IRC Baltimore: Now Hiring Summer 2024 Interns

<Tagline>Applications open until 12 April</Tagline>

The IRC in Baltimore is now recruiting summer 2024 interns for roles ranging from legal services and career and financing coaching, to housing, cultural orientation, and health and social integration. Apply online at www.rescue.org/careers before Friday, April 12!

About the IRC

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) was founded at the behest of Albert Einstein in 1933 to assist people fleeing from persecution. Since then, the IRC has grown and works all over the world providing humanitarian support. In Baltimore, the IRC works with refugees from the moment they step off the plane to help them get situated and become self-sufficient members of their new community.

Internship Opportunities

We offer 9 unique internships that offer a wide variety of opportunities to develop different skills and gain experience including:

·Career and Financial Coaching Intern: Career and financial coaching interns will assist IRC employment specialists with daily activities that contribute to the self-sufficiency of clients. This may include working individually with clients to conduct job searches and prepare for interviews, leading small group job readiness training sessions, conducting research on potential employers and assisting with service documentation. Interns may also have the opportunity to develop an employment-specific project.

·Cultural Orientation Intern: The cultural orientation intern will assist the cultural orientation coordinator in designing, developing, and delivering structured training sessions on topics such as financial management, U.S. laws, housing, transportation, safety, healthcare, and cultural adjustment in order to aid refugees on their journey towards self-sufficiency.

·Health and Social Integration Intern: The health and social integration intern assists IRC’s intensive case management (ICM) program. The intern will work with the ICM team to connect at-risk clients to the healthcare, education, resources, and psychosocial resources that support their individual goals.

·Housing Intern: This intern will support the logistics specialist in planning and delivering essential housing program activities. This includes shopping for supplies, setting up new apartments, meeting with partners and volunteers, and conducting home visits and orientations with new clients.

·Immigration Legal Services Intern: The IRC is recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice to provide immigration legal services. Some of our services include filing applications for adjustment of status (i.e. green cards), naturalization, and family reunification for refugees, asylees and immigrants. Interns will experience a first-hand look at the basics of immigration processes and procedures.

·Intake Intern: The intake team is the first point of contact for new “walk-in” asylees, parolees, secondary migrants and all other returning IRC clients. The team conducts eligibility assessments to determine client needs and refer to relevant IRC programs. Interns will meet directly with individual clients and families to support intake assessments.

·Resettlement Intern: Resettlement interns will assist IRC’s resettlement team with daily activities that help to welcome and contribute to the self-sufficiency of refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The resettlement team is the first point of contact for newly arrived refugees and offers support, guidance and ongoing orientation through up to five years after arrival. Interns will work directly with individual clients and families to assist with providing resettlement services.

·Walk-In Services Intern: Walk-in services interns will assist IRC’s walk-in team with daily activities that help to welcome and contribute to the self-sufficiency of refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The walk-in team is the first point of contact for newly arrived immigrants and offers support, guidance and ongoing orientation through up to five years after arrival. Interns will work directly with individual clients and families to assist with providing walk-in services.

·Youth Intern: The youth program supports incoming refugee students and families to succeed in U.S. schools through providing orientations to the U.S. school system, facilitating parent engagement in their children’s education, and supporting public schools to serve refugee students. The youth intern will work closely with the youth services team to provide direct services to refugee families.

Student Profile: Sofia Brouse

<Tagline>Meet Sofia: MCS student, makeup artist, drag performer....</Tagline>

By: Sydney Ashton

Meet Sofia Brouse, a Senior MCS Major, Gender Women’s + Sexuality Studies Minor, and a self taught makeup artist and drag performer! Sofia grew up in Catonsville only a few minutes down the road from UMBC. The senior started her college career off at Towson University but transferred due to the pandemic and its challenges. She earned an associates degree in general studies from CCBC Catonsville and transferred into UMBC her Junior year. When she isn’t in school mode, Sofia spends a lot of her free time perfecting makeup looks, posting creative transitional videos on Tik Tok, or performing at the occasional drag shows in the Baltimore area.

Q: When did you start doing makeup and drag?

“I began doing makeup about 6 years ago, but it didn’t start with drag makeup. After doing makeup for a year or two, I found drag makeup and performance and have been doing that for about 3-4 years. Since I was so young when I started drag, I didn’t start performing for about a year after I started practicing drag makeup because there are very few shows who will allow someone to perform if they are not 21+. At first, I didn’t think that I could do drag since I’m a woman, but I was very lucky to find an incredibly supportive community of performers who welcomed me into the world of drag and taught me that anyone can do drag as long as they love it and bring kindness to the community!”

Q: Can you talk about your journey as a makeup artist? What inspired/continues to inspire you?

“I first started doing makeup when I was around 16 and would mostly recreate makeup that I found on YouTube. Although I started with mostly basic glam faces, I learned most of my technical makeup skills from learning how to do drag makeup rather than everyday makeup. I take most of my inspiration from the 80’s dark fantasy, glam rock, and synthpop aesthetics, along with many other very talented artists and performers on social media. I also take a great deal of inspiration from books, more specifically high fantasy and fantasy romance novels.”

