How to Write a Personal Statement for Summer Research

Personal statements are often required to apply for research internships and graduate schools. Personal statements ask you to highlight your goals and interests.

It can be difficult to talk about yourself this way, but here are some tips:

The Purpose of a Personal Statement

Share your interests and enthusiasm for the specific work you are applying to do.

Demonstrate what you can contribute to the program to which you are applying

To state the specific lab/program you want to work in and why

To state your professional goals and what or how you hope to contribute to the program

First Steps

Read the personal statement question carefully and analyze what it is asking for.

Visualize your audience: will this be read by a scientist? An administrator? A physician?

The Basics

Recite your research interests as they relate to the work you are applying for

Write your year of study, major, related academic and career goals, and impressive academic credentials

Experience in the Field

Mention any special connections to the work such as prior experience or family background (i.e. Name drop)

Write something unique about your research interests or an idea that fuels your own research interests

Your Proposed Contributions to the Program

List personal qualities and demonstrate these through examples

State what you can do for them and what you seek to gain from the opportunity

Explain how the work fits into your academic and research goals.

The above mentioned tips are great to include in your personal statement. Here are some tips on writing and mechanics to make your personal statement strong.

Saying “I am” is more powerful than saying “I have always been.”

Make positive statements. “I have experience in…” not “I don’t have experience in x, but do have…”

Craft clear, engaging opening and closing sentences.

Check that your opening statement is supported in the body and is consistent with your closing.

Organize the statement so it flows from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph.

Proofread for grammar, spelling, paragraph breaks, and correct punctuation.

When you have finished drafting your statement, ask yourself:

Does this statement show my interests in the specific program or is it generic?

Does this statement describe me specifically or could any good student in my field use this?

Some common mistakes to avoid:

Restating the question/topic or rewriting your resume or transcript

Clichés such as “to make the world a better place” instead, explain how such a lofty goal will be achieved

Providing unrelated information

Any background earlier than high school.

Personal statements can be difficult, but at the career center we can help you so that your personal statement is professional and effective. Set up an appointment through UMBCworks, by stopping by our office on the second floor of Math/Psych, or by calling 410-455-2216.

Bb Achievements to Support Competency Based Learning

<Tagline>Use badges to motivate & reward students via gamification</Tagline>

As announced earlier this semester, Winter and Spring 2015 courses will be hosted by Blackboard directly instead of by DoIT. As part of this change, we will also upgrade to the Spring 2014 version of the software, which provides several new features.

In this migration update, we'll highlight the new Achievements tool.

What are Achievements?

If you have watched anyone playing a video game, you know how the digital universe motivates people. Faculty can also motivate students in the upcoming Blackboard with a form of "gamification" by incorporating badges into their courses. With the Blackboard achievements tool, faculty can provide this kind of incentive by designing a badge system to encourage students to explore and participate more.

A student's badge collection can represent the key learning milestones that he or she met. Earned badges can show a complete view of a person’s skills and achievements.

Being rewarded is also a powerful extrinsic motivator. One of the best rewards is recognition for a job well done. Finally, providing these opportunities for rewarding students throughout a course can create a map of what they can learn.

UMaine to research ‘trashanol’

By Buck Johnson

Posted on Nov. 03, 2014, at 12:46 a.m.

The Municipal Review Committee (MRC) is partnering with the University of Maine to research an energy solution which involves turning garbage into energy known as “Trashanol.”

The MRC is a non-profit organization which leads the trash disposal interests of over 180 communities in Penobscot County and surrounding areas. The group’s trash is currently disposed by the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company (PERC). The PERC operates a waste-to-energy plant in Orrington and is part owned by the MRC.

The PERC plant presently burns the majority of waste collected in the area. This burning creates energy which is used by Emera Maine as part of a three decade long contract between the two companies. Currently, the contract is favorable to PERC as it receives $0.16 for every kilowatt hour it produces. Once the contract ends in 2018 this rate is expected to drop to between$0.04-$0.06 per kilowatt hour. For the past five years the MRC has been searching for an alternate source of energy in anticipation of the impending contract coming to an end.

