We hope all is well. We are writing to share a Summer opportunity with you pertaining to students interested in learning more about public health. The Columbia University- Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) is a 10-11 week program designed for students to receive public health training and exposure. 

• Components include (but are not limited to): Introductory didactic course training, Internship placement, Networking, Public Health Lectures across various disciplines, Professional Presentations, and more..
• Amenities include (but are not limited to): Housing coverage in NYC for the during of the program, Transportation coverage around NYC, Round trip flight(s) for various programming, and more..

This is a notification that the paycheck issued today, Friday, January 2, 2026, will have no deductions for the following State of Maryland benefits, due to the normally scheduled State Health Benefits premium deduction holiday schedule for Regular employees:

• Medical
• Prescription
• Dental
• State of Maryland MetLife Term Life insurance
• MetLife Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance
• Healthcare FSA and Dependent Care FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts)

This premium deduction holiday does not apply to University System of Maryland (USM) MetLife deductions for Long Term Disability (LTD) and/or Optional Term Life insurance coverages.

Employee contributions to their supplemental retirement accounts (SRA) are not impacted by the premium deduction holidays, so the SRA contributions will occur per usual on the January 2, 2026 paycheck.

Health Benefits deduction holidays for Regular State of Maryland employees typically occur twice a year. This is the last anticipated deduction holiday.

Promotions have begun for the 2026 University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarships, which recognize outstanding undergraduate and graduate students across USM institutions. This is a self-nomination scholarship. While the application portal opens on Tuesday, January 6, students are encouraged to review the requirements and begin preparing materials in advance.

Application Deadline: Friday, February 6

Requirements: Completed application, including a letter of recommendation
Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate USM students in good academic and disciplinary standing
