Jack Engeman: Photographing the 20th Century

<Tagline>Come see Engeman's photos in person at Special Collections</Tagline>

John T. “Jack” Engeman may be one of the most prolific photographers that you’ve never heard of. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1900, Engeman graduated from the Naval Academy in 1924, remaining in the service for 17 years. At the outbreak of World War II, he returned to the Academy to teach engineering where he served for the duration of the war. After his time in the service, Engeman dedicated himself to photography, working on contract for the government, several airlines such as TWA and American, as well as the Baltimore City School system, among others. In his work with the airlines he saw the world, but in his work with the school system, Engeman was a witness to the impact of the 1954 Brown vs. Education decision which initiated the integration of public schools here at home. In his career, Engeman authored 12 photo essay books, and captured countless scenes of Baltimore and the world around him. His photographic and painted works were featured in a number of exhibitions, including several at the Peale Museum and the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery. Engeman remained an avid photographer until his death in 1984.

The AOK Special Collections department is home to a massive collection of Jack Engeman’s books, photographic and painted works, and many of his original negatives in a wide variety of formats, from glass slides to Kodak Discs, and a massive assortment of color slides.

Images in the collection not only span mediums, but time, housing photographs from the turn of the century into the 1980's. There are a number of images of the photographer as a young man, taken between 1900 and 1930, as well as pictures taken of his own children and grandchildren from the 1940's to the 80's. The collection also contains original prints from his books (published in the 1950's and 60's), picture stories about working life- following priests, doctors, nurses, stewardesses, military officers and more- aiming to help young adults choose a career path.

Submissions for the 2014 Idea Competition are open!

<Tagline>Got ideas? Let's Hear them!</Tagline>

Have an idea on how to improve or change the world? Burning up with ideas to help the environment, society, business, your friends, social media or anything else you can dream up? UMBC wants to give you $750 for telling us your idea! How can you win cash for your innovative solution? Read on!

The UMBC Idea competition is designed to challenge you to think about problems and opportunities facing society. If UMBC is one of the most innovative schools in the nation, then UMBC students are just the kind of innovators that can really change the world. Now’s your chance to make it happen.

Submit your idea online via the entry form. And you can also grab your camera or smartphone and post a YouTube video in which you pitch your idea. The top entries will be judged, live, by a panel of professionals and alumni along with a crowd of students at the final competition held November 12, 2014, in the Sports Zone in The Commons. The top 3 winners, determined by the results of student and panel voting, will receive cash prizes up to $750.

How to Enter
To enter the competition, complete the UMBC Idea Competition Entry Form, which asks you to (i) describe a problem or opportunity, and (ii) describe your idea for addressing it. Submission forms will be limited to one page, so you will need to articulate the problem you have identified and your idea succinctly. You will also be allowed to post a video to YouTube in which you can personally pitch your idea to the campus. The videos are not required, but they are encouraged as an effective way to communicate ideas to the review committee. YouTube videos are limited to 60 seconds and creativity is encouraged. Videos longer than 60 seconds will not be considered by the judges.

For a full list of the rules, visit http://entrepreneurship.umbc.edu/competitions/umbcs-idea-competition/

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS:

OCTOBER 9, 2014 AT 5:00PM
