Update on the Campus Entrance Project - December 2014

We are pleased to announce we have reached several milestones in our campus entrance construction project.

Beginning the week of December 22, the new Administration Garage East Lot will open. The new lot, comprised of approximately 60 spaces, is accessed through the gated garage entrance. The new ramp to the top of the garage, located on the east side, as well as the pick-up and drop-off circle for the RAC will also open next week.

As work on the campus entrance project transitions to Administration Drive and the surrounding areas, several changes to vehicle and pedestrian patterns will occur throughout the winter session, extending into spring 2015.

Administration Drive will no longer act as a thoroughfare. The drive will only offer access to Admin Garage and the RAC drop-off circle.

Several bays on both levels of the west end of the Admin Garage will be closed to parking as we prepare for demolition. The original upper level garage entrance near the campus plaza will close, as well.

ADA accessible garage parking will be relocated to the lower level, and an accessible route to campus will be provided.

The west end of Administration Drive will be open to service vehicles and deliveries only.

Please view our construction map for more details about these changes.

Work on UMBC Blvd. and Hilltop Circle will continue throughout the winter session, with changes anticipated prior to the spring semester. More information will be provided at that time.

As always, we encourage you to visit the Campus Entrance website and join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction on this project may impact you.

The project seeks to change how computer science is taught by high school teachers. Researchers work together with high school teachers to craft new curricula for high school computer science programs. This project is unique in that actual high school teachers are creating the new curricula, rather than professional curriculum writers. The CS10K Maryland Project team includes faculty from UMCP, as well as high school teachers from Charles County and Baltimore County. The CS10K team has facilitated the creation of “a complete curriculum package for a new College Board …

DOCTOR for BBN LISP, circa 1966

Jeff Shager’s Genealogy of Eliza project has added a BBN LISP version of DOCTOR from 1966 that was recovered from a paper tape. Eliza is the classic conversational program written by Joseph Weizenbaum and and described in a 1966 CACM paper, “ELIZA–a computer program for the study of natural language communication between man and machine“. Weizenbaum wrote Eliza in his Lisp-like SLIP programming language, which ran on an IBM 7094 computer.

BBNer Bernie Cosell wrote this first Lisp version in BBN LISP and based it on the description and examples he read in the CACM paper. The recovered code is in Jeff’s github repository and an emulator that can run it is promised soon.

This is probably pretty close to the MACLISP version of DOCTOR that I played with in the early 1970s. I still have some DECtapes with old files from those days — maybe I’ll find that version of DOCTOR on one of them.
