    <div class="html-content">
    <div>Dear UMBC Community,</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>On behalf of the Strategic Plan Steering Committee, I invite you to share your perspectives on UMBC’s strategic plan via <a href="https://umbc.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bjf3tIQFg6ykQaq" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">this survey</a>. The survey includes five sections, each aligned with one of the university’s strategic pillars. As a reminder, the pillars are: </div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>Cultivate organizational innovation and vitality</li>
    <li>Redefine excellence in research and creative achievement</li>
    <li>Strengthen Maryland and its communities</li>
    <li>Advance student opportunity and success</li>
    <li>Transform teaching and learning</li>
    </ul></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>You can choose which sections you would like to complete based on your interests and experiences. The survey is also designed to capture additional ideas you may have for strengthening these five focus areas. Please note that each section of the survey will take approximately 10 - 15 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous and confidential.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>We also invite you to visit the <a href="https://umbc.edu/leadership/strategic-plan/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">strategic planning website</a> for current information, including a new feedback form now available on the home page. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Finally, as our pillar subgroups prepare to introduce their engagement activities, be sure to follow the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/announcements/posts/157115/7b9fe/3ee411d6fde7919ffebe7cab99df050c/email/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fmy3.my.umbc.edu%2Fgroups%2Fplanning" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">myUMBC Strategic Planning group</a> for information about scheduled engagement events. We will also continue to email the UMBC campus community about additional opportunities to engage in the planning process.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>We hope that you will complete the survey by Tuesday, April 7. Your insights, ideas, and feedback are essential as we continue the planning process.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Thank you for your support.</div>

<Title>talk: Agentic Vibe Coding from the Terminal, 4/3</Title>
<Tagline>1:00-2:30pm ET, April 3, 2026, ITE 325b and online</Tagline>
<Body>

    <h3><span>Agentic Vibe Coding from the Terminal</span></h3>
    <h5>Prof. Tim Oates, UMBC</h5>
    <h5>1-2:30pm ET, April 3, 2026, ITE 325b and <a href="http://umbc.webex.com/meet/finin" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">online</a>
    </h5>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Large language models have become surprisingly capable coding partners - not just for autocomplete, but for turning a rough problem statement into runnable code, tests, and iterative improvements. In this talk I'll give a short, technical overview of why coding assistants work (internet-scale code + documentation pretraining, instruction tuning, and feedback loops), and where they predictably fail (ambiguous specs, hidden requirements, brittle dependencies, and "confidently wrong" outputs).</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Most of the session is live, terminal-based demos using <a href="https://code.claude.com/docs/en/overview" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Claude Code</strong></a>. We'll start from plain-English requirements and iteratively produce working implementations: scaffolding a small project, generating tests, debugging failures, refactoring for clarity/performance, and adding documentation. Along the way I'll highlight practical workflows: "spec-first prompting", test-driven prompting, using the assistant to explain unfamiliar code, and using constraints to keep changes small and reviewable. The goal is for faculty and students to leave with repeatable patterns for using coding assistants effectively - without outsourcing understanding or sacrificing correctness.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><div><p>Dr. Tim Oates is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He received B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1989, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1997 and 2000, respectively. Prior to coming to UMBC in the Fall of 2001, he spent a year as a postdoc researcher in the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Lab. In 2004 Dr. Oates won a prestigious NSF CAREER award. He is an author or co-author of more than 200 peer reviewed papers and is a member of ACM and AAAI.</p></div></div>

    <p>Join us for our end of the year Celebration &amp; Awards! </p>
    <p><strong>Asian Cultural Celebration &amp; Awards</strong></p>
    <p><strong>Thursday, May 14, 2026</strong></p>
    <p><strong>5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. </strong></p>
    <p><strong>University Center Ballroom 3rd Floor</strong></p>
    <p>This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia. </p>
    <p>During the gathering, we'll enjoy food together, we'll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who've contributed to their success.</p>
    <p>Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance. </p>
    <p>Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. </p>
    <p>Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.</p>
