Leadership Announcement

Dear UMBC Community,

It is my great pleasure to share the wonderful news that Manfred H. M. van Dulmen has accepted our invitation to join UMBC as provost and senior vice president. Manfred, who will begin in the role in July, currently serves as senior associate provost and dean of the Graduate College at Kent State University in Ohio, where he has spent the bulk of his career. I could not be more thrilled about this appointment, and I am deeply grateful to the members of the search committee and all who participated in this critically important search.

A faculty member in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kent State since 2004 and a full professor since 2015, Manfred has excelled in academic leadership at all levels, including as interim department chair, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, dean of the Graduate College, and associate provost for academic affairs and senior associate provost in the Office of the Provost. In these roles, he has led strategic planning in academic affairs; led the university through the COVID-19 pandemic; and developed strategies for enhancing graduate education and for supporting student mental health at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is deeply committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, centering these principles in all his work.

Like UMBC, Kent State is a public Research 1 institution that values the combination of student success and research excellence. Manfred’s own record as a faculty member and an administrator demonstrates his understanding of faculty excellence as the integration of teaching, research, and service.

In coming to know UMBC, he cited such integration–that teaching, research, and service go hand-in-hand here–as a standout quality. And he said UMBC’s long-demonstrated interest in innovating and setting the course for where higher education needs to go spoke to him and contributed greatly to his enthusiasm for joining UMBC. He is particularly excited about working with the UMBC community to articulate and advance our strategic priorities for the future.

As a first-generation college student and a first-generation immigrant to the U.S. who attended graduate school in America, Manfred is passionate about the transformative power of higher education and about its public mission in service of students and society broadly.

From the first time I met him, his commitment to students, his care for people with whom he worked, his humility, and his drive for mission-driven excellence were clear, as was his desire to be at UMBC. The alignment of UMBC’s values with his own, along with the opportunity to help set the course for UMBC’s future, made this role–in this community, at this moment–uniquely appealing to him.

“It is a tremendous opportunity and privilege to be chosen to serve in this role, to build on the incredible history and legacy of the institution to further its excellence and its role as a national leader in higher education,” he said.

At Kent State, Manfred has helped to enhance and promote research strength across all disciplines. His own research is interdisciplinary in nature–his research interests include adolescent and young adult relationships and experiences, externalizing behavior problems and aggression, and measurement and methodology–and he has led efforts resulting in new collaborative degree programs in data science and cybersecurity, as well as in innovative micro-credential programs at Kent State.

An award-winning scholar, he has received more than $6.5 million in research funding, published more than 100 articles and book chapters, and edited or co-edited three books. Manfred founded and served as editor-in-chief of the Sage Publications Journal Emerging Adulthood. Before joining Kent State as an assistant professor in 2004, Manfred was a research associate at the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Ph.D. in family social science. He holds a doctorandus (the equivalent of a master’s degree in the U.S.) in clinical child and adolescent psychology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

My sincere gratitude to the search committee, led by music Professor Linda Dusman, for its dedication and outstanding work that has led us to this terrific result. Please join me in thanking them and in extending a warm UMBC welcome to Manfred!

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby

Catalyst deactivation and slow computational research methods are recognized barriers for rapidly moving catalyst-driven bioenergy technologies from discovery to scale-up. But researchers are closer to mitigating both challenges thanks to two university-led projects in partnership with the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium (ChemCatBio).

The University of New Mexico and University of Maryland, Baltimore County were awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office and the Minority Serving Institution STEM Research & Development Consortium as part of a funding call for ChemCatBio. The funding partnership aims to reduce barriers of entry for minority serving institutions and increase bioenergy research collaboration.

According to ChemCatBio Director Josh Schaidle, the projects are part of a consortium strategy to synchronize catalyst innovation and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

"We are excited to partner with both universities and tap the unique expertise they bring to addressing catalyst deactivation and speeding catalyst discovery," he said. "These diverse institutions, people, and perspectives are essential to realizing the vision of ChemCatBio, which is the rapid decarbonization of our economy."

