This semester we plan to bring you a number of great workshops, but we need your input. We've been accepting topics from some local entrepreneurs during the summer and have narrowed it down to what we think are the best. 

Now, it's up to you to vote. Tell us your top 5 workshops you'd like to see. We will then select the highest 3 or 4 to host during the fall.

Fellows will be relieved of teaching duties and, as possible and appropriate, of service duties for the Fall Semester 2015 or Spring Semester 2016, in order to pursue their proposed research programs. Each Fellow’s academic department will be compensated $6,000 for the faculty member’s release time.

Three fellowships in total will be available for tenured Associate Professors and Full Professors.

Once a month, we’ll profile one of the amazing Phonathon students working in UMBC’s call center. This week, say hello to student caller Tauqir, class of 2016.

Tauqir is from Owings Mills, MD and is working toward his degree in biology and Psychology. We sat down with Tauqir to get to know him a little better and here’s what we learned:

_DSC7075Q: Why did you choose to come to UMBC? What do you enjoy most now that you’re here?

A: [UMBC] had a wonderful pre-med program and I particularly love the diversity on campus.

Q: What activities do you enjoy outside of class?

A: When I’m not calling at UMBC Phonathon, I enjoy playing badminton, reading, socializing with friends, and spending time with my family.

Q: What do you like best about being a student caller?

A: I love being able to talk to a wide variety of alumni and hearing about their experience at UMBC. It is also very interesting to hear about how the campus has changed throughout the years.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

A: I plan on going to medical school, focusing on neuroscience and ultimately practicing neurosurgery. Eventually I want to study autism in children and how the brain is affected.

MII was created as a partnership between the State of Maryland and five Maryland academic research institutions (Johns Hopkins University; Morgan State University; UMCP; University of Maryland Baltimore; and UMBC), and is managed by TEDCO, created by the Maryland State Legislature in 1998 to facilitate the transfer and commercialization of technology from Maryland’s research universities and federal labs into the marketplace. The MII program promotes the commercialization of academic research conducted in the partnership universities. Symphony Interactive is only the second project within the humanities ever to receive an award from MII, and the first to be funded in the arts and humanities at UMBC.

Symphony Interactive provides contemporary audiences a novel way to engage with live orchestral performances. Through both text and images presented through a unique interface at the exact moment the information is most pertinent to the music, SI enables an enriched experience for users by allowing them to learn about the music and its cultural history during its performance. Acting as an informed “friend,” the app subtly provides information to enhance engagement, keeping the experience of the live performance paramount. During the grant period, the SI team will create a library for thirty of the most performed orchestral works, producing unique textual and visual information for each piece. Over the next nine months, the grant funding also will enable developing a more fully featured proof of concept application, expanding the social media extensions of the app, and performing valuable market research to aid in the commercialization process.

Our Chapter got chosen by SWE Regional Collegiate Team from Regional E to host this years' SWEet Summit, which is a day long developmental event. There will be guest speakers, networking lunch, and profession development activity. You will get a chance to meet other SWE members from 12 different schools, along with professional members from the National SWE Chapter. 

Due to the nature of the event, we are looking for volunteers that can direct the attendees from the parking lot to the Summit room. The Summit starts at 10 am so we need volunteers from 9:30 am - 10:15 am. After this, you are more than welcome to join us at the Summit. In fact, you are encouraged to join us!
