Alumna West named among top women in non-profit leadership
Public Policy alumna Sherece Y. West-Scantlebury (Ph.D. '07)
Public Policy alumna Sherece Y. West-Scantlebury (Ph.D. '07) has been named among top women in non-profit leadership by Women We Admire.
She received UMBC's Outstanding Alumnus/na in the Social and Behavioral Sciences in October 2013.
From the article:
"Sherece West is the President & CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, a private foundation that seeks to disrupt the systems that block Arkansans who are striving to get out of poverty. They are in relentless pursuit of educational, economic, social, ethnic, and racial equity. West is a leading 21st-century voice on the eradication of global poverty. From her early beginnings impacting policy as a lobbyist in NYC, to leading programs at some of the most prestigious foundations in the Southeastern United States, West has been unwavering in her quest to increase prosperity amongst marginalized groups and end poverty in her lifetime. West currently serves as the President and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation in Little Rock, Arkansas where she has led the organization through reinvention and tremendous growth over the last decade.
Known for her leadership in the areas of community development, public policy, and disaster recovery, West is a transformational leader who is unafraid to ask the tough questions that challenge conventional thinking, action, and funding around impoverished communities. 2024-2025 FAFSA
The FAFSA will be available in December!
Have you heard the news? The FAFSA application is changing! Students planning to attend UMBC in the 2024-2025 aid year will complete the newly improved FAFSA application. In the past, the FAFSA was available in early October. As a result of the significant changes, the FAFSA application will now be available in December, 2023. Check out our FAFSA changes page for updates on the FAFSA release date. Once the application is open you will still need to use UMBC's school code 002105.
Information about the FAFSA application all other Federal Aid programs can be found on
StudentAid.gov.

Everyone loves the performance t-shirts we made last time (see picture below). This is why we're doing it again this year! Though our budget is very limited, we will do the best to order different styles and sizes for our group. Our plan is to have the t-shirts ready for giveaways in Spring 2024.

Mental Health First Aid
If you've never taken Mental Health First Aid (or it's been 3 years or more since you've taken it), now is the time to sign up for training!
We are excited to offer the UMBC community a 1-day skills-based training course designed to teach participants how to:
- recognize signs of mental health or substance use disorders.
- identify community resources.
- link people in crisis to the proper resources.
The course will consist of a 2-hour self-paced introduction course online, followed by a 6-hour virtual skills session with Mental Health First Aid instructors. You will learn a 5-step action plan and practice applying it throughout the skills section of the course.
Space is limited! You must register NO LATER than one week prior to the date of the training.

As we shared with you during our first GBM of the new year two weeks ago, we are looking for some new members for our e-board. We are in search for a treasurer and a social media manager.
The election form is now open and we ask that you complete it before this upcoming Wednesday evening (Oct 4th).
