October Updates & Reminders

Residential Retrievers--

As we enter a new month, we want to provide you with some important residential updates.

Important Dates

October 1, 2023 | Spring Student Success Scholarship Opens on Scholarship Retriever

Week of October 9, 2023 | Health & Safety Inspections

October 8-14, 2023 | Homecoming & Family Weekend

October 31, 2023 | Spring Student Success Scholarship Deadline

Mail & Package Reminders

Residential students are encouraged to have mail and packages delivered directly to their residential community during the academic year. All residents are assigned a mailbox and combination that they will share with their roommate(s). If you have misplaced your combination you can ask the Community Desk for assistance.

Mail and packages that are not addressed for a current residential student and/or a residential facility may be refused by staff at Campus Card & Mail Services, Central Receiving, or Residential Life community desks.

Commonly, students report that they have received notice from the shipper that their package has been delivered, but it is not immediately available for in-community pick up. This is most often due to misdelivery of packages by third-party carriers. For this reason, we highly encourage students to include the name of their residential community desk in the shipping address to ensure packages are directed to their communities rather than Central Receiving or another UMBC building.

When items are misdelivered by carriers, we ask for student's patience as Campus Card & Mail Services, Central Receiving, and Residential Life staff work to redirect, deliver, and log packages appropriately. This can take up to 3 business days.

For more information about mail and package procedures please visit https://reslife.umbc.edu/rlexperience/procedures/

Guests & Visitors

You are welcome to have guests, but for the safety and comfort of the residential community, residence halls and apartments are locked 24 hours and only accessible to residents of that community and University officials.

If you plan to have a guest visit it is your responsibility to:

Meet them at the entrance of your building

Sign them in at your Community Desk each time they enter the building

Sign them out at your Community Desk each time they leave the buildings

Accompany your guest when they are with you

As a reminder, a host can only have up to 4 guests signed in at a time

For a complete list of policies and guidelines please review the UMBC Residential Life Rights & Responsibilities Guide.

Room Change Options

For the fall semester, opportunities are very limited as we are relatively full this semester. Below is some information about room change options and recommendations.

Room Swaps

Students interested in making a mutual swap must submit an RT Ticket, indicating with whom they would like to swap rooms. Once Residential Life receives the requests from all parties involved in the swap, they will review and send the students updated room assignment and room change instructions to their UMBC email.

End of Semester Room Changes

Students looking to change rooms for the Spring Semester, should contact their Community Director about opportunities for End of Semester Room Changes (ESRC) during the month of November.

If their Community Director believes they are eligible for an ESRC, they may be issued the ESRC Application. There is a firm deadline of November 30 at 11:59PM to submit the ESRC application. Late applications will not be considered.

Submission of an ESRC application does not guarantee approval. Priority for ESRC approval is as follows: students with an accommodation approval from Student Disability Services, and students approved for an administrative move by Residential Life.

Roommate Conflicts

Residents experiencing a roommate conflict and those seeking a room change during the semester are encouraged to first seek assistance from their RA or Community Director before a room change will be considered.

If the Community Director determines that a room change is appropriate, they will provide you with options and next steps based on the availability of space. When possible, a new housing assignment will be made to an existing vacancy.

Health & Safety Inspections

Residential Life values the co-creation of a safe environment in every residential community. It is the responsibility of every resident to ensure that they are contributing to a safe and healthy environment in their residence by:

committing to community standards set at the beginning of each year with their floor

reviewing and adhering to the Residential Life Rights and Responsibilities Guide,

submitting requests for facility maintenance

It is the responsibility of Residential Life staff to educate residents through positive, personal contact, maintain the residential facilities and conduct health and safety checks in residential rooms intermittently throughout the semester to identify health and safety issues in a timely way. These issues could include facility issues, fire safety, and the presence of prohibited items.

This semester, Residential Life staff will be conducting these health and safety inspections on the week of October 9, 2023. Residents are not expected to be present during the inspection, but if you would like to be please contact your RA to schedule a time.

If concerns or issues are found in your room, you will receive notification via email. Please review the email and follow the instructions for correcting the issues in advance of a reinspection. Failure to correct the issues by the reinspection date, outlined in the email, may result in Student Conduct Action.

If you have questions about these inspections, please contact your Resident Assistant or Community Director.

Student Success Scholarship

The purpose of the Student Success Scholarship is to assist current residential life students who demonstrate significant financial need to remain on-campus residents, who may otherwise be unable to afford housing during the academic year. The scholarship is supported by Residential Life. Award funds are for the following semester. If you are applying in fall, the funds would be applied for the spring semester housing balance. Several scholarships may be awarded each semester. Funds will vary based on eligibility and will range from full semester housing costs to partial semester housing costs, not to exceed the cost of a double room

The application is open on Scholarship Retriever from October 1-31 for Spring Awards.

