Your New Ride

You want a new car?

You’re a broke college kid, so, no doubt, you can’t afford a new car. So what if you could get a new car for free by…voting in the next election?

According to President Obama, you can do just that.

In a wide-ranging interview aired Sunday on ABC’s This Week, the President said that

“I think the American people, you know, they’re going to want that new car smell. You know, they want to drive something off that lot that doesn’t have as much mileage as me.”

It seems that the President believes his two terms have taken some of the luster off of his brand:

“When you’ve been president for six years, you know, you’ve got some dings.”

After the Democratic Party’s midterm drubbing, it’s not hard to see why the President feels this way. Facing Republican majorities in both houses of Congress, he is close to ‘lame duck’ territory–the portion of a president’s second term where his influence lags as people begin to look to the next presidential election.

Speaking about the next election, Obama reiterated his wish to see Democrats retain control of the White House:

“I am very interested in making sure that I’ve got a Democratic successor.”

Asked to speculate about Hillary Clinton’s seemingly inevitable presidential run:

“If she decides to run, I think she will be a formidable candidate and I think she’d be a great president.”

About helping Democrats win in 2016:

“I’m gonna do everything I can, obviously, to make sure that whoever the nominee is is successful.”

He’ll do everything he can except, of course, getting too close. He must be careful not to wipe the luster off the Democrats’ new 2016 ride.

Donald Norris, Public Policy, Writes Baltimore Sun Op-Ed

In advance of the UMBC public policy program 40th anniversary celebration, Donald Norris, professor and chair of the department, wrote an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun in which he defended the value of studying public policy to meet the growing demand for public servants who can improve government at all levels.

In the column, Norris discussed the strength of the UMBC public policy program in educating students to make a strong, local impact after graduation: “Over the past 40 years, the public policy graduate program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has grown from 12 master’s students to 135 doctoral and master’s students. One key to our success is the program’s focus on issues impacting the state,” Norris wrote.

“The UMBC public policy program welcomes students from many nations and many states, but the majority of our students are from Maryland, and the majority of our graduates remain in Maryland. Moreover, at a time when fewer and fewer college students say that they want to work in the public sector, more than half of UMBC’s public policy students who graduated in the last 10 years are employed by Maryland state and local government, federal agencies and nonprofits,” he added.

Norris was also quoted in two recent Baltimore Sun articles analyzing the clout of Maryland’s congressional delegation after the election and a failed loan repayment from Anthony Brown’s campaign. To read the column and articles, click below.

UMBC professors Bill Shewbridge (Media and Communication Studies) and Michelle Stefano (American Studies) are screening their film Mill Stories at the Society for Visual Anthropology (SVA) film festival. The screening will take place at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 6 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C. Below is a description of the film from the SVA Film Festival website:

Recently closed, the Sparrows Point Steel Mill in Baltimore, Maryland helped to shape the lives of hundreds of thousands of steelworkers and associated personnel for over 125 years. Mill Stories: Remembering Sparrows Point presents a collection of personal stories based on ethnographic interviews collected at the time on the mill’s final closing. The film seeks to amplify the voices of former workers as a means of helping to safeguard and promote the living heritage of the recently closed mill and its surrounding areas.

DPS Google+ Community

DPS IT has been researching Google+ Communities recently and we are interested in seeing if there might be some use for this platform in DPS. If you are not familiar Google+ it is Google's social networking platform and a Google+ Community is a place where a group of people can share ideas and hopefully have fruitful discussions. So similar to other social media tools you will be able to post statuses, comments and you can even vote "+1" to show your appreciation for posts! Here are examples of the questions/conversations that might take place in this community:

Does anyone know what rooms the LifeSize unit can operate in?

Did anybody see the game last night?

Does anyone know what the name of the UC copier/printer?

Here are some pics from the DPS Holiday Party.

Anybody interested in going to lunch today?

To be a member of The DPS Google+ Community is a voluntary option. The only requirement in order to be an eligible DPS Google+ Community member is you have to be a current member of the coed@lists.umbc.edu email list. If for some reason you are removed from the coed@lists.umbc.edu email list then you will be removed from the DPS Google+ Community. Also you have the option of leaving the community at any time you wish.

As far as privacy this is how we have setup the community:

Restricted community to our organization (UMBC)

Type of community: Private in your domain - Hide community from searches

Who can join: Only people in your organization who are invited

Who can see posts and members: Community members

Who can find community via search: Not shown in search results**

(This information was extracted from this link under the Community privacy options "If you restrict the community to your organization". Please see link for more detail and answers to your possible privacy concerns.)

So to be clear the original plan in trying the DPS Google+ Community is to increase communication upon DPS employees and to not take the place of any of the formal communication services DPS already has in place (i.e.coed@lists.umbc.edu). So if you are interested in communicating and sharing with your coworkers even more reply to this email that you want to join the DPS Google+ Community and we will add you in!!! Thanks for reading.
