A: I enjoy being a social justice leader on campus, because I feel like I'm raising people's consciences by educating them about social justice issues and engaging with them in critical dialogues. I love learning from people's perspectives, widening my own, and creating change together.

A: Overall, the most important thing I have learned so far at UMBC is to be open-minded. Time and time again, open-mindedness has shown me how much I can learn from my peers and other members of the UMBC community. Whether that's in a classroom discussion, at a staff meeting, or on a leadership retreat like STRiVE, being open to other perspectives and listening to others has allowed me to learn so much and really become a much better person overall.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: With the Women's Center, I started an annual week-long campaign called Critical Social Justice that is meant to engage the UMBC community in creative projects that are made by fellow community members and initiate dialogues that are not often given voice on campus. With our inaugural Critical Social Justice in March 2014, we were able to host 17 programs, including a thought-provoking keynote lecture by culture critic Jay Smooth that over 200 UMBC students, faculty, staff, and community members attended. It's my hope that Critical Social Justice is able to not only raise awareness about social justice issues, but to also allow members of the UMBC community to have their voice heard on campus, whether they be artists, activists, scholars, or a little bit of everything.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: My favorite spot on campus is--big surprise here--the Women's Center. It's not just that we have a comfy lounge, free coffee and tea (and condoms and pads and tampons), and a library bursting with a range of books from queer theory to dystopian science fiction. The Women's Center is a place to come when you want to continue your class discussion with a group of people who are eager to listen and add their input. It's a place where you can have a good cry and get a warm hug. It's a place that is constantly answering the needs of the UMBC community whether it be a student who just needs to talk about their relationship troubles or the childcare crisis of 2013. We are a community that is always trying to raise awareness about social justice issues happening in our world through events like Take Back the Night and the Clothesline Project. We are a community that is eager to hear about a person's ideas for an event, and even more excited to help them foster that idea into reality. The Women's Center is a site of compassion, growth, and strength. I really recommend giving us a visit, and I promise to spare you the schmaltz.

A New Fight Against Ebola

In fact, it has gotten SO bad that The White House has decided to take drastic measures. Is that the military I hear?

On Tuesday, the government promised $500 million to respond to this “top national security priority”. In response to the disease, the Department of Defense plans to send 3,000 troops to create training sites, build new facilities, and ultimately combat the disease. This comes after a recent visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by President Obama.

While this recent news provides a blip of enthusiasm, many critics are saying “little too late, Mr. Prez”. With over 2,500 deaths and 5 affected countries, many argue this response should have happened a long time ago. Check out this interesting article highlighting some of the statistics of this disease here.

The United Nations approximates that $1 billion can effectively control the disease. A month ago is was $100 million. Dr. David Nabarro, U.N. coordinator of Ebola states:

“Because of the way the outbreak is advancing, the level of surge we need to do is unprecedented. It is massive.”

Not only is procrastination on taking action expensive, it is also deadly.

Alright readers, how would you respond to this global health threat?

Outstanding Alumna: Dr. Claudia Pearce '89

Over the next few weeks we’ll be introducing you to this year’s Alumni Award winners. The UMBC Alumni Association proudly honors distinguished alumni and faculty for their accomplishments and dedication to UMBC. Today we’re talking with Dr. Claudia Pearce ‘89, computer science, about her career working with the NSA as Senior Computer Science Authority.

Name: Dr. Claudia Pearce ’89 M.S., ’94 Ph.D., computer science
Job Title: Senior Computer Science Authority, NSA
Award Category: Engineering and Information Technology
Q: Why did you choose to attend UMBC?
I chose UMBC because of the quality of the computer science program and its central Maryland location. I am currently NSA Technology Directorate’s Senior Executive Academic Liaison (SEAL) for UMBC.
Q: Is there a particular class or professor at UMBC who really inspired you?
Dr. Charles Nicholas, professor of computer science, was my Ph.D. advisor. Since that time, Dr. Nicholas has continued to be a source of knowledge and inspiration that has helped me maintain my technical roots. He was very flexible in my choice of dissertation topic in a novel, unproven area of Information Retrieval using character n-grams to deal with spelling errors, garbles, and multiple languages in text.
Q: Please tell us a little about the trajectory of your career and what you are working on now.
I was in research and development positions for the first two thirds of my career. During that time, I led research and development programs for information retrieval, knowledge representation, and storage, knowledge distillation, and knowledge access and sharing. For the last 10 years I have been responsible for the recruitment, retention, and continued technical health and growth of computer scientists at NSA.
Q: What has been the greatest success in your career? The greatest challenge?
My greatest success was my choice of dissertation topic in a novel, unproven area of information retrieval. This work became the foundation for a series of tools and advances in flexible garble-resistant text retrieval applications.
My greatest challenge was in standing up the office of my current position, NSA/CSS Senior Computer Science Authority. This was a new position and as such, I had to develop the mission and function, goals, and strategic plan for the organization as well as secure the funding and positions to support it. My significant accomplishments in this current position include: (1) the establishment of a computer science development program; (2) the creation and establishment of technical workforce metrics and roadmaps; (3) the creation of new computer science courseware, workshops, and other offerings for the agency’s technical community; and (4) spearheading a university outreach program for computer science.
Q: What are your proudest personal achievements?
I’m an avid quilt maker, and trumpet player. I’ve shown my quilts in juried international competitions and have competed nationally in trumpet competitions. I play trumpet in the Frederick Symphony Orchestra and the Montgomery Village Community Band.
The views and opinions expressed are those of the affiliate and do not reflect those of NSA/CSS.