Meet a Retriever—Ting Huang ’21, McNair Scholars coordinator extraordinaire

Meet Ting Huang ’21, psychology, program coordinator for the McNair Scholars Program in the Office of Academic Opportunity Programs where she was previously a scholar. Ting is now in a position where she gets to support the UMBC community the same way, she says, it supported her. Let’s see what she has to share!

Q: What’s one essential thing you’d want another Retriever to know about you?

A: I’m a UMBC McNair alum and my undergraduate field of study was psychology. I’m currently the interim program coordinator for UMBC McNair, and it has been a very meaningful, full circle moment for me to come back and serve students in the same boat as myself just two years ago.

Q: What’s the one thing you’d want someone to know about the support you find at UMBC?

A: Don’t hesitate to reach out. It can be daunting to try to find community, particularly on a campus where you may not know which communities are safe or supportive of you. But UMBC has many wonderful scholarly programs and clubs that celebrate different parts of each person’s identities. Community is just a step away from you.

Q: Tell us about someone in the community who has inspired you or supported you, and how they did it.

A: So many people in the UMBC community have inspired and supported me, but especially my mentors at UMBC-Shady Grove and my McNair family. Each person I’ve encountered has dedicated their time to academic excellence and uplifting the voices of those who are traditionally unheard (first-gen, low-income, underrepresented individuals). Their advocacy and passion inspires me to pursue intersectional research and do my best to support my scholars. I love the sense of community that we’ve cultivated in McNair. Although I was away for two years, I was quickly welcomed back into the family when I took on my new role. Even though I am the program coordinator, I feel that my students inspire me to strive for excellence through the amazing things they do.

Q: What brought you to UMBC in the first place?

A: I came to UMBC because of the strong sense of community I had experienced second-hand before beginning my undergraduate career here. I had heard from my cousin (UMBC alum Rose Li ’16, M.P.S. ’21) and visiting faculty about the freedom that UMBC students have in exploring their passions and undergraduate research, and decided that an undergraduate career here would be most beneficial for me. As a staff member, the McNair connections I made pulled me back to UMBC after earning my master’s. I was excited to come back to a community that supported me even though I was at another institution.

Q: What part of your job do you enjoy the most and why?

A: Talking to scholars! It’s truly inspiring to listen to my scholars’ aspirations as they will be the future leaders of the world. It’s exciting to hear about the changes that the students want to make so that those from similar backgrounds to ours can receive ample support before entering higher ed.

UMBC’s greatest strength is its people. When people meet Retrievers and hear about the passion they bring, the relationships they create, the ways they support each other, and the commitment they have to inclusive excellence, they truly get a sense of our community. That’s what “Meet a Retriever” is all about.

UMBC joins collaboration to create new STEM education, research center at Arecibo Observatory site in Puerto Rico

This week UMBC was named as one of four institutions chosen to work together on a National Science Foundation-funded project to establish a new science educational center at the Arecibo Observatory site in Puerto Rico. NSF will contribute more than $5 million over five years to establish the multidisciplinary center, called the Arecibo Center for Culturally Relevant and Inclusive Science Education, Computational Skills, and Community Engagement (Arecibo C3).

The center is expected to open in early 2024 and will include a research laboratory and a hands-on, interactive science center open to the public.

Patricia Ordóñez (Photo courtesy of Patricia Ordóñez)

Patricia Ordóñez,M.S. ’10, Ph.D. ’12, computer science, an associate professor in information systems, will lead UMBC’s contributions to the project. As part of the Arecibo C3 collaboration, Ordóñez is organizing a Women in Data Science Puerto Rico conference, as well as several workshops in data science that will be held both online and in person. One of the workshops will prepare attendees to participate in the 2024 Women in Data Science Worldwide datathon. Other workshops will recruit mothers and daughters to learn coding together, and will teach new skills to women and other participants who already code.

Several UMBC graduate and undergraduate students and staff members have been involved in developing and testing the workshop materials.

“My passion has always been to increase the number of Latinas in computing,” says Ordóñez, who, before joining the faculty of UMBC, was a member of the computer science department at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. “There are too few of us in the field—creating inclusive programs from Arecibo C3 will help us bridge that gap.”

The other grant awardees are Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras, and the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. In addition to data science programming, Arecibo C3 will offer a suite of activities, including explorations of biodiversity and how to identify species using short segments of DNA. The Arecibo C3 team will also advance research to explore how STEM teaching can be enhanced through the presentation of data in audio, tactile, and other sensory forms, to increase accessibility.

