Darwin and the Pope – BFFs?

Surely not. The Pope and Darwin would probably never be BFFs.

But if Darwin were alive, the two might respect each other. The Pope said yup to evolution and the big bang theory. Sounds huge. It’s important to ask – are his words really revolutionary?

Amidst the praise and talk of his progressive statements, a few sources have reminded us that the Catholic Church hasn’t objected to evolution since 1950. In 1996, Pope John Paul II stated evolution was “more than a hypothesis.”

Nevertheless, Pope Francis’ comments that God is not a “magician” seem to stand out. Even though he restated that “evolution is not inconsistent with creation,” this Pope seems to have a way of phrasing things in a strong way that attract our ears.

If he didn’t say anything revolutionary, he reaffirmed something that many may have forgotten: it’s not about choosing science over religion or vice versa. The two don’t have to contradict each other.

So what’s next? The establishment that has been behind teaching creationism in schools isn’t Catholic, but maybe the Pope’s comments could be another nail in the coffin for the whole “public-schools-denying-evolution” thing.

As Darwin said,

“In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.”

The Catholic Church seems to get it.

Kate Drabinski: Field Tripping, Getting Historic

I have one of those sweet day jobs where I don’t generally have to be anywhere on Fridays. I schedule all the stuff of life outside the workplace in that day—dentist appointments, therapy, trips to the aquarium to avoid the stickiness of that place on the weekends—but sometimes that pesky work thing shoves itself in my Friday face. That’s what happened a couple Fridays ago when I had to be at the Maryland Historical Society by 8:30 a.m.—ungodly, if you ask me.

UMBC Horror Story: the Online Window

<Tagline>A spooky tale about Placement Testing</Tagline>

"It was a crisp fall night, and all was quiet at UMBC. The sun had traveled the full span of the sky, and the far off stars twinkled dimly in the jet black sky. Johnny, a restless UMBC junior was sitting in his darkened dorm room, transfixed by the pale glow of his laptop screen. It was a Saturday night, his dorm mates had all left for the weekend, and yet, he couldn't relax. He had completed his all of his homework for the week, prepped for his upcoming Orgo exam, and even started his paper for HIST 387. But something didn't feel quite right...despite how ahead Johnny was for the current semester, he couldn't shake this gnawing feeling. He decided to go for a walk. The campus was silent as he crossed Erickson field, but the peace didn't help. He began to grow more nervous as he walked past the Commons. As he rounded the corner of the Commons garage, it hit him! Something lurched out at him with a great intensity! It was a revelation much larger, more ground shaking than when he found out the Yum Shoppe doesn't accept Flex! At that moment, Johnny realized...he never took his Math Placement Test!!!"

Ooooh! Scary right?!