The MRC has agreed to spend $20,000 to employ the University of Maine’s Forest Bioproducts Research Institute to study the garbage-to-energy known as Fiberight. Fiberight has approached the MRC about establishing a plant in the Penobscot region which would turn garbage into energy, but in a different, more profitable way than is currently being performed by the PERC.

Fiberight Chief Executive Craig Stuart-Paul spoke with the Orono Town Council in July about his company’s unique waste disposal methods.

“We have an organic solution — rather than burning [waste] … let’s come up with a solution that deals with the organics first and then another way to deal with the recyclables,” Stuart-Paul said.

Traditionally, all organic matter in trash in either burned or place into landfills. Fiberight, however, plans to use enzyme technology to turn the organic materials into engineered fuels. Fiberight operates a demonstration plant in Lawrenceville, Virginia that is used to turn municipal solid waste into ethanol, biogas or compressed natural gas. The company created and copyrighted the term Trashanol for their fuel products.

Orono town manager, Sophie Wilson, expressed desire to have students from the University of Maine assist in researching Fiberight’s procedures.

“We are looking forward to the findings from the study that MRC just executed a contract with UMaine to complete. At this point we are in the beginning stages of confirming the technology, but are excited at the prospect of what appears to be a sustainable, affordable, and environmentally friendly method to manage municipal solid waste,” Wilson said.

Greg Lounder, the executive director of MRC, stated that professor Hemant Pendse of the University’s Forest Bioproducts Research Institute has been tasked with leading the study of Fiberight.

“Pendse has assembled a project team with expertise in industrial development and process, techno-economic analysis, enzymatic hydrolysis and microbial fermentation,” Lounder remarked.

The study has been planned to start this week, and the MRC has requested that the final report be available before their annual meeting in January.

Several goals of the study will be to determine if the Trashanol process will be able to operate effectively in the colder Maine climate, whether it will comply with the Department of Environmental Protection’s regulations and the minimal tonnage required to make the potential plant in Maine profitable. Board members of the MRC have also inquired as to whether the company could produce salt from the waste which could be used on the roads in the winter.

Similar technology was being used by Old Town Fuel and Fiber, before its closing in August, by turning wood into cellulosic sugars. The cellulosic sugars can be used for many chemical-based products and plastics.

However, not all of the municipal solid waste would be used for the creation of fuel products. Recyclables such as plastic, paper, glass and metal could be removed and sold.

“Milk jugs are selling at $1,000 per ton. Plastic bags, virgin polyethylenes, is selling for $660 a ton — why would I burn that?” Stuart-Paul explained.

If the study of the Maryland-based company proves advantageous to the MRC it could be a welcomed sigh of relief for the area. The likely termination of the PERC-Emera Maine contract in 2018 could potentially lead to municipal waste disposal complications as PERC may raise their rates for processing waste from the MRC communities.

It has also been discussed about possibly using portions of the Old Town Fuel and Fiber plant for the fuel processing portion of the MRC’s plan.

Sophie Wilson added that the potential new waste processing operation could lead to several new jobs in the area which has felt the pain of two large mills closing this year.

She explained, “Initial review indicates that, if constructed, this project would generate a number of jobs — both semi and highly skilled positions.”

Stay Healthy!

There is NO fun in being sick, especially while you’re in college. In general, college students are very busy people with extremely stressful schedules. While I was in college, I played two varsity sports; I was involved in over five clubs and the president of two campus organizations. On top of all of this, I also had to balance a part time job as well. At some point in college, you may feel stressed out or burned out, and this can eventually cause you to get sick. It has happened to me time and time again: I overwork myself and end up with headaches and an awful cold.

I made a vow to myself that I would do all that I can to prevent myself from stress, burnout, and getting sick. Here is a list of five important tips to help you stay healthy in college.

1.) WORK OUT!

I’m an extremely active person. I love running, playing basketball, lifting weights and anything else that can get me moving. However, with such busy schedules, working out is usually the first thing a college student will cut out. I was fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it LOL) to have had mandatory basketball practices each morning at 5:00AM and 4:30PM so I was always in great shape. Now that I have graduated from college, I still make time to work out. In an attempt to maintain my health and shape, I schedule specific days during the week to work out in some way. Whether it means just going to lift weights on my own or running two miles in the fitness center or going to play pick up ball at LA fitness. I always make time and I want to encourage you to do the same as you all approach your freshman year of college. Find something that you love to do that keeps you active! It will help you stay healthy AND relieve stress.

