Self-Care and Social Justice in the Wake of Recent Events

Self-Care and Social Justice in the Wake of Recent Events

To the UMBC Student Community,

The recent events related to the cases of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and others across the country have left many of us with questions, concerns, and reactions about difficult topics, such as racism, systemic discrimination, oppression, guns, policing, violence, protests, riots, social justice and more. These incidents remind us that, as a country, we continue to struggle for justice and equality. We want to applaud UMBC students for making their voices heard. It is only through coming together to exchange ideas, listening to each other, and working through feelings that we learn, and with this learning develop new visions for what we and our nation can become.

To our students, please know that the Counseling Center staff stands with you during this difficult time. We recognize that you might be experiencing a variety of emotions including anger, disillusionment, extreme disappointment, anxiety, confusion, guilt, and fear. For many, these recent experiences highlight the deep-rooted oppression of Black men, people of color, and other minorities in our country and heighten longstanding anger and pain regarding the lack of justice and equality.

Given the importance of this issue, it is “normal” and expected that we might be experiencing a wide range of emotions at an already stressful academic time. In addition, our reactions may or may not be similar to the people around us, which can lead to a sense of feeling unsafe, isolated, or misunderstood. We at the Counseling Center encourage everyone to be aware that such intense feelings can and often do cause additional physical and mental strain. In the next few days and weeks, we may feel more fatigued and have difficulty concentrating, sleeping, and eating normally. Some of us may find ourselves crying, getting angry more easily, or withdrawing from others.

At stressful times, expressing our concerns with others in a safe, comfortable environment can be helpful, as can spending time with friends, family, colleagues, or others who are willing/able to listen. If you need someone to talk to, you can contact the Counseling Center at 410-455-2472, the Mosaic Center at 410-455-2686 the UMBC Women’s Center at 410-455-7014 and off campus and on campus spiritual resources.

Researcher of the Week: Nickolette Hanzigiannis

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Nickolette,

She is a Psychology major and a URA Scholar. She is the currently President of the UMBC Equestrian Club and an active member of their IHSA Show team. Nickolette encourages all future researchers to find a mentor and get started, the experience alone is rewarding.

How did you find your mentor for your research project?

I had previously worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in Dr. Charissa Cheah’s Culture, Child, and Adolescent Development Laboratory for two semesters before conducting this project.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

While exploring parent-child interactions, I decided that I would like to focus on how parents express warmth towards their young children and how these expressions may vary cross-culturally.

Is this your first independent research project?

Yes, this is the first research project of my own.

Do you get course credit for this work?

I received course credit for this work by registering for PSYC 397 and 490.

How much time do you put into it?

I can not put a number on the time I am currently spending working on my project. Research builds on itself. I am constantly finding new literature to familiarize myself with and new tasks to complete to keep my project moving along. If you are interested and passionate about your research topic, you find yourself not counting the time spent working on it.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

My mentor, Charissa Cheah, suggested that I apply for an Undergraduate Research Award. Several students in my lab were current URA scholars at the time, so I also asked them about their experiences.

Was the application difficult to do?

The application was very straightforward with detailed directions about the requirements. The most difficult part was consolidating all of my thoughts into the space allotted.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

Being an expert in cross-cultural developmental psychology, Dr. Cheah was extremely helpful in suggesting ideas to further explore and in helping me articulate my thoughts.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

Thus far I would say the most challenging part is consolidating the facts while I am writing about my topic. The way parents express warmth can vary greatly and so can the measurements used to capture the construct of warmth. There are endless things I can mention, but I have to continuously redirect myself to be concise and clear.

What was the most unexpected thing?

The most unexpected thing is how different conducting your own research is than anything you do in any other class. It is obviously much more intensive when you have to apply the concepts you have learned.

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

Even though this work is different, I am grateful that I took PSYC 331 and 332. I feel that the Psychology major at UMBC has familiarized me with all the concepts I need to know ranging from knowledge of statistics and SPSS software to the differences between academic writing versus professional writing.

What else are you involved in on campus?

I am currently President of the UMBC Equestrian Club and an active member of their IHSA Show team!

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Find a mentor and get started! I feel that a lot of students are afraid of the workload, but what they do not think about is that they are formulating the research questions around topics they are interested in. You become very invested in your work and it can be a lot of fun.

What are your career goals?

I plan to apply to School Psychology programs in Fall 2014.

Read her abstract here...

Student Scholarship Q&A: Danielle Bouchard, social work

Every so often, we highlight the importance of student scholarships by introducing you to the very students they help to succeed. Today, we’re featuring Danielle Bouchard ‘15, social work, who is an Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship recipient.

