Asian Cultural Celebration & Awards

Thursday, May 14, 2026

5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. 

University Center Ballroom 3rd Floor

This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia. 

During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.

Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance. 

Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. 

Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.

If you would like to nominate a community member for one of our Affinity Celebration & Awards, you may nominate them here using the Awards Nomination Form or https://forms.gle/TLH8uDwccy5gBJtj8. You may submit multiple nominations for the same or different individuals. Please submit all nominations by April 20th, 2026. 

For those interested in attending, you can RSVP HERE!  Save the date on your calendars! Graduates that RSVP by Thursday, April 30th at 6pm will be highlighted during the event and receive honorary graduation cords.

Rhoda Nankabirwa and and Alabi Jamiu Ahmed, UMBC PhD students and Graduate Researchers, recently attended and served on the organizing committee for the Imageomics Institute NextGen Day workshop. During the event, Rhoda and Jamiu engaged in meaningful dialogue with fellow emerging scientists and researchers. The day-long event featured insightful sessions on interdisciplinary career pathways, science communication, and strategies for thriving in collaborative research environments.

Thank you to Imageomics for hosting an invaluable workshop for the NextGen of Researchers and Scientists and allowing us to be apart of it!

“Realizing the Power of History: Past, Present, and Future Strategies” will take place on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the Corcoran Museum, George Washington University, Washington, DC. This NCPH mini-conference will bring together a diverse group of current practitioners—museum professionals, historic site interpreters, public history educators, and others engaged in historical inquiry and knowledge creation—to identify and name the challenges impacting the future of our field. 

We will share ideas and discuss approaches for bringing our work and our historical knowledge to bear against concerning trends.

• What are successful historical strategies for putting history to work to refute misunderstanding and misinformation about the country’s past?
• How have institutions that practice history for the public served the public, especially its most vulnerable communities?
• What does this work look like today? 
• What might it look like in the future?
• What are the specific, new threats we must prepare ourselves to face? What will be required of us?

In the morning we’ll adopt an “un-conference” format to create breakout sessions based on relevant issues in the field, and share quick case studies about effective strategies to use public history as a tool in service of advocacy or justice.

The event will culminate with NCPH President and UMBC History Department Chair, Denise Meringolo, leading a presidential roundtable discussion with Patty Arteaga (Smithsonian Institution), Dan Kerr (American University), and Elon Cook Lee (National Trust for Historic Preservation) will help Denise see her NCPH presidency out by tackling issues raised in the morning’s breakout sessions and articulating strategies for unifying and amplifying public history efforts to hold our hard-won ground for inclusive and community-driven public history practice.

Welcome to Week 11 of the Tabletop Gaming club!

We are rapidly approaching the end of the semester (Insert Shock and horror here) So good luck to everyone with the last few weeks and the ever looming finals!

We have a couple announcements for this week, so lets get started!

As per usual club will be held Tonight Tuesday 4/21 and Thursday 4/23 from 7-10pm in ILSB116B be there or be hexagonal.

Now as for events: Tuesday President Joshua Bowman will be bringing extra supplies from our protyping event, if anyone is interested in last minute constructing a protype board game for Fridays Playtest and judging day this is the time to do so! This will be held alongside regular club.

Thursday In honor of Earth day, we will be holding our Touch Grass event! this is the time for you to go and enjoy the world outside of ILSB (Though not mandatory by any means, please stay inside if you got allergies), President Josh will be hosting a campus wide outdoor game "It's a 4 player strategy game where teams race to complete tasks all across campus before time runs out." So feel free to come join and have fun alongside the regular meeting. (And maybe touch some grass).

Friday This is the third part of our Collab with the game dev club! Come testout your prototype board games in a fun and inclusive environment! should you be interested you may also signup to have your board game judged by our team of "Expert" judges!