ChemCatBio researchers are developing methods for upgrading biomass into a feedstock of mixed olefins, which can be upgraded into energy-dense sustainable aviation fuel using zeolite catalysts. However, questions remain on how the molecular shape of the catalyst - especially the porosity of the catalyst - affects the efficiency of those reactions.

In the past, quantum chemistry has been used to study such chemical reactions, but those methods are slow and expensive when scaled up to large systems. To speed up the rate of discovery, a team from the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering at University of Maryland, Baltimore County are using machine learning to learn how the interactions work at the quantum chemistry scale.

"With our new methods, we aim to study larger systems and more realistic conditions," explained Tyler Josephson, the principal investigator, who was recently awarded a NSF career award. "If we can predict in the computer that this zeolite architecture works better than that zeolite architecture, that's useful information for experimentalists."

Josephson said that the project complements broader research work in the ATOMS Lab to bring machine learning and automated reasoning into chemical engineering.

UMBC Named Top 50 Green College by Princeton Review

UMBC was named by the Princeton Review as one of the Top 50 Green Colleges! We're proud of the hard work being done across campus to make UMBC green! Thank you to all of our campus partners for the effort they put in, this is truly a collaborative success! See excerpts below from their press release detailing the announcement.

The Princeton Review released its 13th annual Guide to Green Colleges —a resource the company has published online since 2010 for college applicants seeking schools with strong commitments to the environment in their campus policies, programs, and practices.

Accessible for free at www.princetonreview.com/green-guide, the Guide to Green Colleges, 2023 Edition profiles 455 colleges and presents a ranking list of the Top 50 Green Colleges.

The Princeton Review chose the schools for the guide and its ranking list based on data from the company’s surveys of administrators at 713 colleges during the 2021–22 academic year and surveys of students attending the colleges. More than 25 data points were analyzed in the selection of schools for the guide and ranking list. Details follow on how the schools were chosen and the ranking list was tallied.

"Since we debuted this project 13 years ago, we have seen an increasing interest among college applicants in attending colleges that are committed to the environment and to green practices” said Rob Franek, Editor in Chief of The Princeton Review. He noted that of the 10,400 college applicants participating in The Princeton Review’s 2022 College Hopes & Worries Survey, an overwhelming majority—77%—said information about a college's commitment to the environment would affect their decision to apply to or attend the school. Of that cohort, 37% said such information would contribute “strongly” or “very much” to their decision about a school.

“Over the years, we have also seen a significant growth in the number of colleges pivoting to sustainability-related policies and programs,” Franek added. “We are proud to shine a light on these schools and to continue serving as a unique resource for students who want their ‘best-fit’ college to also ideally be a green one. We highly recommend each and every one of the colleges in our guide.”

How Schools Were Chosen for the Guide

The Princeton Review chose the 455 colleges based on its 2021–22 survey of administrators at 713 colleges concerning their institutions' sustainability-related policies, practices, and programs. The company’s editors analyzed more than 25 data points from the survey to tally Green Rating scores for the schools on a scale of 60 to 99. Colleges that earned a Green Rating score of 80 or higher were chosen for the Guide to Green Colleges. Of the 455 schools selected for the 2023 edition of the guide, 421 are in the U.S., 26 are in Canada, two are in Taiwan and one (each) is in Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, Ireland, Mexico, and Morocco.

Thirty-one of the 455 schools in the guide earned a Green Rating score of 99 (the highest possible score). They are listed in The Princeton Review's Green Honor Roll (reported August 2022). The Princeton Review’s Green Rating scores of colleges appear in the profiles of the schools on PrincetonReview.com and in profiles in the company’s flagship college guide, The Best 388 Colleges: 2023 Edition (August 2022).

How the Guide's Top 50 Green Colleges Ranking List Was Tallied

The Princeton Review tallied the top 50 ranking list based on data from its surveys of administrators at the colleges as well as its surveys of students attending the colleges. The methodology factored in ten data points from the administrator survey and three data points from the student survey. Data from the student survey included student assessments of the influence of sustainability issues on their academic and campus experiences; administrator and student support for environmental awareness and conservation efforts; and the visibility and impact of student environmental groups on the campus. Note: The 455 schools in the guide overall are not ranked from 1 to 455, hierarchically. They are listed alphabetically.
