Devin Hagerty, Political Science, 2014-2015 Lipitz Professor

Devin Hagerty, professor of political science and founding director of the
global studies program, has been named the Lipitz Professor of the Arts,
Humanities, and Social Sciences for 2014-2015. This professorship is
supported by an endowment created by Roger C. Lipitz and the Lipitz
Family Foundation “to recognize and support innovative and distinguished
teaching and research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.”

An internationally recognized scholar of South Asian international
relations (India-Pakistan and South Asia-US), Hagerty came to UMBC from
the University of Sydney in 2001. Since then he has published two books,
five articles, and 13 book chapters. He founded the journal Asian Security in
2003 and has served as its managing editor or co-editor ever since. He
teaches courses in international relations and has won the Political
Science Teacher of the Year award three times. He has served as chair of
the political science department, currently chairs one of the working
groups for the university’s strategic planning, and now directs our new,
fast-growing global studies program—among a long list of service to
UMBC. In November 2013, Hagerty wrote an op-ed published in Inside Higher Edin
which he introduced UMBC’s global studies program and argued that a
liberal arts education is essential in developing a “global competence”
    among students.

During his year as the Lipitz Professor, Dr. Hagerty will work on a book
project entitled “Fear, Ambition, and the Sturdy Child of Terror: South
    Asia’s Triangular Nuclear Dilemma.”

DECRIMINALIZATION MEANS IT’S STILL ILLEGAL

The UMBC Division of Student Affairs is fully-committed to the safety, personal health, and well-being of every student. Our programs and services are aligned to support positive and lawful choices, cognizant of the detrimental effects of illegal drug use.

On April 14, 2014, Governor O’Malley signed Senate Bill 364 into law, which decriminalized the use or possession of less than 10 grams (about 1/3 of an ounce) of marijuana. The new law goes into effect on October 1, 2014 and it should be noted: MARIJUANA IS STILL ILLEGAL in Maryland, just less illegal than it used to be.

The UMBC Division of Student Affairs would like for students and their parents to consider the following points:

UMBC data from the National Collegiate Health Assessment shows that less than 30% of our students have ever used marijuana. Less than 3% of UMBC students report using marijuana three or more times per week (National College Health Assessment-II, UMBC Institutional Data Report, 2013). Simply put, not everyone’s doing it.

Online Mental Health Resources

<Tagline>UMBC Counseling Center</Tagline>

Did you know that the Counseling Center offers a wealth of mental health resources online? Parents can access information through the Counseling Center’s website (www.umbc.edu/counseling) and the mental health app Just In Case (counseling.umbc.edu/justincase). In addition, the Counseling Center offers free, anonymous and confidential mental health screenings through ULifeline (www.ulifeline.org/umbc). ULifeline is an online resource center for information on mental health and suicide prevention, in addition to tips on many aspects of wellness, such as sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress management and healthy relationships.

Just as you encourage your children to get physicals to monitor their health, encourage them to take mental health screenings to monitor their psychological wellness. Online screenings are a proactive method of identifying signs of stress or mental illness, and early detection is key to prevention of later problems. In addition, the process of taking an online screening can help students become educated about various mental health conditions. To access the online screenings on depression, anxiety, social anxiety, eating problems, alcohol and drug use, or thoughts of self-harm, click this link: www.ulifeline.org/umbc/self_evaluator.

ULifeline is a program of the Jed Foundation, the nation’s leading organization working to prevent suicide and improve the mental health of college students, and is overseen by an expert board of mental health professionals.

1:00pm Friday, 10 October 2015, ITE 325b

Over the past several years, engineering models for human-computer interaction — models that predict and explain performance in quantitative terms–have received increasing attention. In this talk, I’ll give an overview of experimentation and modeling work in my lab, in the areas of mobile interaction, augmented reality, and accessibility. Our research attempts to provide insight into emerging areas of HCI, where interaction goes beyond conventional desktop user interfaces to encompass the influences of physical body movement and cognitive strategies on performance.

Robert St. Amant is an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at North Carolina State University; his degrees are from Johns Hopkins and the University of Massachusetts. He is on the editorial board of the Oxford Series on Cognitive Models and Architectures, and he is a former member of the steering committee for the ACM Intelligent User Interfaces conference. His current research is on human-computer interaction and cognitive modeling; past topics have included intelligent user interfaces, exploratory data analysis, and animal tool use. In 2012 his popular science book, Computing for Ordinary Mortals, was published by Oxford University Press.
