2014 Idea Competition Recap & Winner Announcement

<Tagline>Great ideas & for the first time ever: A TIE FOR 1st PLACE!</Tagline>

The night began with a deep breath from David Verghese, the 2014 Idea Competition’s first presenter, as he stepped up on stage. eID was tackling the issue of having to juggle two campus id cards; one you use to pay for everything, the other to get you in your dorm. His cracked Red Card shows its use, and “how antiquated our current system is.”

Sai Kumar Popuri, a graduate student, has created a community driven mobile application that aims to solve some of the parking issues on campus. SPOK – Spot n Park depends on people to tag a spot as free as they are leaving. As users walk through the lots, they can give an overview if they are full or not.

Patrick Wheltle came on stage with an arsenal of medics to explain his Electronic Triage Tagging system. The current paper tagging method hasn’t changed in 40 years. His idea would help to identify injured people during a terrorist attack or natural disaster when there is a high need; when there are a high need to get people found, identified, and to the hospital as quickly and efficiently as possible. The electronic tags are reusable, and transmit a minimal amount of information about the patient (Gender, Est. Age, Treatment Level…nothing identifiable) about 30 feet. Each tag would operate on a mesh network, strengthening each tag's power and distance based on the number used.

Three guys in red ties, Edgar Nzokwe, Sory Kante, & Christopher Pagan, stepped up to the stage next. Their Android app, Flashbot, aims to help you to create, organize, and store your flashcards in the cloud. The application is easy to access, provides text to voice capabilities, and allows you to share or even sell your flashcards to members of the community. They are expecting to have the app ready for launch by the beginning of spring semester.

I don’t think anyone would argue that of all of our contestants, Noah Hutton, sprung on to stage with an energy and passion that was infectious. In contrast to the others, his idea, The Power of School Supplies, was very much a social project more than a business venture. As a student teacher at Digital Harbor High in Baltimore he identified that not every student has the supplies they need to excel. He is working on (and we’re going to help him) a collection drive for our, or other k-12 schools, unused or lightly used school materials. At the end of the semester, you have spiral books that you haven’t completely filled, binders that you may not need anymore, pencils and pens that you will just loose by spring semester, or a book bag that you’re just tired of. Instead of throwing all of this away, like many of us do, Noah wants to collect it, organize it, and donate it to schools in the city that may need it. A spiral notebook with 20 pages in it is better than not having one.

Indi– Exploration and Exercise, a mobile app created by Nitin Sampathi looks to combine your interests with exercise. You tell the system some things you love doing. It searches your area for that Pizza shop and
bookstore you want to find and spits out a map for you to do a 1, 3, 5…mile walk or bike ride with two stops along the way. If you don’t have a bike, no problem. The app finds bikesharing locations close by and tells you where to drop it off, if it’s a one way trip.

Having fought being sick all week, Eric Mundschenk came up on stage with vigor. When you came to college did you know what you wanted to major in? Do you have a clue what you want to be when you grow up? DegreeIQ aims to give you that path. Working backwards, it will help you evaluate and choose a career path. It will then provide you with recommended classes, notifications of networking opportunities surrounding your chosen field, as well as reminders of important dates (i.e. registration for graduation happens at the beginning of the semester you’re scheduled to graduate. It’s sneaky. Don’t say I didn't warn you.) Users are also given a ‘Career Buddy,’ which pairs you with a mentor in your field for you to intern with, learn from, and go to for personal advice.

Dan Armstrong and Matthew Berry are trying to solve some of the communication issues with college groups and want students to feel more of a connection with the campus. A mobile application that would put all of your social networks on one platform and allow group texting to members of your group.

Armed with a head of lettuce and two flats of salad greens, Andres Camacho confidently explained his idea about installing hoop houses, a type of greenhouse, on campus or nearby. True Greens would be a student focused group that looks to bring in different student groups and majors (in a very Interdisciplinary Studies, Camacho’s major, method). Engineering students could help to build the houses. Environmental Scientist can help with soil testing. He wants True Greens to be able to supply True Grits with nutritious vegetables that we can slather in ranch dressing. The microgreens could also be sold in a farmer’s market fashion, or a CSA model, to students and faculty/staff.

This was the first year in which we had no women enter the competition. Sarah Miller, a member of True Greens, was the only female even listed. This was something a number of audience members and the judges noticed. Women, keep that in mind…next year we want to hear your ideas too!

Nearly 200 students turned out to the event and cast their votes. I can tell you, each vote really can make a difference!

For the first time in Idea Competition history, we had a tie for first place. It was down to the last vote. But, here were the results.

