Outstanding Alumna: Hadieh Shafie ’04

The UMBC Alumni Association proudly honors distinguished alumni and faculty for their accomplishments and dedication to UMBC. Today we’re talking with Hadieh Shafie ‘04, imaging and digital arts, about her career as an independent artist.

Name: Hadieh Shafie ’04 M.F.A., imaging and digital arts
Job Title: Independent Artist
Award Category: Visual and Performing Arts

Q: Why did you choose to attend UMBC?

I came to UMBC because I became interested in performance and digital arts. I learned about UMBC’s program when doing research on graduate schools. I found a few key people at UMBC that really piqued my interest. Also, it was one of the programs that supported graduate students with financial backing and professional experience.

Q: Is there a particular class or professor at UMBC who really inspired you?

Every one in the department was incredibly supportive, still there are a few faculty members that made a deep impression on me and they are Professor Kathy O’Dell, Professor Preminda Jacob, Affiliate Associate Professor Symmes Gardner. Their mentorship had a tremendous impact on my time at UMBC and my development as an artist and as an individual.

Q: Please tell us a little about the trajectory of your career and what you are working on now.

I am currently in the studio producing work for my solo show with Leila Heller Gallery in New York which will debut in February 2015. Leading up to this, I have seen my work presented in not only the U.S. but also in the Middle East, Asia and Europe. Seeing my work presented in so many countries and venues has provided an exciting evolution for how I think about my practice as an artist.

Q: What has been the greatest success in your career? The greatest challenge?

The greatest success has been to realize my ambition and dream of waking every day to lots of work and experimentation in the studio. To know that I am engaged in the kind of work that leaves no desire to ever consider “retirement.” The greatest challenge has been that there is never enough time.

Q: What are your proudest personal achievements?

Staying grounded has been very important to me and I strive for this quality every day.

Researcher of the Week: Nina Beri

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Nina...

She is a Biological Sciences and a URA Scholar. She is also a member of Alpha Sigma Kappa, Women in Technical Studies, and a member of "UMBC Rockets and More".

How did you find your mentor for year research?

I have been an undergraduate student researcher in Dr. Gardner’s lab since Fall 2013.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?

When I joined this lab, I was excited to be able to contribute to the development of biofuels as an alternative energy source. The project that I am working on contributes directly to research into biofuels. It focuses on developing the Cellvibrio japonicus bacteria into a consolidated bioprocessor, an organism that can both digest tough cellulosic plant mass and produce fatty acids, which can be used to create biodiesel and other valuable chemical products.

Is this your first independent research project?

Yes, this is my first independent research project.

Do you get course credit for this work?

I do get course credit for this work, as it counts as one of my upper-level Biology lab courses.

How much time do you put into it?

During the school year, I put about 10 hours a week into the project, and during the summer I put around 25 hours a week into the project.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?

My mentor, Dr. Gardner, encouraged me to apply for the URA.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?

Before applying for the URA, I had completed all of the Biology core courses, as well as various upper-level Biology courses, including 306L, a lab course that introduces core concepts of molecular biology, and a semester of research in the Gardner lab. I had also begun taking Bio 434 and 414, two classes that focus on analysis of scientific research papers.

Was the application difficult to do?

The application was very straightforward.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?

My mentor provided valuable critiques for each draft of the application I wrote.

What has been the hardest part about your research?

The hardest part about the research is being able to accurately write or talk about it!

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?

I have found that having a foundation of basic laboratory skills makes understanding a wide range of biological concepts much easier, since research papers and discoveries in the field are usually based on work in a laboratory. Having an understanding of how one experiment can lead to a certain result makes it easy to extrapolate and imagine how a similar experiment could lead to another discovery – or to find fault in the methods used or the way the paper was written. The perspective I have gained from working in the lab helps me to appreciate scientific discoveries in a deeper way.

What else are you involved in on campus?

I am a member of "Alpha Sigma Kappa, Women in Technical Studies", and a member of "UMBC Rockets and More".

