The Sociology Department will offer an exciting special topics course in Spring 2015. The course is part of the Breaking Ground project on campus and will offer the opportunity to interact with local communities regarding access to healthy food.

This course focuses on the “practical side” of sociology and applies sociological insights and methods to understanding local social issues and to assess programs intended to alleviate them. Students in this course will examine social issues affecting local residents through a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project. This semester students will research local urban agriculture projects addressing food deserts, access to healthy food, food security, and environmental problems. This research targets the intersection of local social inequalities, public health issues, and social change. Students will collect data through various methods in research teams, volunteer, document community needs, develop action plans, and make recommendations for change. The ultimate products will be a research report and community presentation.

Meet Stephen Szucs: Founder of SustainableJoes

<Tagline>On a mission to help us #RETHINK the way we view the earth</Tagline>

This month, the founder of SustainablJoes biked to UMBC to meet UMBC students, staff and faculty. He is biking across country to raise awareness about sustainability! We asked him a few questions to share with you:

What does sustainability mean to you?

“Ensuring every generation has everything it needs forever. To live a life of abundance”

What made you decide to do this trip across North America?

"It has always been a dream of mine to travel around and share my passion for a sustainable society with other people. My dream is to one day travel the world with the same purpose."

How long have you been on tour? How much longer?

"I've been traveling since June 4th and have accumulated about 2500 miles. I'll finish whenever my mission is done and I can engage as many people as possible. But my current plan is to end between American Thanksgiving and the Winter Solstice"

Where did the idea for the solar bike come from?

The bike was manufactured by Organic Transit and is sponsored by No Commission Annuity and multitude of other sustainable minded companies"

What big sustainability advance do you want to see in the next 10 years?

"I want to see all of our energy drawn from renewable resources as well as significant policy changes to our water and waste management."

Who would you say is your biggest influence when it comes to being green?

"Kids. Kids are the future and there is no reason they shouldn't have all of the greatest resources at their fingertips when they're ready to start making an impact of their own."

What book/article/tedtalk would you recommend to students?

"There are so many good TedTalks and books I could recommend because you should always be learning and expanding your knowledge. Definitely check out my website as well. Check out this Ted Talk as well!

How should we, as students, get involved in making a difference?

"College kids have more opportunity than anyone else. They have a vast amount of resources. It's a lot harder to find money outside of college. Use it while you're here. For a long time I didn't do what I was passionate about. I did well in high school and college, but didn't apply myself enough. If you're not happy with what you're doing or studying make a change and you will find new energy. Don't listen to what society wants you to do. Do what you want to do and you will find out it can change your outlook on life, as well as the way people perceive you."

What is your sustainability pet peeve?

"I don't really have a pet peeve. I may have a one point, but I realized that negativity just drains my energy. I want to encourage people I meet to apply sustainability into whatever their life style is."

What will you do after your tour is over?

"My dream is to have a tv show where I travel the world and share my passion for sustainable change with cultures and societies everywhere."

Stephen's Five E's when he engages with people on his tour.

"Engage in an Entertaining manner Educate then and make them Empowered to make more sustainable choices and to make those choices Easy to incorporate into their lives."

Critical Language Scholarship Program

<Tagline>Study abroad this summer with a full scholarship!</Tagline>

U.S. Department of State-sponsored Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program. The CLS Program is a full scholarship for overseas summer language study for American undergraduate and graduate students.

The program is 8-10 weeks long each summer, and we offer academic credit through Bryn Mawr College. While some of the CLS languages require previous study, most of them do not require students to have any prior experience studying critical languages. Again, the CLS Program is a full scholarship – selected students do not pay anything!

The CLS Program looks to represent the full diversity of the U.S. students population in the broadest sense. We hope to see more students from STEM majors participate in the Program. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics drive global innovation, but less than 20% of all Americans who study abroad are in STEM fields. We know that employers want to hire candidates with language skills and cultural expertise—two things that students will gain by going abroad with CLS. Learning a critical language will give UMBC students a competitive edge in the job market and set them apart from their peers.