Campus Help System (RT) hits new milestone

UMBC uses an open source system called Request Tracker (RT) from a company named BestPractical to provide help to the UMBC campus community at large. In fact UMBC has been recognized on the BestPractical website as one of their many success stories citing an August 2013 Educause Online Review article called Beyond the IT Help Desk.

On Tue Nov 11, 2014 14:11:24 RT received its 500,000th ticket since going live Feb 23, 2009.

In this time RT has grown from a DoIT centric Help System to a campus wide system serving 25+ areas on campus, and growing. RT has also expanded from a typical trouble ticket system to also include service type request for both internal and external operations across many areas of campus.

As of Nov 12, 2014 RT has recorded 94,934 tickets for the 2014 calendar year.

The acceptance of RT as a mechanism to provide a common support has created increased interest by many of our higher educations peers and this is a tribute to the 'UMBC way' as many of our peers have stated how fortunate we are to have such broad collaborations.

RT has also been nicely complemented by our FAQ system (umbc.edu/faq) to allow the community to try and solve their own issues, especially in off hours.

Our latest members to adopt RT for managing their back office support include Procurement and Student Affairs Business Service Center.

We are also working with the CNMS Business Service Center, the PAHB operations staff, and the MME Technical Center.

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone involved with RT for the continued support and feedback.

Joe Kirby

UMBC: Home Field Advantage

Home Field Advantage

Energized by Retriever fans, Mens Soccer prepares for America East championship game.

On November 15, the UMBC mens soccer team will host Hartford for the America East Conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. A victory would mark UMBCs fourth invitation to the NCAA Tournament in five years, and Coach Pete Caringis crew would become just the second program in America East history to win the leagues regular season and tournament titles in back-to-back seasons.

The excitement on campus is palpable. Fans fill Retriever Soccer Park for home games and stadiums on the road. UMBC mens soccer consistently ranks among the top 25 NCAA Division I teams in home game attendance.

The crowd exploded during UMBCs November 12 America East semifinal tournament game against Vermont when forward Kay Banjo, the leagues Striker of the Year, broke a 1-1 deadlock with a phenomenal back-heel goal. Banjos story exemplifies the impact fans have on the game how the support our student-athletes feel from the UMBC community makes a difference for them on the field.

Faced with the elimination of Towsons mens soccer program in 2013, Banjo 15, media and communication studies, had to decide how to use his final year of collegiate eligibility. Considering his options, he remembered the fan support he saw at Retriever Soccer Park when he attended a contest there in 2013, and this year he is competing for the Retrievers. UMBC, he told The Baltimore Sun, fits like a glove.

At the core of Retriever Fever is Lot 17, named for the old moniker of the Stadium Lot, where fans have historically gathered before and after the games. Lot 17 members make their presence known with gold t-shirts, chants, flags, a beating drum, and unbridled enthusiasm for UMBC.

Lot 17 President Zach Trout 15, business technology administration, is plugged into the countrys rapidly growing passion for soccer. He shares, My main goal is to grow Lot 17 so future students can experience the feeling of attending a professional soccer game right here at UMBC.

For Retriever fan Margaret Glassman 16, management of aging services, Lot 17 is about making lifelong friends and memories. She says, It was great to find a group of people that love watching soccer as much as I do, and I think it definitely gives UMBC a home field advantage.

Ben Alkon 16, history, agrees, saying, UMBC has a diverse student body culturally as well as socially. If theres something a student likes to do, Id bet there are other students at UMBC with the same passion. For Alkon, that group is Lot 17.

Athletic Director Tim Hall invites everyone in the UMBC community to attend the America East Conference Championship game on Saturday, November 15, 7 p.m. at the Retriever Soccer Park. The first 100 students with UMBC ID will be
admitted free.

From experience I know for a fact that fans give the team a home field advantage, says Lot 17s Trout. I want to make sure any away team knows this is UMBC and they are in our house.

For tickets and more information, visit www.umbcretrievers.com. The game will also stream live online
at www.umbcretrievers.tv.

(11/13/2014)

Invitation open to all LLC Doctoral Students! (LLC GSO)

<Tagline>Socializing, studying, and getting to know each other</Tagline>

Folks,

It's time we all got together to socialize outside of our classrooms, to celebrate life. For this purpose, your favorite GSO on the planet, the LLC GSO, has planned two exciting events in the coming days.

The first is a dinner where we will welcome our new cohort, and socialize, while devouring some great food.

The second event is a beautiful combination of a study session and fun. If you are working on some project/dissertation and would like to work with peers, mark this day. Even if you don't wish to work during this time, you can just drop by any time for the amazing snacks we'd be sharing. It will be snack and work paradise there.

Event 1: LLC Social

    Venue: True Grit's restaurant [UMBC]
