Breia Lassiter, 2018 English Alumna, now working as an Associate Attorney for Dinsmore & Shohl. In her work as a law student clinician, Ms. Lassiter successfully advocated for the rights of an incarcerated man who was not receiving his religious meal accommodations from the prison. For months he could hardly eat anything that was served to him, and she was able to argue on his behalf as a student clinician at Michigan's Sixth Circuit. The court published the opinion ruling in his favor. She will speak on her work in this specific case.

Walter Lomax, Executive Director, Maryland Restorative Justice Initiative. Mr. Lomax was unjustly incarcerated in a Baltimore area prison for 39 years for crimes he didn't commit. Since his exoneration and release in 2007, he has used his voice to become a powerful, influential advocate for criminal justice reform in MD. He is the founder and leader of the Maryland Restorative Justice Initiative. In 2021, The Walter Lomax Act (Senate Bill 14) was signed into law, overhauling how the state compensates people who are wrongfully convicted, sentenced, and incarcerated for crimes.

Natasha Dartigue (J.D), Office of the Public Defender, Baltimore, MD. She was just appointed in 2022 as Maryland's Public Defender and served in a related capacity in advocating for the rights of the incarcerated for more than twenty years. She and her office have been associated with helping exonerate a number of individuals recently. Ms. Dartigue will speak about the work of the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. On March 18, 1963, the United States Supreme Court guaranteed the right to counsel to indigent defendants in criminal cases in the landmark case, Gideon v. Wainwright. On July 1, 1971, the Maryland Legislature created the Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD). OPD opened its doors in 1972 and is an independent state agency.

Asian Studies December Updates

<Tagline>Finals Events! Lipitz Lecture! Have You Been Advised?</Tagline>

Somehow, it is December, and the end of the semester is nearly upon us. As we race into finals and the holiday season, here are some highlights of things happening on and around campus and classes in the coming days - be sure to take a look!

Spring 2024 Advising - Are You Registered?

Classes for Spring 2024 are filling quickly! Have you received your advising clearance and finished your registration for the coming semester? If not, it's not too late!

Start here with our advising guide for Asian Studies students. The start of Spring 2024 will be here sooner than you think - don't wait!

Winter Class Offering Reminders

If you've registered for Spring 2024 but are thinking about an empty January with not much to do, have you considered taking a Winter Session class? There are two classes available which count towards an Asian Studies major, minor, or certificate:

ASIA 300: Modern East Asia [online, asynchronous]

HIST 381: From Samurai to Salariman [online, asynchronous]

Registration for Winter 2024 is open and ongoing! For more information about dates, fees, and other details, visit the Winter Session website.

Tomorrow: Lipitz Lecture with Dr. Vaporis

The final session in Fall 2023's Humanities Forum is tomorrow's Lipitz Lecture. Dr. Vaporis's talk, "The Black Ships: Commodore Perry, American Exceptionalism, and the Opening of Japan, 1852-54," will explore the story of the official American expedition to Japan in 1852-54 to “open” the far-flung country to trade and a western-based diplomatic order. It also argues for the need to reassess the importance of the mission in the context of U.S. foreign policy and history, and to highlight it as one of the earliest, most significant, and in many respects successful, exercises in American imperialism.

You can attend the Lipitz Lecture at 4pm in the Library Gallery tomorrow - Wednesday, December 6.

Upcoming Dates and Deadlines

Dec 6 - Lipitz Lecture - 4pm, Library Gallery [see above]

Dec 12 - Last day of classes. Deadline for Complete Term Withdrawal

<Tagline>Please encourage students to complete SCEs</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

The fall 2023 student course evaluation (SCE) process is underway! The SCEs will be available online through Tuesday, December 12, at 11:59 p.m.

Completing your student course evaluations is helpful for understanding and evaluating student and faculty experiences in the current learning environment. All responses are anonymous and are not released until after fall semester grades have been submitted.

You can access the online SCE with any device--desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone. The online SCEs are accessible by email link, a BlackBoard building block link, and a "Student Course Evaluations" link that is available on myUMBC. Once you have accessed the SCE application, use your myUMBC credentials to navigate to your Profile. Once logged in, students will see a list of courses in which they are enrolled and will be able to complete a survey.

Faculty are encouraged to promote the SCE survey and to remind students that the survey can be completed anytime from now through December 12, at 11:59 p.m.
