Graduate Student Support Group
Grad students have unique experiences that RIH can support.
Pursuing a graduate degree or Ph.D. is an incredible milestone in a person's academic career. Yet, maintaining wellness within graduate programs can often be challenging. The Graduate Student Support Group is a space for students to connect, share, and grow alongside others. This group will serve as a space to celebrate your strengths, resilience, and creativity while exploring strategies to thrive both academically and personally. Together, we'll focus on finding a balance between school and personal life, navigating relationships with advisors and peers, and managing stress and academic pressure, all while staying grounded in your values and career goals. This is ultimately a space to support one another, feel empowered, and find strength in community.
This group meets virtually on Tuesdays from 3 - 4:30 p.m. beginning February 17.
Due to licensure laws, all students must be located in the state of Maryland during the group to participate.
The first step to joining any group is to complete an Initial Consultation appointment. Please call us at 410-455-2542 or visit the RetrieverCare portal to schedule.

Healing from Family Challenges Group
Transition from surviving to thriving.
Healing from Family Challenges is a
six-week group that provides psychoeducation and skills that help address the effects
of adverse childhood experiences. It helps the members to recognize how these
past challenging experiences might be impacting their current functioning and
helps individuals identify healthy ways of coping with their experiences.
Students transition from surviving past experiences to thriving in the present.
The group creates a safe and supportive environment to develop an alternate way
of looking at the past and develop a sense of meaning and purpose that help
them thrive today.

STAIR: Climbing Toward Calm and Connection
Develop your emotion regulation and interpersonal skills!
Skills Training in the Application of Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) helps students who struggle with relationship dynamics and emotion regulation. High-stress experiences overwhelm the emotional system, creating both emotional chaos and numbing, undermining our ability to think and act effectively, and disturbing our sense of self and relationships. The skills training and practice introduced in this program are designed to help you leave behind old patterns and develop new interpersonal behaviors and emotion management skills more consistent with your current life goals.
The STAIR Group lasts 6 weeks and will run 2 times during Spring 2026, all rounds will be in-person.
Round 1: Tuesdays from 1:30 - 3 p.m. beginning February 17
Round 2: Fridays from 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. beginning March 27
Students who have completed STAIR have said:
- "The group setting is perfect and (I) never felt pressured to share anything I wasn't comfortable (with). You never feel alone, there is always someone listening."
- "I always thought group was going to be very intimidating, when it was first introduced I was scared. With group I learned about my feelings and new strategies that I utilize every day."
- "STAIR has provided me with (an) abundance of tools to help me face any challenges that come my way!"

The MICHR Translational Science Immersion (TSI) Program is a paid intensive and introductory level summer research experience for graduating seniors and graduate students enrolled in health professional degree or master's degree programs from across the country. This is a great opportunity for students to learn the fundamentals of research through individual and team-based learning experiences. In this program students will:
- Work with a mentor on an ongoing, funded research project
- Meet with community members who partner with academics in research
- Participate in classroom work and team projects
Participating students will be hired as temporary U-M employees and paid a salary.

This course will guide students through the steps of program development and implementation that reflects community culture and priorities. "Events and Programming as Inclusive Process" seeks to help students develop programming which connects multiple communities through shared activities and spaces, and addresses the importance of creating programs and events which respond to community needs, feedback, and assets. The course will equip students with an understanding of the concept of inclusive programming and the value of community engagement to create sustainable community programs and events.

This course will address the fundamentals of Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), how to practically implement ABCD in students' daily professional practice while developing a community of practice using ABCD, as well as, becoming ABCD practitioners in the field. Working through an ABCD process, participants can move towards whole-community mobilization through mapping the capacities assets of individuals, associations, and institutions while building relationships.

Organizations say a lot through their marketing, their grant proposals, and ultimately through their vision, mission, and values. But there's one major way to see if they're really walking the walk or just talking: their BUDGET! An organization's budget is their accountability to the things that they say. This course will teach students how to align their values and their intended impact with their budgets so that they can stand in integrity.

Start by Believing: Supporting Disclosures of Sexual Violence
January 14 | 12 pm - 1 pm | Virtual
This is a virtual interactive workshop in collaboration with UMBC police. The workshop is designed for faculty and staff who may be the first person a survivor confides in. Participants will learn about the start by believing campaign, build confidence in responding to disclosures of sexual violence, and strengthen our trauma-informed, survivor-centered campus community. Faculty are invited to schedule one-on-one practical sessions with members of SDS throughout January for hands-on support to improve ally score from red to green. Understanding Your Rights and Responsibilities Under Title IX

These virtual training sessions will cover topics such as an overview of the Office of Equity and Civil Rights (ECR), what constitutes prohibited conduct under university policy, responding to a disclosure, procedures for reporting and resolving reports of prohibited conduct, trauma-informed care, confidentiality, and other applicable policies and procedures. The training session will last for approximately 50 minutes, and the WebEx link will be sent to registrants within 24 hrs of the training time. Mandatory Annual Title IX Student Training
UMBC is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the campus community and is committed to maintaining a campus environment that is free from sex discrimination, including both sexual and gender-based harassment and violence. New Book By Manas Gaur: Knowledge-Infused Learning: Neurosymbolic AI for Explainability, Interpretability, and Safety
UMBC CSEE professor Manas Gaur has a new book co-authored with professor Amit Sheth from the University of South Carolina. The book is being published by Cambridge University Press and covers their work on developing neurosymbolic AI for explainability, interpretability, and safety. Both digital and hard-copy versions will be available early this spring. Here's the description from the publisher's site.
Knowledge-infused learning directly confronts the opacity of current 'black-box' AI models by combining data-driven machine learning techniques with the structured insights of symbolic AI. This guidebook introduces the pioneering techniques of neurosymbolic AI, which blends statistical models with symbolic knowledge to make AI safer and user-explainable. This is critical in high-stakes AI applications in healthcare, law, finance, and crisis management.
The book brings readers up to speed on advancements in statistical AI, including transformer models such as BERT and GPT, and provides a comprehensive overview of weakly supervised, distantly supervised, and unsupervised learning methods alongside their knowledge-enhanced variants. Other topics include active learning, zero-shot learning, and model fusion. Beyond theory, the book presents practical considerations and applications of neurosymbolic AI in conversational systems, mental health, crisis management systems, and social and behavioral sciences, making it a pragmatic reference for AI system designers in academia and industry.
