A Continued Focus on Safety, Care, and Support

<Tagline>Updates and Expectations</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

As we look ahead to the remainder of the semester, we know that the usual busyness of this season and the last few weeks of classes and final exams may feel especially challenging in the context of world events, most especially the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Many among our UMBC community continue to feel direct and indirect impacts of the conflict, as well as of the resulting rise in antisemitism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia toward Israelis and Palestinians that we are seeing throughout society.

Here on our campus, the month of December brings not only end-of-semester deadlines and exams, but also celebrations and special occasions, including many student-organized religious observations.

All of this is on our minds. We are thinking carefully about how to continue to best support and attend to the well-being of all members of our community--students, faculty, and staff--and foster a healthy campus climate that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive. We have reached out with support and care for individuals who are being directly affected by events abroad and here at home. We are attending to safety and security needs and responding to any reports of harassment, discrimination, or threats. We also have met and are continuing to meet with relevant student organizations, as well as with members of UMBC's Religious Council, to hear and understand their perspectives and work toward the ongoing co-creation of the inclusive community we strive to be.

Some additional updates:

As we continue to work closely with student organizations to ensure the safety of their events and activities, we have increased the level of security in the Commons broadly. If you have an immediate concern about safety on campus, please contact the UMBC Police Department at 410-455-5555.

For students in particular, we will offer resources and events to help you manage stress through the end of the semester. Please watch for details in the coming days. Faculty and staff can continue to access such support through our Employee Assistance Program.

We know that UMBC's academic calendar is especially demanding in the fall semester. We are undertaking a review of the calendar for potential adjustments in future years.

Heading into the final weeks of the semester, remember that it is our collective responsibility to help ensure that every member of our community feels safe, welcomed, and valued. Please continue to report any incidents of harassment or bias through the Office of Equity and Civil Rights' online reporting form, or by emailing ecr@umbc.edu or calling 410-455-1717. We must show respect for differing viewpoints, beliefs, practices, and needs, and we ask you to continue to extend kindness, compassion, and flexibility to one another, knowing that individuals may be struggling. Grant yourself some grace, as well. These are challenging days.

Finally, we share with you the attached message from University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay A. Perman, which he sent to system colleagues just before Thanksgiving. In it, he reminds us of the promise of higher education to help us bridge what divides us, and he expresses his hope that in time we will go beyond words denouncing hate to achieve "a shared commitment to using our work for light and peace." We join Chancellor Perman in this hope, and we believe in the power of this extraordinary community to realize it.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby

Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs David P. Dauwalder

Vice President for Institutional Equity and Chief Diversity Officer Tanyka M. Barber

Vice President for Student Affairs Renique T. Kersh

We present an automatic tool for binding formal network protocol specifications to their underlying cryptographic contexts, eliminating harmful protocol interactions, including Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks. Operating in the strand space model, our tool takes as input an arbitrary two-party protocol specification, infers a cryptographic context from the protocol terms, and outputs a specification for an improved protocol that is the composition of the input protocol and our novel context-exchange protocol. Our context-exchange protocol binds cryptographic values to a unique session, using a Merkle hash tree to represent context. Our tool applies the following operations on context: initialize, append, sign, and verify. For each input protocol specification, our tool outputs context-equivalence security goals, which we then verify using the Cryptographic Protocol Shapes Analyzer (CPSA). To our knowledge, our tool is the first of its kind. It represents a significant step towards eliminating attacks resulting from unwanted protocol interactions, which are the cause for most known structural weaknesses in protocols. Support for this research was provided in part by the National Security Agency under an INSuRE+C grant via Northeastern University.

Unlock collaborative learning with cloud tools in Blackboard

<Tagline>Discover Google Workspace and Microsoft OneDrive</Tagline>

Cloud resources can transform a course design with streamlined document display and reduce storage footprint. Two new integrations from Google Workspace and Microsoft OneDrive offer cloud-based file management for Ultra courses. These tools allow faculty to select existing files, such as a syllabus or course schedule, and embed them seamlessly into a course for students to view. Customized privileges ensure only the document owner can modify the file within the framework of the course or the cloud drive while keeping the learner's access restricted to read-only.

