Become a Faculty/Staff Diversity Presenter

<Tagline>Student Life's Mosaic Center!</Tagline>

Dear Student Affairs Colleagues and Student Life Mosaic Center Faculty/Staff Partners,

As you know, our 21st Century global society has become increasingly diverse. Many of our students, despite being open to that diversity, still need to increase their cultural competencies - the skills and awareness related to communication and interaction across all social identities.

Student Life's Mosaic Center staff are creating a new Mosaic Center Diversity Presenters group to help develop this important life and interaction skill set within our students. This group, an outgrowth of our former Diversity Education Intern program, is the next evolution in our diversity and social justice education efforts. To prepare to launch this new initiative, this fall we are offering diversity "train the trainer" sessions to students, faculty and staff interested in serving as diversity and social justice education presenters. Our first 3 hour training for UMBC staff and faculty (and selected students) will be:

Friday, October 24, 2014

2-5 pm

The Mosaic Center, Commons Rm. 2B23

If you have prior diversity presentation and facilitation experience and can attend the training, visit our myUMBC group event and complete the brief interest form: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/themosaic/events/26236. If you have questions or can't attend this training but want to be a presenter, email mosaic@umbc.edu or call Lisa Gray directly at 410-455-8478.

We are pursuing a co-presenter/co-facilitators structure in which we hope to pair UMBC faculty and staff with students to present workshops to classes, student organizations and departments across campus by request. So, staff and faculty will most likely be paired with students to serve as lead "mentor" presenters to support the awareness, knowledge and skill development of the student presenters. We envision offering workshops to the campus in the same fashion as our Safe Zone program sessions.

We've received several student interest forms for the training already. We really could use more faculty/staff participants! So, thank you for considering this opportunity.

Celebrate What?

In the face of discrimination, the ethnic group rallied around its most famous historic member, indirectly prompting the creation of a federal holiday.

The group? Italian Americans.

The holiday? Columbus day.

Now, some areas are replacing Columbus’s day with one honoring the indigenous people of North America. The city of Seattle is the latest to make the move, following Berkeley, Minneapolis, South Dakota, and Hawaii. (Alaska doesn’t celebrate the day at all).

The truth is, Columbus’s reputation is mixed as best.

Not only did the explorer accidentally end up in the Caribbean while trying to find India, his actions in the New World primarily involved enslaving and killing the locals as well as plundering their land. These atrocities set the stage for centuries of exploitation and even genocide across the Americas.

Hence, Indigenous People’s Day.

According to Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant:

“This is about taking a stand against racism and discrimination.“

Live in a place that doesn’t celebrate Indigenous People’s Day?

Don’t worry, we have you covered. These Columbus Day e-cards from the Indian Country Media Network are the perfect way to enjoy the holiday .
