Hello UMBC Pre-Medical Society Members!

First and foremost, we want to extend a warm welcome to all our new members who dropped by our involvement fest table.

On Tuesday, February the 13th we are hosting the United States Army for an Army Suture Clinic. This is an in-person event and will take place in ILSB201 from 11:30 - 1:30. This is a great opportunity to connect with representatives from the US Army in regards to their Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) for prospective military physicians, as well as hone your suturing skills! However, please be aware that due to limited availability, we will be utilizing a Google Form to coordinate sign-ups for this clinic. Follow the link below in order to reserve your spot.

Welcome back! I hope everyone is having a good semester. A lot of exciting things are in store for Global Brigades—especially our Telebrigade this Spring break! Here are some updates for you all:

1. There has been a vacancy in our e-board. We are now looking for a new treasurer! A treasurer is in charge of managing funds in our student account for events. The UMBC Police Department will be assessed by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) February 12 through February 14, 2024. An assessor will examine all aspects of our policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services to verify our compliance with professional standards.
 
The assessment is part of the voluntary process required to achieve accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. UMBC Police achieved initial accreditation in 2016 and reaccreditation in 2020.
  
As part of the assessment, and on an ongoing basis, university employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments related to the department's compliance with professional standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status.
 
Public comment can be given via the CALEA portal on the UMBC Police website or submitted directly. 
 
An overview of the CALEA process, including the titles of standards, is accessible for your review. Please direct questions related to the accreditation to the accreditation manager at sm@umbc.edu.

Maya Buenaventura is a policy researcher and attorney at RAND. She studies how laws, policies, and programs impact people’s lives and wellbeing. Her areas of interest include the justice system and homelessness. Dr. Buenaventura received her J.D. from Northwestern University and her Ph.D. in Public Policy from the Pardee RAND Graduate School. 

  

George Zuo (pronounced "zō") is an associate economist at RAND and a professor of policy analysis at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. As an applied microeconomist, his research focuses on using data and causal methods to study policies bridging economic, education, and health disparities in the United States. Dr. Zuo received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Maryland in 2021.

Hey CURL PWR! We missed you all over the break! We hope you all enjoyed your holiday and that you’re ready to have a fantastic Spring Semester! We have so many great things planned for y’all and the first thing we want to share is OUR COMMITTEE INTEREST FORM is live again! Curl PWR is proud to be doing committees this semester, consisting of a group with our Eboard members: treasurer, public relations, event coordinator, and GBM coordinator. We are also happy to announce that we will have a MALE FOCUS GROUP option! Each committee group will get the opportunity to be more involved with the inner workings of Curl PWR. If you want to be a part of the club but do not have the time to committ to a full position on the Executive board, join a committee. You will get hands-on experience with how an Executive board works and you will be able to add this to your resume. Additionally, you will help with coming up with ideas for GBMs, events, and hanging out with the group. Committee members will meet two times a month. Committee members will be expected to collaborate and contribute to meetings, attend committee meetings, come to GBMs and effectively communicate.
