Abstract: Asian student migrations reveal most clearly the stark contradictions between the restrictive and selective priorities of immigration regulation. Over the past two centuries of intensification both of globalization and nation-state regulation of migration, the continued privileging of Asian student mobilities, employment, and settlements underscore that this category of migrants is multilaterally regarded as beneficial and meriting legal protections and support. Education and its pursuit produce persons with enhanced capacities for cross-cultural exchanges and negotiations and certified enhanced skills and expertise, whose circulations bolster international relationships and spread influence among societies partnered through student exchanges. For these reasons, Asian educational migrants constitute revealing exceptions to the late nineteenth-century hardening of border security regimes around the world which prioritized racial difference and national origins for exclusion and greater restriction, particularly targeting Asian persons. Abundant scholarship has explored the international emergence of ideologies and institutions for immigration restriction constructed with the goals of segregating Asians. Equally foundational, however, has been the parallel and ongoing recruitment of Asian students as agents who may foster international influence but also for their eventual employment and resettlement as valued knowledge workers. Status as educational migrants contravened the racialization of Asians as inassimilable, inferior others. Asian student migrations thus underscore the necessity of exploring migration and migration regulation along a fuller spectrum, not just of restriction of racialized undesirables, but also of recruitment of valued knowledge migrants who enjoy encouragement and legal protections and access to legal migration.

Using ChatGPT for the Job Search

<Tagline>Learn how this tool can help you land your dream role</Tagline>

Let’s face it — the job market can be an exhausting and overwhelming terrain to navigate. Whether you’re searching for your first job or internship, making a pivot into a different role, or finally going for the career of your dreams, getting your materials together can be a time-intensive task.

Enter ChatGPT and the power of AI. As with any tool or technology, ChatGPT can be used to help move things along in your job search. By knowing just a few simple strategies to ask the right prompts, you can find yourself ready to take on the job market in no time.

One general rule is to use the RTF format, meaning Role, Task, Format. You need to define the AI’s role, outline the task, and specify the format in which you want to receive the information. Here are three ways to put RTF into action.

Conduct job market research with ChatGPT. If you’re new to your industry of choice, it might be helpful to gain information on job roles with the help of ChatGPT.

PROMPT: “You are an expert in software engineering. Please list the top five challenges and top five responsibilities tied to the software engineer role.”

Take advantage of ChatGPT’s memory. If you are looking for ChatGPT’s help on long documents, you can save space on your prompt by using curly brackets. You’ll then include the bracketed information immediately after your prompt.

PROMPT: “You are a hiring manager. I want to apply for {job description} using {resume}. List the top three accomplishments I should highlight in my cover letter.
{job description} = PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION
{resume} = PASTE RESUME”

Ask ChatGPT to act as your career coach. By engaging in role-playing methods while asking for a specific tone, you’re setting the scope of the AI model’s responses. This then can give you a more realistic response based on your prompt.

PROMPT: “You are my career coach and I would like you to help me understand my strengths, weaknesses, and goals by asking me a series of 10 questions. Be encouraging in your tone.”

Looking to learn more about AI and its impact on career exploration and job search? Join us for the Keys to Success presentation on April 22nd at 12 PM at Commons 331.

This workshop focuses on Distress Tolerance skills. Students will have the opportunity to learn specific skills to identify when they need to keep moving through distressing situations and how to manage the distress when they do.
