UMBC Procurement & Strategic Sourcing Hosts First Vendor Expo
The Department of Procurement and Strategic Sourcing was proud to host UMBC’s first Vendor Expo, and it was a wonderful success!
This event showcased our current contracted vendors, State of Maryland preferred vendors, as well as a diverse range of Minority- and Small-Business partners. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect vendors with the UMBC community and highlight the wide variety of products and services available to support our campus.
We were excited to welcome approximately 100 UMBC faculty and staff who joined us for the day. Below are a few photos capturing the energy of the event.

We look forward to continuing this type of vendor community engagement to strengthen partnerships, expand opportunities for diverse suppliers, and better serve the needs of the UMBC community.

Houbing Song webinar: Neuro-Symbolic AI: the Third Wave of AI

UMBC professor Houbing Song and PhD student Safayat Bin Hakim will give a free online webinar on Neuro-symbolic AI: The Third Wave of AI, at 8:00am EDT on Thursday, 26 September 2025. The webinar is part of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Young Professionals Society "Inspire the Next Generation with IEEE IES SYP Forum and Webinar Series".
There are three waves of Artificial Intelligence. The first Wave of AI is Crafted Knowledge, which includes rule-based AI systems. The second wave of AI is Statistical Learning, which includes machines becoming intelligent by using statistical methods. The third wave of AI is contextual adaptation. In the third wave, instead of learning from data, intelligent machines will understand and perceive the world on its own, and learn by understanding the world and reason with it. Neuro-symbolic AI, which combines neural networks with symbolic representations, has emerged as a promising solution of the third wave of AI. In this talk, first Houbing Herbert Song will share his journey from counter-unmanned aircraft systems to explainable AI to neuro-symbolic AI. Then he will present the past, present, and future of neuro-symbolic AI. Prof. Song will also share his perspective on the emerging area of neuro-symbolic AI.

Looking Forward with CARAT
New Services, Tools, and Resources Coming Soon
As we enter the new academic year, CARAT is looking forward to providing dedicated research development and award management for CAHSS, and to do so with a responsiveness to the shifting needs and challenges facing our departments, centers, and faculty. We take pride in helping to support the work that you’ve done, the work you continue to do, and the no-doubt vital work you will do in the future.
CARAT has some exciting things happening this year that will bolster this assistance, with new programming, services, and tools to help CAHSS faculty and centers to more successfully navigate the current funding landscape and its demands.
To that end, alongside some much-needed vacation time, CARAT spent the summer forming two internal task forces to create and modify our processes and resources for better pre- and post-award services. The first task force is focused on enhancing our pre-award activities, and the second on bolstering our post-award resources and support.
Here’s some of what we’re working on:
Pre-Award Plans:
-
Increased CARAT office hours (online and in-person) for consultations about funding streams, grant program fit and feasibility, and strategies for advancing projects and research;
-
Targeted funder/opportunity lists for specific faculty research and disciplines;
-
Training sessions for grant writing, award management, and navigating the shifting funding landscape;
-
CARAT Orientations for faculty;
-
Outreach to Departments and Centers to provide both CARAT overviews as well as information related to the specific needs of the fields involved;
-
Webinars dealing responsively with new funding streams and field developments, compliance and award management, and case studies of funded projects;
-
New resources and timelines for submitting a proposal.
Post-Award Plans:
- The creation of a new toolkit for awardees that includes a checklist for action items, submission timelines, and detailed instructions for managing your award;
-
Pre-award kickoff meetings that address important dates for reporting, budgeting, and compliance, as well as walkthroughs of grant management procedures, timelines, and instructions on how to use Kuali and the ticketing system;
- Targeted, subject-specific tutorial videos for FAQs pertaining to award management, budgets, reporting, and other related items.
The team at CARAT is eager to share the products of this work with the CAHSS community, and we plan to launch several of these efforts this Fall.

Seeking a room/ roomate
Hi everyone! I’m a UMBC student looking to rent a room really close to campus since I don’t drive. My budget is $550–$650/month with utilities included. Ideally, the place would be walkable to UMBC or on the shuttle line. I am also open to finding a roommate to share an apartment. I currently have a lead on a 3-bedroom apartment about 12 minutes from campus, so if you’re also looking, we could team up on that. I plan on moving by the last week of September.