Name: Danielle Bouchard
Major: Social work and print media minor
Extra Curricular Activities: NASW Member, BSW Representative for NASW, Meals on Wheels Volunteer, President of the Social Work Student Association, Vice President of Phi Alpha Honor Society, and avid rock climber.
Scholarship received: Alumni Association Scholarship

Q: Why did you decide to attend UMBC?
I wanted to attend an institution that provided opportunities for research, had a diverse student population, and was in close proximity to Washington, D.C. I was also drawn to UMBC because of the reputation of its social work program.

Q: What’s been the most amazing discovery you’ve made so far as a student here?
I am able to interact and study with students from an array of different ethnicities, races, and cultures. I am able to have intellectual conversations with students who have opposing views on topics discussed in and outside of class.

Q: Tell us about a class or club that has really opened your mind.
My first semester at UMBC I enrolled in SOWK 200 taught by Dr. Guzman-Rae. She opened my mind to the vastness and versatility of a social work degree. I was introduced to the various types of roles social workers can play: macro, mezzo, and micro. We can be brokers, advocates, counselors, educators, facilitators, or a combination of them all.

Q: How important is it to you as a student to get scholarship support?
If I did not receive any scholarship support, I would have had to postpone attending school full-time and have work another job to offset the expenses of attending school. It is extremely important to me to receive these scholarships so I can focus on my education and my long-term career goals. In addition, without the Gilman Scholarship I would not have the resources to study abroad in Ecuador and Peru this past term.

Q: What are you most proud of accomplishing in your time at UMBC?
My involvement in the Social Work Student Association. A couple students and I reignited SWSA by increasing membership and providing monthly opportunities for all students to become involved on and off campus helping other individuals within the community.

Q: What would you say to the people who provided your scholarship?
I have been fortunate enough to meet with two of the donors of my scholarships and will hopefully meet with the third within the coming months. I expressed my gratitude for their generous donation and explained how the scholarship has helped me further my education.

Q: What do you hope to do after graduation?
I hope to be accepted into the William J. Clinton Fellowship for Service in India. I want to work with victims of human trafficking in rural areas of India. After the program, I hope to attend UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy and School of Social Welfare.

Marie desJardins Collaborates with Howard County Parents and Teachers for HowGirlsCode

CSEE’s Marie desJardins recently collaborated with a group of Howard County parents and teachers to create HowGirlsCode, an educational program that “educates and inspires young girls to pursue computer related activities, courses, and careers.”

The program–originally called Computer Mania Club–is based out of Fulton Elementary School. Over the course of ten weeks, students meet for weekly two-hour sessions, working on projects such as Lego Mindstorm robots and 3D printing. Students also work with programming tools such as MIT’s Scratch program. The curriculum for the program is largely based off of materials from the Code.org website.

UMBC alumna Katie Egan and her husband Kent Malwitz have been instrumental in getting the club off the ground. Malwitz, who is the President and Chief Learning Officer for UMBC Training Centers, originally recruited Marie desJardins to participate in a brainstorming session for the club back in 2013. Professor desJardins now serves as a member of the Advisory Board for HowGirlsCode.

Bethany Meyer, Senior Web Developer at MGH, Inc., was a recent guest speaker for HowGirlsCode. During her presentation, Meyer explained how she got into coding, citing as an example a website that she created when she was 13 years old. Meyer went on to present more recent projects, such as OldBay75.com and OCOcean.com. “I think a lot of people have negative stereotypes in mind when they think of programmers,” Meyer says. “My goal was to break down some of those stereotypes by showing…[students] that the work can be really exciting and that it involves creativity and interacting with others. I hope that I inspired some of them to teach themselves to make websites. ”

A recent Baltimore Sun article notes that there has been a marked increase in student signups for HowGirlsCode since last year. More courses will be offered in the spring, due to increasing demand. At some point, the coding club could possibly expand to other schools. Currently, Egan is trying to turn HowGirlsCode into a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, charitable organization. This would allow the club to have better access to resources such as facilities, grants and funding. Ideally, she hopes to turn the club into a nonprofit by September 2015.

The Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Lab has a similar program, called Girls Who Code. The Hopkins APL program, which is intended for middle and high school students, is based on a national nonprofit of the same name.

This piece originally appeared on the CSEE Web site.

PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation is pleased to invite you to attend and participate in the 2015 University System of Maryland PROMISE AGEP Research Symposium and Professional Development Conference. This conference replaces the former PROMISE Research Symposium, and adds a professional development component that will prepare graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for faculty positions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM, which includes social sciences) disciplines. This conference seeks to provide a venue that will allow students to present their work at any stage, receive feedback in preparation for presenting at larger venues, and provide training that will prepare participants for faculty careers.
