Spring break is fast approaching, residents in 8-month communities are expected to leave during spring break.  UMBC does not provide temporary or break housing for those assigned to 8-month communities.

If traveling home is not an option, especially during short breaks, we encourage students and families to make off-campus arrangements.  Please consider this list of hotels near UMBC as potential options.

Please be prepared to complete the following before departing for break to help ensure the
overall health & safety of your room and personal belongings:
  • Clean your bathroom and personal spaces well. Leave the bathroom door open for ventilation. Make sure it’s okay with your suitemates before leaving the bathroom door(s) unlocked.
  • Remove and dispose of all trash in a trash room or a dumpster.
  • Set the heat between 68-72.
  • Unplug all appliances and extension cords from the wall, excluding microfridges and fish tanks.
  • Feed fish and water plants.
  • Take valuables home including medicine, passports, pet fish, and any other items you will need over break. Communities will be inaccessible during break.
  • Remove all remaining personal items from the floor and place on elevated surfaces. Reminder: Renter’s Insurance is strongly recommended in the event of flood, fire, or theft.
  • Turn off water. Make sure faucets are not dripping.
  • Turn off lights and bathroom exhaust fans.
  • Close and lock all windows and doors.
  • Close blinds on ground floor rooms; leave blinds up on all other floors.
  • Clean your refrigerator and dispose of perishable items.
  • Report facilities concerns to FXIT (x53948).
  • Complete the check-out receipt via the Housing Portal
9-Month residents, you are not required to vacate your assignments, but if you choose to leave, please follow the above checklist as well.

Disabling Intelligences: AI's Eugenics Problem is Our Eugenics Problem 

Abstract:  Eugenics is more than a failed social movement, driving debunked and outdated race science. Eugenics was and remains a collection of beliefs that persist throughout our societies, undergird our scientific inquiry, and shape our public policy as well as our interpersonal relationships. I explore how implementations of AI systems manifest many kinds of eugenics, from overt to covert, through the concept of Metaeugenics—the internalized beliefs that drive eugenic behaviors at the personal, interpersonal, and political levels. A new digital divide is forming between those that have the privilege to opt-out of artificial services and those that are forced into the labor that sustains them. This proliferation is enabled by a metaeugenic worship of intelligence and a belief that most people do not possess enough of it. Our collective belief in our own inadequacy is required to sustain the AI project. I prepare attendees to critically evaluate the motivations and consequences of the emerging and pervasive AI systems which claim to sell us a utopia while sustaining personal and environmental devastation. I provide an analytical tool for understanding the premises of an AI project, unmasking its false promises, and, within the bounds of your role in relation to this project, devising the possible actions you can take to build a better world.