“The new educational center builds on the great scientific, educational, and cultural legacy of the Arecibo Observatory and is closely aligned with NSF’s goal to create STEM opportunities everywhere,” said James L. Moore III, NSF assistant director for STEM Education, in a press release. “The center aims to create new opportunities for STEM education, exploration, discovery, engagement and participation of students, scientists and researchers in various STEM disciplines ranging from astronomy and radio science to biological, computer and natural sciences in Puerto Rico and beyond.”

Ordóñez credits the talents of the whole Arecibo C3 team with turning what feels like a dream of hers into a reality. “We recognize the responsibility of what we are doing and we are going to work very hard to create the environment of inclusive excellence in Arecibo that everyone deserves, so that everyone sees they have a place in STEM,” she says.

6 Faculty, 2 Staff Receive 2023-24 LA Mini Grants

<Tagline>$2k professional development awards renewable annually</Tagline>

To encourage, identify, and share effective practices in the use of data to inform teaching and learning, the Provost's Office has once again awarded learning analytics mini grants to six faculty and two staff for the 2023-24 academic year (the three new grants and three renewals are described below):

Birger plans to investigate these discrepancies by analyzing data from Blackboard sections of both courses, to identify variables such as instructor differences, textbook usage, attendance, homework submission, and access to Panopto recordings that might affect student success rates. The findings will help standardize effective learning activities and enhance the learning assessment plan. To do so, Birger aims to implement and test evidence-based curriculum changes in PBHL 300 and then monitor student performance in PBHL 420. The overall goal is to improve student knowledge and skills in public health, better preparing them for the workforce or graduate education and enhancing the continuous improvement of the Public Health curriculum.

Additionally, the researchers will investigate the potential benefits of incentivization through micro-credentialing. Through these approaches, Taylor and Passera hope to support both student growth and improve their pathways to academic success.

Rebecca Williams(CS/EE): "Improving Student Visual Literacy & Critical Thinking in CMSC 436/636 (Data Visualization)."This new proposal focusing on course redesign as an intervention to address student misconceptions about visualizations, such as the misunderstanding that simple, easy-to-read, charts are always effective and the belief that data visualizations are entirely objective. Williams' proposed interventions include having students search for, annotate, and critique visualization examples, to supplement those she provides (and models) herself. As such, students are more likely to develop these skills and the process is likely to lead to the long-term retention of these same skills.

Specifically, he has used ungraded practice questions, in terms of points contributing to a final grade, but including correct and incorrect answers displayed to students. Students in his PHYS 122 "Introductory Physics II," who use the practice questions clearly perform better on unit, midterm and final exams, but he'd like to see more students do so. He plans to continue development of his practice questions, but also do more proactive nudging with myUMBC personal posts (similar to Carpenter and Bass in Chemistry described above) to see if and how more students might use and benefit from the practice question bank.

"On behalf of Interim Provost Dauwalder, we're pleased to continue offering these learning analytics mini grants to help faculty use institutional data that might inform their course designs and instruction to the benefit of our students," says Robert Carpenter, associate provost and deputy CIO. "We are excited by these interesting projects and look forward to what the faculty may find."

These one-year learning analytics awards are renewable pending receipt of a final report, paper submitted for publication or conference presentation.
Congratulating Janet Magruder

<Tagline>On her Retirement!</Tagline>

Janet Magruder has worked at UMBC since 1992, serving in many areas before joining the Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture (formerly the Fine Arts Gallery) in 1999. She served as a Senator for the Classified Senate from 1995-2002, Chair for the Review Committee from 1995-1997, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Council University State System between 1998-2001. Her final day at UMBC will be September 29, 2023.

Janet has played many important roles for CADVC. She not only administered our business and financial matters, but mentored staff and student workers and advised artists, colleagues, vendors, and partners on CADVC's highly specialized business and administrative matters. She is patient, helpful, and kind. Student workers under her supervision would stop by the gallery to greet Janet or tell her that "working at CADVC doesn't feel like work." Janet's generous administrative care sustained our physical space, working conditions, and the experiences of staff, artists and audiences alike.

So many people at CADVC and in the wider University know and love Janet, and we will all miss her. Please join me in wishing her well in her next steps as she moves on from her storied career at UMBC.

Happy Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival!

<Tagline>A Celebration of the Autumn Harvest</Tagline>

The Mid Autumn Festival is a harvest festival and holiday that takes place on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Lunar calendar. Predominately observed across Asian countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and many other ethnic Chinese communities.

While celebrating the autumn harvest as a whole is a focus of this time of year, depending on which Asian culture and country you are focusing on, you will find different cultural traditions and beliefs such as an emphasis on the moon, gathering with family, and even honoring those who have passed. Across all of these countries, the importance of gathering with family and loved ones can be seen.

Each country has its own name or reference for the Mid Autumn Festival, here are some of them (for additional viewing, please see the attached photo):