We have scheduled an information session for UMBC students with Brian Souders from the Study Abroad Office. It will be from 3pm-4pm at 331 Commons on Thursday, October 16th.

Upcoming October Events and November Plans

Hello there again everyone!

I wanted to post a quick reminder to everyone that we'll be trying to make it out to the Renaissance Festival this Sunday. In order to make sure you can get parking, try to show up as soon as possible (ticket windows open at 9:30 and the fair opens at 9:45). This will likely be the busiest day, and when they run out of parking they will turn patrons away. Additionally, it would be a good idea to purchase tickets online and print them out before hand so you don't wind up in line con. You can get all the info you need and buy tickets here: http://www.rennfest.com/ Also, for those of you requiring rides, I (Velth) will be on campus to offer rides; we will be leaving at 9:00 (sooner if we have everyone who is supposed to be traveling with us). I have two free seats left in my car so far, but if we need more we'll ask other people to offer rides.

Additionally, don't forget that next Sunday, the 26th, we'll be having a cookout/movie night at Harbor. If you'd like to bring anything, feel free! We still need some plates and utensils, drinks, and general foodly type things. I will be bringing and cooking some chicken kebabs (my first time so don't hurt me if they're not that great). Afterwards, Vice President Vicky has offered to let us upstairs to make use of one of the community rooms to watch movies in. If you have something you want us to consider watching, make sure to bring it to the event!

If you have any food allergies that need to be considered for the 26th (I believe we have one peanut allergy, and one group member has offered to make some peanut brittle so let me know how severe that allergy is).

Next month, November, we're looking a bit busy. We have two fund raiser game events on November 9th and 30th from 1:00 to 6:00 (estimated times) that I'd like to get some extra volunteers for. If you can volunteer, just let me know and I'll talk details with you (rides, times, dates, work required, etc.)

We would also like to hold a Thanksgiving Dinner with a tentative date of the weekend after actual Thanksgiving (November 29th/30th) If you have any opinion on the date or time, let me know, otherwise expect to hear more pinned down details soon.

We will try to hold a bake sale in November for those of us who want a chance to raise some money for the group, make and eat snacks, and get involved with some of the other Maryland furs. We do not have a set time or date for this event, and are still looking for suggestions and volunteered time! So far, we plan on cooking up some home made goodies to sell, having a table to sell them at in the Breezeway area, and inviting some of the Maryland fursuiters to come help us attract attention. If you can volunteer any ideas or time, it would be much appreciated.

Additionally, the Anime Society has invited us to join them for their RetrieverCon on November 15th. The event will include a cosplay contest and an possibility for us to hold some sort of panel on furries. We would want to make this panel entertaining for everyone there and not just informative, so any ideas or volunteers will be welcome. I personally went last year and the event was pretty fun, including food and everything. And some of the costumes they came up with were impressive!

That should conclude our events for October and November.

We will try to arrange to have a room reserved on all Fridays from 11:00 to 1:00 (including on weeks we do not have official meetings) in case anyone wanted a warm place to meet up with the rest of the group.

Also, I am going to post a discussion soon on the forums here that will include our constitution, so we can discuss amendments (mostly just renaming things to be a bit more professional) as well as elections next year (not trying to politically influence anyone; we just want to have a smooth transition so the group can stay healthy).

Thanks for sticking with me through this entire thing! I hope to see a lot of you this Sunday at the fair.

~Velth

Interested in Astrobiology?

Do you think we are alone in the universe?

This image, produced in 1995 by the Hubble Space Telescope, suggests that the visible universe comprises at least ~130 thousand million galaxies. Each of these galaxies contains something in the order of 100 thousand million stars. Recent estimates suggest that there may exist an average of more than one planet per star.

At least once, this chemistry and physics has given rise to sentient life. What are the chances that it happened more than once? What about other types of life? How could we possibly know?

INDS430 Astrobiology combines physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, and geology to ask what science can contribute to such questions. If you want to learn about the discovery of planets orbiting other stars (“exoplanets”), the chemistry of space, the originand evolution of life on Earth, or habitable environments within our solar system this course is for you!

If interested in the course then please contact Dr. Stephen Freeland at
freeland@umbc.edu
