Quantum Entanglement outreach in Baltimore!

<Tagline>Posted: November 14, 2025</Tagline>

Dr. Todd Pittman, Director of UMBC's Quantum Science Institute and Professor of Physics, gave a lively and accessible public lecture on November 12, 2025, at the Baltimore County Public Library's Perry Hall Branch. Community members of all ages gathered to hear Dr. Pittman trace the surprising history of quantum mechanics and quantum entanglement—from its early conceptual debates to groundbreaking experiments and Nobel Prize–winning discoveries.

Dr. Pittman also highlighted UMBC's influential role in advancing the field, including foundational contributions by Morton Rubin, James Franson, and Yanhua Shih. His enthusiasm for the subject was unmistakable, and his approachable style encouraged a remarkably long Q&A session—more than thirty minutes of thoughtful, challenging questions that ranged from the fundamentals of quantum mechanics to modern implementations and the future possibilities of quantum science.

It was an engaging evening that left attendees with a deeper appreciation of both the mystery and the impact of quantum physics.

Hello site admins!

This post has a lot of information in it. Please read carefully!

New Resources

The Sites team is excited to debut a few new self-help resources!

New Sites table class: Having table problems? Is Silktide flagging your table as causing 2D scrolling issues? Our new Sites table class "umbc-table" may be able to help.

Two articles for site admins participating in the digital accessibility remediation process that walk through our new Sites accessibility tools:

Site Admin Training

All Site admins with a Silktide account need to complete 2 Silktide training courses to get full access to Silktide. Site admins identified for the Digital Accessibility Remediation Project will be asked to complete 3 additional digital accessibility training courses in Silktide.

Project site admins: The timeline of when your training should be completed will depend on when we begin working with your site, however we encourage site admins who are able to complete theirs in advance to do so. If you aren't able to complete it in advance, we ask that you at minimum ensure you have a Silktide account established.

To request a Silktide account, go to umbc.edu/request and fill out the "Silktide Accessibility Scanning," which has a drop-down option to request a new account.

All site admins should complete these 2 courses in order to get access to the full Silktide capabilities:

Getting Started with Silktide (20 mins)

The Accessibility Module (10 mins)

Project site admins should complete these 3 additional courses:

Don't Be Afraid Of… (15 mins)

What in the World is WCAG? (60 mins)

Introduction to Web Accessibility (40 mins)

These trainings will be available to you once you have a Silktide account and are available in Silktide's Academy under Courses, which can be found at this link: https://app.us.silktide.com/baltimorecounty/everything/academy/courses

Future Project Phases

The remaining phases of the Sites Digital Accessibility project have been identified. The full list of phases and websites in each phase is available on the Sites website. These phases are based on our best estimate, and timelines may not be exact.

Each phase is broken out internally into multiple waves in order for us to better track progress and to stagger how many websites we have at each step of the process, meaning not all sites in each phase will be contacted at the beginning of that phase. If you are concerned about when we will begin work on your site, you are welcome to fill out a Sites RT to inquire, but we ask folks to be patient with us as well.

Questions? Concerns?

Questions or concerns about Silktide, please head to umbc.edu/request and fill out the Silktide Accessibility Scanning form.
Questions or concerns related to any other Sites topic, please fill out a Sites RT.

COMPASS Workshop

This workshop is meant for Ph.D. students and their faculty mentors. Ideally students will be at least a year into their Ph.D. work and getting close to starting their dissertation. This workshop has also been good for mentoring relationships that did not get off to the best start.

Workshop Agenda:

Noon - 12:45: Welcome and Lunch

1:00 - 2:45: Breakout sessions for students and faculty

3:00 - 3:30: Start discussing and filling out a "Sharing Expectations" document.

This semester we are offering this workshop at two different times:

Intern of the Week: Kayla Logue

<Tagline>Check out Kayla's Internship!</Tagline>

Name: Kayla Logue

Pronouns: She/Her

Semester of Internship: Spring 2026

Major: Dance

Current Class Level: Junior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): University Communications and Marketing

Location of the Organization (City, State): Baltimore, Maryland

Title of position: Student Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities: As an intern for UCM, I do a plethora of different projects and duties. I write for the UMBC magazine which may feature anything from an alumni interview I conducted, to highlighting a new initiative at UMBC, such as the Arts+ Initiative. I also assist in photography, make flyers to feature weekly campus events and athletics, interview different school clubs for social media highlights, and so much more!

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about this internship position from my scholarship director (Linehan Artist Scholars) in the summer of 2025. They provided me with the link to the application on Handshake, and from there I submitted my materials. The materials included a photo and caption, a writing sample, and my resume. After that was submitted, I was fortunate to be invited to a video interview. For the call, I needed to come prepared with three questions I would ask a UMBC students for a hypothetical story. Shortly after the interview, I was told that I had gotten the position for Fall 2025 through Spring of 2026!

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

Faculty Connections, Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

What I have enjoyed the most in this internship position has been getting to take pictures and feature the really awesome events UMBC holds for its community. So far, getting to create a feature about the UMBC Homecoming and Family Weekend was my favorite, and an absolute blast!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Through my work, I am grateful to have been able to highlight some really incredible people in the UMBC community and help them get their time in the spotlight. I feel that a lot of these features are eye-opening to the community, and this platform I have been given to share helps important stories be told and heard.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

For an internship such as mine, I would advise that they focus on their writing skills and learn from their mentors all that they can.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

"Using this platform I was given to feature others' stories and help them be heard is what I have liked most about this position".