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Be persistent! There are so many wonderful professors around campus who conduct exciting research, so if you are interested in getting involved in research, the best option is to become familiar with the work of several professors and reach out to them to inquire about doing research in their lab. You can learn so much from doing research that you would never learn in a classroom, and you will be able to work more independently in the lab than you would in a formal classroom setting.

What are your career goals?

I would like to work in a laboratory for a year or so after graduating before deciding on an area of focus and applying to graduate school.

Read her abstract here...

DoIT Changes Model of Blackboard Support

As part of an effort to improve service on Blackboard, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is changing how the Blackboard system operates at UMBC. Starting in Winter 2015, UMBC will move from running Blackboard on campus to using Blackboard’s own cloud-based instance, often referred to as hosted system, for course delivery. This is being done as part of a new agreement with a consortium of other research universities known as NET+ that is associated with Internet2. A benefit of this new approach is that Blackboard will handle software upgrades directly, which will minimize the impact to students and faculty.

Currently, about 65 percent of all Bb clients are hosted by Blackboard. In Maryland, this includes Towson University, Morgan State University, Montgomery College, Bowie State University, the Community College of Baltimore County, and the Maryland State Department of Education.

“We’ve considered managed hosting before, but the innovation, commitment to standards and value of this agreement are very compelling,” says Jack Suess, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. “Ultimately, I believe it will help us advance UMBC’s focus on student success and better use technology to support pedagogical innovation by connecting UMBC to a wider community of research universities innovating with the same tools.”

In addition to managed hosting, the new agreement -- also announced today by Blackboard -- provides 24/7 end-user support, content storage, mobile and collaborative solutions, analytics and other resources. Once migrated, Blackboard will still be available in myUMBC, as well as the blackboard.umbc.edu and www.umbc.edu/blackboard web addresses. However, for Winter 2015 and Spring 2015, new course shells will be created on our hosted Bb server managed by Blackboard.

Starting in Summer 2015, the configuration and setup of courses will change. Specifically, all courses will have a permanent “master shell” for managing content that faculty will link to semester shells automatically populated with officially enrolled students. As a result, there will be no need for faculty to export old courses into new course shells, thus duplicating our overall file storage every semester, as is the case now.

Further details and plans will be announced on the DoIT News site throughout this academic year. In the meantime, DoIT’s instructional technology staff have created a focused set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the Bb migration to managed hosting.
hackUMBC ’14 concludes

Over the week-end September 27-28, over 170 college and high school students converged upon UMBC for the second hackUMBC hackathon. This free event, spanning 24 continuous hours, brought students together to create, make, or otherwise “hack” together new technology projects, either individually or as a team. As with many hackathons, there was no limit to the type of technology students could work on — hackUMBC 2014 projects ranged from developing mobile apps and assistive/wearable technologies to applied virtual reality representations of cyberspace, a ‘smart’ autonomous tank, and reverse-engineering (and then porting to Linux) the Myo command protocol. The sky was the limit in terms of ideas and skill levels — indeed, many attendees were first-time “hackers” looking to learn programming or engineering concepts in an inclusive and fun environment.

Following opening ceremonies and brief remarks by the sponsors and UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski, participants took over the second floor ITE classrooms Saturday-into-Sunday before moving into the UC Ballroom to showcase their products before a panel of judges. Prizes were awarded for the most innovative, polished, complex, and useful ideas/technologies.

hackUMBC 2014 was well-supported by corporate sponsors, including Raytheon, Microsoft, Northrop Grumman, MITRE, and ClearEdge Solutions, among others. Campus partners included the Alex Brown Center for Enterpreneurship and the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Additional support, participant encouragement, and round-the-clock motivational energy was provided by Mike Swift, chairman of Major League Hacking.

hackUMBC was organized and run by Michael Bishoff (Junior, CMPE), Randi Williams (Junior, CMPE), and Minhaz Mahmud (Senior, CMSC). CSEE’s Dr. Rick Forno serves as faculty advisor.

Special thanks to the UMBC volunteer judges Dr. Charles Nicholas, Shawn Lupoli, Geoff Weiss, and the many student volunteers who assisted in making the event a success.
