Well, this might take awhile to live down.

As it turns out, Thomas Duncan, now the first man in the U.S. with the Ebola virus, could’ve been isolated and treated by a Dallas hospital much sooner…

…if not for a computer glitch.

Despite telling a nurse that he had recently been in West Africa, Duncan was released on Sept. 25 due to an error in his electronic health record (EHR). The error in question prevented attending physicians from seeing his travel history before attending to him.

Which meant that they wouldn’t have known to look out for signs of the virus. Which meant that they had no reason keep him contained.

All of which allowed him to go back out into America’s ninth-most populated city, with a devastating virus in tow.

Of course, the hospital isn’t the only one having a rough few days.

Not only is Duncan is serious condition, he’s now facing prosecution from his home-country of Liberia. They allege that Duncan lied about coming into contact with the virus in a Liberian airport.

Hey, to forgive is divine, right?

PLEASE READ--SEEK 2015 Registration

Hi everyone - PLEASE READ!! Sorry for the rush here. I just found out that - by Tuesday - we need to have a idea of how many people from UMBC are going the SEEK Conference in Nashville in January. Buses leave from Mt. St. Mary's on December 31 for the conference. Cost is $350-400, depending on when you register (registration is under "Mount St. Mary's, Emmitsburg") plus transportation. We have some scholarship money for those who need, and we will be doing fundraising. Right now, though, I need numbers for bus reservation purposes. If you're a bit on the fence but leaning toward going, put your name down. Also, could someone send this out to the listserve and myumbc? Thank you!!

My externship program with the Choice Program inspired me to pursue a career in public service. It motivated me to pursue a career where real change can happen through my work. A career where I can use my skills, training and advocacy to help others.

Q: What has been the greatest success in your career? The greatest challenge?

I am very proud of being able to serve the citizens of Baltimore City throughout my career, often serving the most vulnerable citizens. Having served as Deputy Mayor for 4 years and now as Chief of Staff of a large U.S. city, I know the decisions made will impact future generations: from school construction plans to new recreation and aquatics centers, to pension reform, to implementing the city’s 10-year financial plan. My greatest challenge has been facing historic budget deficits and dwindling federal resources. I am proud of the fact that when we come into the mayor’s office in 2010, we faced a historic budget deficit of over $121 million without drastically cutting public safety and essential services or raising property taxes.

Q: What are your proudest personal achievements?

Two things: 1. As a first generation Greek American, I was the first person in my family to graduate from college, much less graduate from law school. I am proud of my professional and educational achievements and strive to always give back in my career. 2. A few months after I became Deputy Mayor at the age of 40, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am proud to say that I am a breast cancer survivor.