Additionally, these tools support student collaboration, allowing for dynamic exchange of ideas, peer learning, co-authorship, and presentation planning. Creating a collaborative document in Google or Microsoft provides an exciting opportunity for faculty to support student teamwork in a shared environment directly embedded in the Ultra course space. Leverage these tools with students for real-time writing and editing, brainstorming, project planning, and other collaborative experiences.

Campus Life and i3b staff present at ACPA Conference

Presenters are: Campus Life Coordinator for Leadership Beatriz Gutierrez-Malagon; i3b Assistant Director Angelina R. Jenkins; and i3b Assistant Director Carlos Turcios '15, psychology and sociology, and M.A. '17, applied sociology.

Entitled "Fostering Students' Identity and Capacity to Lead as Their Full Selves," the presentation includes highlights and outcomes of the Multicultural Leadership Experience. Additionally, they will be sharing insight and resources on how to implement a culturally relevant leadership learning program on campus as student affairs practitioners. A collaboration between Campus Life and i3b, the program provides a space for students and student leaders who identify with diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers.

In the post-assessment, students who have participated in the Multicultural Leadership Experience say it has helped them grow as people and as leaders:

"I gained a lot of knowledge of my identities but also specific types of leadership that are not often covered in other leadership experiences. Emotionally intelligent leadership, self-authorship, and cultural wealth were all things I had never heard of before, and I think learning about these things in a Brave Space with my peers was a great opportunity! Definitely loved having the opportunity to be involved in this MLE cohort."

"After being a part of the MLE experience, it has made me feel more confident about what kind of person I can be for my community. I learned about social roles, demonstrating citizenship, understanding what a leader is, and much more that I can apply to my future and future career."

"From this experience I gained a deeper understanding of identities and the role they play in how we show up in the world. I also became more aware of how these may impact relationships with diverse groups and more importantly how it affects myself and how I show up for leadership. Now I can analyze my interactions with others and understand how my identity would impact how I am feeling in the said moment (as well as theirs) and with that understanding make a healthy and conscious decision of how to react."

"The ideas of the crossroad and self-authorship really resonated with me. I internalized them. I'm constantly thinking about how my decisions are made based on those ideas, my goals, and my values; because of them, I'm able to gauge and analyze my actions in a way that helps me move closer towards being the person that I want to be."

"I gained so much from this experience. Self-authorship was the biggest thing for me. It is a term I had never heard of before and now I am working toward it for myself. This cohort challenged me to examine negative ideas about myself as a returning student and help me examine leadership differently. The assignment I worked on with a partner helped me see how I could apply what I have learned with the cohort to create change on campus in my own way. It was great to hear from other members of the cohort and the facilitators about their experiences and background. Many of our experiences aligned even with our varying identities and backgrounds."

"I gained a strong ability to critically reflect on how I show up in various spaces as a leader along with the wonderful stories that everyone else shared along the way."

"Because of MLE I strive to be a leader that works with and brings out the best in others, understand and factors in their identities and how it may impact how they show up, and remain mindful and open to others' suggestions. I also strive to be bold, confident and unafraid of speaking up for what I believe in."

Applications for the spring 2024 cohort are now closed. See the attached flyer for more information.

PhD student Carson Evans stores quantum entanglement!

Entangled photons display counterintuitive correlations that are stronger than anything allowed by classical physics - something Einstein once called "spooky action at a distance". They are now recognized as a key resource for the ongoing quantum information revolution, and the 2022 Nobel prize for physics was awarded for experiments with entangled photons.

Technological and scientific advances have made the production of entangled photons relatively easy, but storing them in quantum memories has remained a significant challenge. In a recent Letter in Physical Review A, a team led by UMBC PhD student Carson Evans report on an experimental demonstration of storing quantum entanglement in a broadband loop-based quantum memory device. Roughly speaking, the experiment showed that entangled photons remained entangled after the storage, which represents a crucial requirement for scaling-up towards a future "quantum internet".

"We're thrilled about our memory's performance and the possible avenues of study it opens for us", says Evans. "Next steps involve expanding our quantum memory toolbox and showcasing more sophisticated quantum information protocols."
