path- Blue Team: https://tryhackme.com/path/outline/blueteam [Defensive Security has a lot of different areas and this will give you a broad knowledge base. Focus on Sections 1, 3, 5 & 6
Below is some important information to consider for tryouts:
  1. Recall that you will be assigned a virtual machine for tryouts. Which one you get is determined by your answer to the question "With which operating system are you most experienced?" When considering your answer to that question, consider that it is asking about experience in system administration, digital forensics, incident response, and general usage. This is a cybersecurity team tryouts. Keep that in mind.
  2. The virtual machine you will be assigned for tryouts doesn't use your local resources. Therefore, the specs of your personal laptop hardly matter. Bring and use whatever laptop with which you feel most comfortable
  3. The only requirement of the laptop you bring to tryouts is that is has RDP (only if you choose Windows), SSH (only if you choose Linux), and a WIFI adapter, because you need to be able to get on the tryout network via WIFI.
  4. It would probably help you to have Discord installed, though

Final Thoughts

This integration enhances your commuting experience with its seamless and convenient features, allowing you to access real-time transit information and plan your journey quickly and efficiently.

Getting started is a breeze:

  1. Download and Open the Transit App: Head over to your app store, download the Transit App, and open it on your device. (Open this link on your mobile device for instant access
  2. Navigate to the Menu: Once in the app, click the menu icon at the top left corner.
  3. Access Transit Options: The menu has three tabs at the top. Select the middle one, which features two bars and two circles.
  4. Setting up UMBC Transit on the app is simple. Scroll down until you see 'My Transit Mode' and tap the 'V' icon next to 'Bus.' Then, scroll down again and select 'UMBC Transit' from the list.
  5. Select Your Route: Now, you're all set! Select your desired route, and you'll have access to real-time transit information, including arrival times and schedules.

Applications are open for the Women's Center at UMBC's internship opportunities!

The Women's Center offers for-credit internships for the fall semester with the potential to be considered for a paid position for the following spring semester. People on our student staff team work with us in a supportive and collaborative environment, advancing gender equity at UMBC and achieving their own personal/professional goals. 

Internship Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate student at UMBC enrolled for Fall 2024 and intending to enroll for Spring 2025
  • Academic good standing (cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above; a lower GPA does not disqualify applicants but will require a conversation regarding academic support)
  • Commitment to the Women's Center mission to advance gender equity from an intersectional feminist perspective at UMBC
To be considered for a 2024-25 internship and/or staff position, please fill out this online application. When you have completed this form, you will be directed to use this Box file submission link to submit the following:
  1. Cover letter explaining why you would like to be considered for this position
  1. A recent copy of your resume
  1. One writing sample* (<4 pages double-spaced)
Applications that are missing any of these items will not be considered. 
We will only consider applicants when we have received all 4 items (the completed Google Form, cover letter, resume, and a writing sample) associated with applying for this position. Interviews will be offered on a rolling basis. Please note that completion for an application does NOT guarantee an interview will be scheduled.

The physics department is hosting a talk tomorrow, April 24th at 11 AM which may be of interest to SPIE students. Anyone is welcome to attend. Our colloquia are meant to reach a broad audience. The talk will be in PHYS 401. There will also be time to meet with Willeke at 3 PM tomorrow in PHYS 221.

Title: Detecting bio-signatures of the Earth, as if it was an Exoplanet: Building a snapshot full-stokes spectropolarimeter to search for life on Earth

Are we alone? The search for life outside Earth is a driving force for (exo)planetary research. Numerical simulations confirm the possibility of being able to distinguish between different surface types as well as molecules in atmospheres, by looking at the reflected flux from their host stars. Linear spectropolarimetry proves to be an even more effective tool to identify structures of different surfaces. In  addition to this, homochirality is the one unambiguous bio-signature of life on Earth that can be identified by measuring the fraction of reflected circular polarized light. To  detect extraterrestrial life, either on solar-system planets and/or moons or on exoplanets, we need highly dedicated instruments as well as data analysis algorithms. Spectropolarimeters help us to understand the sensitivity that is required to identify bio-signatures. In this colloquim, I will introduce you to the search of bio-signatures  on our own Earth, as a testbed to search for life elsewhere. I will go through the measurement  concepts of existing spectropolarimeters, present results from our succesfull field campaign in Switzerland, and end of with a concept space-based instrument designed to measure polarization signals, in the visible spectrum, from the Earth as if it were an exoplanet.
