UMBC Team Participates in White House Game Jam

For three days beginning September 6 the White House Educational Game Jam invited a select set of professional game developers and academics to create innovative educational game prototypes over single weekend, with the resulting games presented at the White House Executive Office Building.

There were 23 teams and about 100 participants. The team sizes ranged from 1 to 9, with most around 4-5. It was a mix of major companies and schools. Examples of large companies were: Ubisoft, Sony and Rovio. Small companies were: BrainPop, GlassLab and RocketMind. Academic teams included the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Melon University, American University, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, the Smithsonian and UMBC.

UNC and UMBC fielded teams of undergraduates, rather than grads or professionals. The event wasn’t a competition, just brainstorming and prototyping educational games.

“Our game came out quite well, and we got a bunch of great comments,” says Marc Olano, faculty advisor and associate professor of computer science and engineering.

Participating students were:

Eliot Carney-Seim, BS, Computer Science, Junior

Paul Tschirgi, BA, Visual Arts, Senior

Calvin Kumagai, BA, Visual Arts, Senior

Alex Grube, BS, Computer Science, 2012

The students developed the game Bob Blob Bomb Lob. It is a 3D game to teach step-by-step algorithmic thinking and debugging while you save a hapless blob from the bomb he has ingested. You can see a video of the game below.

New Entrance Project Updates

The Project Team is grateful to the Campus Community for your patience and understanding as we continue construction of the New Campus Entrance, an important construction project to upgrade the roadways, pedestrian pathways and parking surrounding the main campus entrance.

There has been significant progress on the project, but we still have a long way to go. This is to provide some important updates.

Campus Plaza

The main entrance to campus through the Plaza will officially be open as of Monday, September 29, 2014. More of the Plaza will become available to pedestrians making access between buildings even more convenient. These pathways will be completely accessible. A small area in the center of the Plaza will remain inaccessible as the Project completes plantings, furnishings and fixtures.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, the roadway and pedestrian path behind Admin Building will close. The project will be improving this area to provide better access to service and delivery vehicles to this part of campus. Pedestrians can access the Sherman Hall courtyard from the front side of Admin Building.

Admin Drive Garage

The work area of on the east side of the Admin Drive garage has progressed and will expand closer to the RAC Building. Vehicles and pedestrians will be re-routed through this area, but there will be no interruption to service and signs will direct the public to their destinations. This transition is anticipated some time in October. The Project Team will provide notice and information will be posted on the website.

Work on the new ramp to access the top of the garage on the east side continues through November, 2014. The new parking area on the west side will be completed after the ramp is completed. Access to this parking area will occur when the project transitions to the west side of the garage.

Campus Entry Road

The campus entry road work remains on hold until the project receives MDE approval for this area. The Project anticipates this approval in October, 2014. When this occurs, traffic patterns on UMBC Blvd. will change, but there will be no interruption to service—and signs will direct the public to their destinations. The Project Team will provide notice and information will be posted on the website.

There are no changes to parking at this time. The Project Team will provide notice if and when changes are anticipated.

As we continue to move forward with this important project, we encourage you to visit the Campus Entrance website and join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction on this project may impact you.

F5 October Events

Greetings everyone!

As promised, here are the October events (attached are the Maryland fur events, thanks to Rexxie for giving us early access):

    Sunday, October 5th:
Officer meeting from 6:00pm to 7:00pm in Sondheim 101. Feel free to
show up to discuss our November events. If you won't be able to attend,
you can also reply with a comment here with any event ideas you'd like us to
discuss, or send them to us in an email.

    Friday, October 10th:
Monthly Group Meeting from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Quad. We will be
covering the decisions made during the officer meeting including
potential events in November. Meeting minutes will be posted for those
of you who cannot attend to weigh in on decisions.

    Sunday, October 19th: The
Day of Wrong at the Renaissance Festival. The festival is open from
10:00am to 7:00pm, though we may not necessarily be there the entire
time. Please send us an email if you either need a ride. Keep in
touch to help us coordinate a meet up. (Tickets cost $22 and can be
bought here: http://www.rennfest.com/tickets Remember, purchasing tickets ahead of time will dramatically reduce your time spent in Line Con)

    Saturday/Sunday October 25/26th:
F5 Cook Out, starting at 5:00pm. Meet up outside on Habor on campus for
a charcoal cook out. We'll try doing kebabs and smores, followed up by
retiring into one of the Community rooms in Harbor where we'll have
access to several couches, a kitchen area, and a huge tv. Feel free to
leave whenever (preferably before quiet hours.)

Furthermore,
we have some upcoming volunteering events. These events are coordinated
by a local Knights of Columbus leader for us, and provide our group
with a source of income. We volunteer by manning a stand at M&T Bank
Stadium for some of the Ravens games. I need a team of four group
members willing to take TEAM training (allows you to serve alcohol and
man a register), and who are willing to attend two additional games
during the rest of the regular season. Please contact me if you might be
willing to volunteer some time (events usually eat up most of the day
    and occur on Sunday).

Additionally, we might be holding informal events on Fridays for those of you who are free and want to attend.

Finally,
those of you who haven't done so yet, feel free to send me your Skype
information and I'll add you to our Skype group. It's a nice way to keep
up on the goings on and coordinate with other people if you want to
    hang out.

That should be all for now. Hope to see you all again soon!

~Velth

P.S. Sorry for sending notifications with this post along with a group email. I'm still not sure which method is the most effective way to get in contact with the group. If you have an opinion on it, send me an email. That'll help me determine how to proceed.
