PhD proposal: Omar Shehab, A quantum approach to the graph isomorphism and knot classification problems

PhD Dissertation Proposal

A quantum approach to the graph isomorphism
and knot classification problems

Omar Shehab

11:30am Monday, 08 December 2014, ITE 346

Simulating physics on a quantum computer can be reduced to solving mathematical problem using quantum mechanics. In this PhD dissertation proposal, I present two important mathematical problems to be investigated using quantum mechanical techniques. In the case of the first problem, the Graph Isomorphism problem, I, with another co-researcher, Kenneth M Zick, are able to present a quantum annealing algorithm with promising result. I am proposing to extend this idea so that we could study the Hamiltonian complexity of graph isomorphism. I propose to transform our previous work, the compact objective function, into a k-local Hamiltonian problem and investigate quantum adiabatic algorithms to solve it. In the case of the second problem, classification of knots, I present a mathematical framework with two restricted problems solved using quantum annealing. The restricted problems are defined for unknots embedded in two dimensional integer lattice. I propose to generalize them to higher dimension and complexity. I present how I envision to continue the rest of the study while writing the dissertation.

George La Noue, Public Policy and Political Science, Writes Op-Ed for The Chronicle of Higher Education

As many college athletic programs are preparing for the postseason and finishing fall regular season schedules, there has been an ongoing public discussion about the future of “mid-major” athletics. George La Noue, professor emeritus and research professor of public policy and political science, wrote an op-ed published in The Chronicle of Higher Education in which he analyzed the current state of mid-major athletic programs and discussed what he called their “muddled future.”

“While media attention is overwhelmingly focused on big-time intercollegiate athletics, a crisis is developing for most of the 351 Division I institutions that cannot afford to play at that level,” wrote La Noue.

La Noue discussed how the NCAA changed its governing structure this year to give more influence to 67 universities in the Power Five football conferences, which left the mid-major programs outside of those conferences to face financial challenges.

“Those colleges are now faced with substantially increasing their athletic expenditures to try to preserve the pretense of Division I status. The Power Five institutions have budgets of three, four, or even five times as much as that of most mid-majors. They also now have NCAA authority to offer enhanced ‘full cost’ multiyear financial-aid packages to their recruits. The current playing field is decidedly not level. Division I is an unhappy family. Institutional choices for the leftovers will not be easy.”

To read the full op-ed titled “The Muddled Future of Mid-Major Athletics,” click here.

Maurice Berger Awarded Grant from Creative Capital

Maurice Berger, research professor and chief curator of the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, has been awarded a $30,000 Arts Writers Grant from Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation.

The grant supports research for Berger’s monthly column, Race Stories, for the Lens Blog of The New York Times. The blog explores the relationship of photography to concepts, themes, and social or regional issues about race not usually covered in the mainstream media.

Berger plans to conduct research on Robert Frank, focusing on contact sheets, notes, and shooting scripts for a two-part essay on Frank’s representations of race in The Americans. He will also conduct research for essays exploring parallel developments in African American, Latino, and Asian American photo-based art and photography from the 1960s to the present, focusing on the ways this work has challenged stereotypes and prevailing ideas about identity. More about the award can be found here.

Designed to support writing about contemporary art, as well as to create a broader audience for arts writing, the Arts Writers Grant Program aims to strengthen the field as a whole and to ensure that critical writing remains a valued mode of engaging the visual arts.
