UMBC has a strong tradition of very active participation in state and national elections. This year, Marylanders will elect a new Senator as well as new state and federal legislators, and will participate in electing the President and Vice President of the United States. The Maryland primary election will take place on May 14, 2024. Between now and then, if you are registered to vote in Maryland, you can cast your vote on the UMBC campus by requesting a mail ballot and depositing the completed ballot in the drop-off box located in the lobby of The Commons.

Register to vote: If you are an eligible Maryland resident, you can use the state's online portal to register. Maryland's deadline to register to vote in advance of the 2024 primary election is April 23. Whether you live in Maryland or not, UMBC's voter registration portal can help you take the first steps to register and vote in your home state if you are eligible to do so.

Request a mail ballot, then vote in The Commons: Registered Maryland voters can complete an online request for a mail-in ballot here. Once you have received and completed your ballot, you can submit it by placing it in the official Board of Elections drop-off box in the lobby of The Commons (near the Campus Information Center desk). No postage is necessary. The Board of Elections will pick up ballots placed in the box multiple times each week.

Make a pledge to vote: Every election year, ALL IN to Vote hosts a Pledge to Vote leaderboard for university students across the country. UMBC placed #4 in the nation on the leaderboard in 2022. Students who plan to vote: Please take the pledge, and spread the word.

Access Maryland and out-of-state voter resources: Find the latest information, including dates for early voting and deadlines to request mailed and electronic ballots, using the ALL IN to Vote portal hosted on the UMBC Center for Democracy and Civic Life website.

Serve as election judge: The Baltimore County Board of Elections is recruiting election judges to work at polling stations during the 2024 primary election. These are paid positions and an important public service.

Participate in civic and community engagement programs: Whether you are eligible to register to vote or not, you have a stake in your communities and can play an important role in shaping them. Follow the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's myUMBC page so you will receive alerts about upcoming opportunities for learning and conversation.

Never heard of URCAD? It stands for Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day. It's a day for sharing what we all do on campus! There are hundreds of research posters, oral presentations, dance performances, films, interactive games, and much more, all presented by YOU, undergraduates at UMBC! This event brings together students in both research and artistic fields from all disciplines to showcase the amazing projects you've all been working on. Bring your friends! Family! Mentors! Come and be inspired!

Eligibility: Graduate students who have advanced to candidacy for a Ph.D. or completed a M.S., Ph.D. or J.D. by the spring semester 2024. For graduates, degrees must have been awarded May 1, 2022, or later.

Overview: This unique opportunity will place fellows in coastal sustainability, coastal management, and environmental policy positions within Maryland through partnerships with state agencies and University of Maryland leadership. Fellows will work closely with state agency and legislative leadership to provide science expertise to develop policy relevant to Maryland’s progressive program to address state challenges in sustainability and action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. It is an exciting opportunity for students interested in applying their research experience and critical thinking skills to advancing science-based, environmental decision-making and policy development in Maryland.

Funding: Fellows will be full-time, contractual employees of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science-MDSG receiving a base annualized salary of $56,000 plus access to fringe benefits including health insurance, a retirement subsidy, and generous leave. Join us for the 2024 Arbutus Arts Festival on Sunday, May 19! The festival takes place on East Drive and Linden Avenue in downtown Arbutus and will include more than 200 crafters selling a variety of creations, along with food, music, and a Children's Corner. The Festival will happen rain or shine and runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This Arts Festival is a wonderful opportunity to get to know our neighboring community of Arbutus. It also provides an opportunity to give back by volunteering. The Arts Festival is seeking volunteers to help at the Children's Corner, an area just for kids and their families that will include an electric train, face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides, carnival games, and more. 

If you would like to volunteer at the Children's Corner, please complete this form. The Arts Festival can provide service learning or community service documentation if needed.
