Upcoming PeopleSoft System Downtime
In order to facilitate a mandatory PeopleSoft Campus Solutions upgrade, it will be necessary to take down the Campus Solutions, HR and Finance systems. The systems will be down from Friday, December 8th, 2023 5:00 pm through Sunday, December 10th, 2023 5:00 pm. During that time, you will be unable to retrieve information or perform transactions in the system. We will make every effort to limit down time, and we will inform the Campus should the upgrade activities conclude earlier than anticipated. Other functions and applications in myUMBC will not be affected.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Participants will leave with a blank calendar to plan for studying as well as class-by-class breakdown templates so you can keep track of everything. We'll see ya there - TODAY, Wednesday December 6 from 12-1 PM in UC112!

Sebastian Deffner attends selective quantum science conference in Vatican City
Sebastian Deffner, associate professor of physics, attended “Quantum Science and Technology: Recent Advances and New Perspectives,” a workshop hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Vatican City from November 30 to December 2. Deffner was among only about 70 global experts invited to the workshop, and the guest list included numerous Nobel laureates.
“The leading experts in quantum science met in a unique place for a unique workshop to discuss the past, present, and future of quantum technologies,” Deffner says of the workshop.
For Deffner, it was an exciting and rare opportunity. The invitation recognizes his leadership role in developing the young field of quantum thermodynamics on an international scale. In 2019, he co-authored the first textbook focused on the subject, and his research group consistently contributes to the research literature.
Recordings of talks from the workshop are available here.

Pizza Grab & Go! - FRIDAY Dec. 8th
Second-Year Send Off! Celebrate the end of the fall semester
To celebrate the end of your fall semester, join us for a grab & go pizza party on December 8th from 12-1pm in Sherman Hall 345 (B wing).
RSVP here! First come, first served!
Renique Kersh, Ph.D., became UMBC's vice president for student affairs in August 2023, and her first days were a whirlwind that included dropping her sons at school, moving from Boston to Maryland, and attending a number of UMBC welcome events for students and the community.
Now that shes had the chance to replant her roots at UMBC (her first job out of graduate school was as a community director for Residential Life from 2001 - 2003), Dr. Kersh is using her time to listen to the community and bring her expertise to the table as she works with campus leadership and partners to support student success and well-being.
Her excitement and eagerness to be here is evident in the way she enthusiastically talks about UMBC students, staff, faculty, alumni, and families--and the work ahead.
Read the interview with Dr. Kersh on the UMBC Magazine website.

Master BR Available for Occupancy for 1-2 People
Hi! We're looking for 1-2 roommates to live in the master bedroom in a 3 bedroom luxury 1464 sq. ft. apartment called Avalon Arundel Crossing. It is 12 minutes away from campus. The master bedroom is a 12x12, has a walk-in closet, and a private bathroom. The apartment contains a very spacious, furnished living room with a dining room that has been converted into a study area. The kitchen has ample cabinet and drawer space (microwave, oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher included). Comes with washer/dryer. There's free parking, secure Amazon hub lockers for packages, and bike storage. The complex has a pool, a game-room, a cookout area, a fireplace, a computer room (includes printer), and a leisure space to chill with friends, host events, etc. Our community is also pet friendly and has dog parks. All the buildings have secure, controlled access. It is located in a safe neighborhood in Anne Arundel County with multiple restaurants within walking distance and even more at Glen Burnie's shopping center just 9 minutes away. We own a 2 year old medium sized, well-mannered dog that keeps to himself. You would be living with the two of us (woman and man) who each have our own rooms and a bathroom. If interested, please email us at nberhe1@umbc.edu and tomak1@umbc.edu or text at 571-422-9084.