Q: Can you talk a bit about which social media platforms you use and how your background in MCS helps you curate content and manage your platforms?

“I mostly use Instagram and TikTok for makeup content, as the beauty community tends to be the most active on these platforms. When I have more time to create content after college however, I plan on creating a YouTube channel to create more long-form makeup and performance content. MCS has taught me a great deal about how to manage my social media accounts. On one hand, being in MCS has taught me the theory and logic behind media messages, which has made it much easier to navigate today’s social media landscape. On the other, I have learned technical applications of media theory like how to create a social media marketing plan and strategically create content, which I can apply to all of my social media platforms after college.”

Q: What specific skills/ knowledge have transferred over from class to your social media and work in makeup and drag? Which skills have you learned in the MCS department at UMBC that have been the most helpful with your work and social media platforms?

“One thing that has really helped me in my social media work has been the idea of creating a consistent personal brand. Before learning how to do this at UMBC, my platforms were not very consistent and were not organized well. Now, although they are far from perfect, my social media platforms are much more consistent and aesthetically pleasing using the design concepts taught in MCS. “

Q: What advice would you give those who want to start creating content on social media?

“My biggest piece of advice for someone wanting to create content on social media is to be yourself as much as you can. If someone thinks what you are doing is cringy or weird, you are probably on the right track. The only way creating content on social media works is if you commit to it 100%, which often means doing things that are not comfortable at first. For example, it took me a very long time to be comfortable filming in public. But, after doing it over and over, I learned that filming in public only works if you commit to it. Once you stop listening to people who judge others for creating art, being perceived as cringey or weird becomes less of a problem.”

Q: Plans post grad?/ dream job?

“After graduation, I plan to attend a specialized makeup school to become certified in makeup artistry. I would like to use my MCS degree to build a career in the makeup and fashion industry, using both my makeup and college education for social media management as a makeup artist in the industry.”

More of Sofia’s work can be viewed on her Tik Tok and Instagram @theladylitebrite and you can also book her for prom, special events, weddings, photoshoots, and costume makeup! DM her on instagram or email her at theladylitebrite@gmail.com

Student Profile: Anasia Mickle

<Tagline>A Lightbulb Moment</Tagline>

by Dan Glennon

Meet Anasia Mickle! She is a junior (senior at the end of this semester) and a transfer student into the MCS department! After finding inspiration from a movie, Anasia knew that this was the right department for her!

So tell us about yourself! Where are you from? How would you describe yourself? What year are you? Interests? Hobbies? Do any of them directly connect to MCS?

My name is Anasia and I am a Maryland native! I love to sing, dance, and read. I am a transfer student who is going to graduate next year. If I could describe myself I'd probably just say I'm sincere. I believe in always being honest, and everything that I do comes from a good place.

Did you have a "lightbulb moment" when you realized MCS was for you?

I graduated from Howard Community College last December and I wasn't really sure what I wanted to major in when I looked at 4-year schools. I was looking online at the majors that UMBC offers and I noticed that UMBC was very humanities-based, and I did so well in my humanities classes at HCC that I just knew that this was a major to consider! I then looked around to see what I could do with an MCS degree and Marketing came up multiple times. I kept this in the back of my head and applied to UMBC. During this time I watched Emily In Paris where she has her Masters in Marketing and I just loved what she did. That was when I decided that MCS was the major that I wanted to pursue.

Is there a particular piece of media (a certain film, show, etc) that you look at differently after being in the MCS program? Are there any types of media you look at differently as a whole?

I think that I personally look at all media differently. When big corporations post, I am now thinking about what in that post made it reach me. Why is this TikTok doing so well? How could I get my TikTok to do well?

Do you know what job you'd like to start your career with? What aspirations do you have? Dream big and don't confine yourself to "where do you see yourself in five years?"

I currently work at Howard Community College as an Apprenticeship Advisor and Outreach Specialist so my career has technically started but, if I could pick a job that I would use my MCS degree for it would be being a Lead Social Media marketer for a small company that's social media is lacking.

How are you managing this semester so far?

I think that I am managing this semester pretty well! This is only my second full semester here (I took a couple of summer classes) and I think that I really have a groove now when it comes to my classes.

Do you have any advice for incoming MCS students?

My advice would be, that if you are considering, just go for it! This major can open so many doors for you because it is so versatile! People are always looking for people who can either market them or communicate well which is needed in many different professions.

If you had to convince someone to join the MCS department in three sentences or less, what would you say?

If I had to convince someone to join the MCS department I would say that if you're all about making videos and telling awesome stories, a media and communications major is your jam. It could lead to a job where you get paid for doing stuff you love.

Are you currently engaging with media beyond being a consumer while you are still in school?

While pursuing this major, I took it upon myself to use the skills that I've learned and I am now helping a company called WCAuto with their social media marketing.

Do you have an internship or have one lined up?

I am currently a social media marketing intern for a company called Super Purposes!
