Laura Hussey, Political Science, in the Baltimore Sun and Herald-Mail

On October 22, the Baltimore Sun published an article about Baltimore County campaign signs and how some are set up in a way to display bipartisanship. Laura Hussey, an associate professor of political science, was quoted in the article and discussed Democrat Tom Quirk’s campaign signs being placed near Republican Joseph Hooe’s. Quirk is running for re-election as 1st District County Councilman, and Hooe is running for state delegate in District 12. Hussey said it’s not unusual for candidates to tout their work across party lines.

“It may influence voters’ perceptions of a candidate’s character traits, and these traits are a factor in some voters’ choices,” Hussey said. “Most people…seem to prefer collaborative over combatitive personalities.”

In an article published October 22 in the Herald-Mail, Hussey commented on Maryland voter turnout trends heading into Election Day on November 4. Hussey said she doesn’t expect a sudden uptick in voters turning out for the election next month. She said that residents pay less attention to elections in an “off-election” year.

“Residents are not saturated with political information as you would in a presidential election year,” Hussey said. “Voters are less engaged.”

Thomas Schaller, Political Science, in The Hill

An article published October 19 in The Hill examines several elections in the South where Democratic candidates have close ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton in states such as Arkansas and Kentucky. The article mentions how it may be difficult for Democratic candidates in those states to distance themselves from an unpopular current president.

Thomas Schaller, professor and chair of political science, was interviewed for the article and said, “I’m constantly puzzled when other people are surprised that there hasn’t been this Democratic revival in the South.” Schaller has argued that Democrats should make the South less of a priority in winning elections, adding, “my feeling is that the underlying fundamentals in the region work against the Democrats.”

Schaller said Hillary Clinton is the Democrats’ best chance to win in the South in 2016, but even if she’s successful, it wouldn’t necessarily mean significant changes for Democratic strategy in the South.

“I think she’s a good test case for how competitive the Democrats can be in the South, because she can pair her husband’s appeal in the more rural South and presumably draw support in the places where Obama did well,” Schaller said. “If she can’t start flipping states, then who is?”

George Derek Musgrove, History, in the Washington Post

George Derek Musgrove ’97, history, associate professor of history, is writing a book about race and democracy in the District and was interviewed for the article.

“There is not a great deal of policy difference between them,” said Musgrove when describing the two mayoral candidates. “They are, quite frankly, running on style,” Musgrove said. “Bowser is trying to portray Catania as a hothead, and Catania is trying to portray Bowser as a lightweight.”

Doing Good While Doing Well in Business Summary

<Tagline>Did you miss it? Here's a quick overview.</Tagline>

Wednesday's Entrepreneurial Workshop, "Doing Well While Doing Good in Business" with Jaime McDonald was simply fantastic. She went over strategies and benefits of being in business not only to make a living, but to do good for your community and the world.

Her company, GiveCorps, was recently acquired by Network for Good. Both companies work with Non-Profits to help them fund raise in the 21st century. But, don't think that they are simply in it for the goodness of their hearts.

While most businesses are responsible to their shareholders and for making a profit, social enterprises often have a double or a triple bottom line. They focus on their profit, but also focus on how their efforts effect the people in the community and its effect on the planet (not necessarily environmentally, but the overall effect on the world).

Social enterprise is different than being a social entrepreneur. McDonald explained that a social enterprise is any organization or venture that achieves its primary social or environmental mission using business methods. Social entrepreneurs are the change agents in the social sector. They often run non-profits that are pursuing a goal to make change in the world. Their goals can be similar to those of social enterprises, but their methods of business are different and can be limited to fundraising and grants.

She also mentioned a number of social enterprise companies that are actively bridging the gap of doing good and doing well. Many we have heard about in classes and case studies, like Tom's, Ben & Jerry's, and Kiva, but here are two that have made an affect to all three bottom lines.

An Australian company that delivers toilet paper to individuals and companies across Australia. They shipped their first product in March 2013 and have been "over the moon ever since." Their toilet paper is gracing bathrooms across Australia, but since they donate 50% of their profits to WaterAid to build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world.

White Group publishes paper on microscale electrical sensors

<Tagline>Super sensors at the micromolecular scale.</Tagline>

In this report the group combined the spatiotemporal resolution of microelectrodes and the chemical specificity of folding aptamer-based recognition to create sensors with improved sensitivities over macroscale sensors. Specifically, they reported for the first time the use of 25-μm-diameter gold electrodes as a platform for the fabrication of reproducible E-AB sensors for two representative targets – adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin. In order to circumvent small sensor currents and large background currents, they electro-deposited dendritic gold nanostructures to increase electrode surface area while maintaining the microelectrode geometric footprint. They found that the use of a nanostructured surface improved sensor performance in terms of signal-to-noise and stability. Furthermore, they observed that employing the microsensors in 100% undiluted fetal bovine serum decreased background currents from the reduction of dissolved oxygen thus allowing for improved sensor performance and demonstrated that the nonspecific adsorption on serum proteins act to further passivate the electrode surface area. As this is a work in progress, they highlight the challenges and prospects of electrochemical, aptamer-based sensors built on small-scale electrodes. The protocols presented represent general guidelines for the development of electrochemical sensors with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution and chemical specificity.

The one thing we ask is that in order to vote, guests must have been at the entire event. It's only fair.