If He can work out, then you can too:

:

2.)CREATE A BALANCED DIET!

Your diet is a great way to ensure that you are staying healthy in college. It’s so easy and convenient to pick up chick-fil-a (I must confess, I am downright guilty of this) or to have a few of the palatable cookies from the cafeteria as well. If you begin to start thinking more about eating healthier foods, then you will be less likely to become sick. You can do this by incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet. The next trip that you make to the grocery store can be the beginning of your commitment to healthier foods. Try to substitute some of the junk food purchases with apples or carrots. Try to purchase cereal bars, or mixed bags of nuts and fruits. Not only are they healthy, but they are very convenient to grab on the way out the door. It’s also a great idea to substitute a couple of those cans of soda or coffee with water. Decreasing your caffeine intake will help you sleep better at night! TRY IT OUT!

DONT BE THIS GUY:

:

3.) CATCH SOME Z’s!

I am very talented in the art of sleeping. In fact, I may enjoy sleeping a tad bit more than I should (LOL) but then again, who doesn’t enjoy a nice night of counting sheep. My teammates and friends in college would always make fun of me for going to bed early. I would usually be in bed by 9:30p.m. or 10:00p.m. each night, especially the day before a test or exam. A lot of times, I would stay up later to study or complete homework, but I always try to manage to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Every person’s body is different; some people can work off of less sleep than others. Listen to your body and give it the right amount of sleep. Sleeping enough at night helps you remember the information you retained during the day. So, do your best to get enough sleep when you can.

DONT BE THIS GUY

:

4.) DESTRESS!

Some may like yoga, some like to vibe to music, and some chose other activities that reduce stress. My outlets to relax and relieve stress in college were Netflix, NBA2K, and listening to music. A good Netflix movie was a great way for me to relax after a long week of work, practice, games, and tests. I would play my teammates and friends in NBA2k and this was a great way for us to relax. My stress relievers are not going to be the answers to everyone’s problems, but the point is that you need to find your “happy place” to go to when the weight of being college students is lying on your shoulders. You could try Zumba, running, skating, or anything that will allow you to refresh and calm down. A stress-free life starts with staying healthy!

What’s your stress releiver going to be?

We’re Losing the War!!

Humans of the earth:

There have been some setbacks in our war against nature.

While we have won some battles, like those against the passenger pigeon or the once mighty Tasmanian tiger, many more need to be fought.

But thanks to those ridiculous other humans who insist on caring about animals, we have recently lost ground. Witness the following examples:

1. On the island of Española, in the Galapagos, giant tortoises resurged from a minimum of fifteen individuals in the 1960s to more than one thousand today.

What’s more, after years of captive breeding and reintroduction programs, the population appears to be reproducing on its own.

2. Further north, the blue whale population off the coast of California rebounded to pre-whaling numbers. (However, this statistic comes with a pretty big caveat: globally, blue whale numbers are still around five to ten percent of historic levels.)

3. Finally, American gray wolves may have reached the ultimate tourist destination: the Grand Canyon.

If confirmed, this would represent the first wolf sighting in the area since the 1940s, and a huge step for a species that was extinct in the Western United States as little as twenty years ago.

Terrifying, isn’t it? Don’t worry too much. We still appear to be in the midst of the sixth mass extinction in the history of the earth. Nature will yet be annihilated!

Unless those silly conservationists have their say.

The Debate of Death with Dignity

The circumstances surrounding her death are devastating, and have stirred a nationwide response.

This spring, 29-year-old Brittany was diagnosed with a form of terminal brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme.

In April, Brittany’s oncologist told her she had six months to live. Using Oregon’s Death with Dignity Law, Brittany made a plan to end her life surrounded by friends and family including her new husband.

The Death With Dignity law required Brittany to administer the drugs herself as prescribed by her physician. Alan Meisel, a bioethicist at the University of Pittsburgh, states this policy as “buying an insurance policy against a miserable death”. Read Brittany’s personal essay on CNN here.

While the laws and decisions are controversial, everyone deserve a painless death. Share your thoughts below.
