One More Public Service Announcement

So here we are at last: all of us, together. This is the week of fresh beginnings, and of getting our first taste of the community we have become with the addition of so many new members. We are just starting to discover what the new students are bringing: their energy, hopes, insights and talents, in infinite forms and shades. The new students, in turn, are just beginning to discover UMBC's wonderful culture and quirks.
One site for this discovery was the Welcome Week Public Service Announcement program (Monday in the University Center), where new students heard words of wisdom about how to take care of themselves and others in our campus community: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Step up and intervene when you see friends engaged in risky behaviors. Be thoughtful about sharing on social media. Recognize that the people around you may be carrying burdens you can't see, so be respectful. And, of course, wash your underwear.
All of this is clearly good advice, to which we want to add one more nugget of wisdom. It's an idea so deeply embedded in UMBC's culture, history and practices that you'll see it everywhere if you look closely:
UMBC is a community of people who want to make a difference, and we make it here, together: faculty, staff and students. We are thinkers, but we're also doers: scrappy, determined, creative producers of knowledge, organizations, activities, positive social change, and every aspect of what you will come to know as UMBC. We are all different, but that's the source of our power and our capacity to build: each of us contributes the passions, hopes, experiences, skills and insights that make us unique. They're the raw materials for our collective work. Each of us matters, and we're all co-creators; each of us in the spotlight, none of us merely a spectator.
This culture is as old as UMBC's first paved walkways, which the builders waited to design until they saw where people chose to walk, footprints marking paths across open fields. It is a culture that is inspiring other colleges and universities to seek inclusive excellence, and helping to fuel new visions of vibrant, democratic innovation across the nation. And now it is your culture: to explore, enjoy, and continue making.
So get involved in the myriad UMBC projects and organizations that are helping to shape this community and communities beyond the campus. Bring your whole self, your untapped potential, your still-only-half-discovered passions, your willingness to take a risk and think new thoughts. Join your unfolding story to the story of this community. Make UMBC your own, and in doing so, make it anew, better than ever.

Spotlight: Irene Chan, Ch’An Press
A terrific interview and pictures - Women's Studio Workshop
UMBC Associate Professor of Visual Arts and Asian Studies Irene Chan first came to Women's Studio Workshop in 1996 as a studio intern, then returned two years later as an Artist’s Book Resident to produce Cè, a sculptural book inspired by Chinese philosophy.
In the years since, Irene has cultivated a multidisciplinary conceptual practice, working at the intersection of print media, papermaking, installation, storytelling performance, and book arts. Her recent work stretches the physicality of the book form while exploring popular culture, racial stereotypes, autobiography, and oral history.
Irene Chan has self-published 29 limited-edition artist books as Ch’An Press and has exhibited and performed her work at over 76 venues in the last 10 years.

UMBC Postdoc for Faculty Diversity: Positions open for July 2015. Deadline Nov. 14, 2014
The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) is proud to announce a new round of the now biennial UMBC Postdoctoral Fellowship for Faculty Diversity. This postdoctoral program is a two-year in-residence fellowship that supports promising scholars committed to diversity in the academy and prepares them for possible tenure-track appointments at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). During the two-year appointment, UMBC provides teaching and research mentors and professional development opportunities across campus. Fellows also receive a stipend, health benefits, and additional funding for conference travel and the preparation of scholarly work, as well as office space with a computer, library, and other privileges at the university. The application period closes on November 14, 2014, and UMBC will appoint recent recipients of the Ph.D as Postdoctoral Fellows for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2015.

'Different ways of being sexy' could help create new animal
Since Charles Darwin wrote "The Origin of Species" more than 150 years ago, it's been known that nature's selection creates some species and ends others.
But researchers at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County suggest that another actor is responsible for driving wedges in animal populations to create new species — mothers themselves.
A study published last month in the journal Ecology Letters suggests that female creatures' sexual preferences may launch an evolutionary process that can lead to the creation of new species. Whom they choose for mates trickles down through generations in such a way that, combined with other factors, may make a population distinct from others with which it once intermingled.
It's a theory that is gaining acceptance relative to the idea that adaptation to differing environments — Darwinian "natural selection" — is mainly, if not solely, what drives evolution of new species.

New Instructional Technology Staff Start New Semester
If you’re seeing some new faces in DoIT, chances are they work in instructional technology. In March, DoIT announced Sherri Braxton-Lieber as our new Director of Instructional Technology. In July, she announced two new specialists, Holly Bielak and Mariann Hawken. They joined Tom Penniston, who worked with us part-time last year, and is now working full-time as a specialist, too. Finally, we have recently added Brad Boyle to support the International Media Center (IMC) and Scantron test scoring.
While everyone is well-versed in Blackboard, there’s a nice mix of expertise across all of the instructional technologies DoIT supports, including clickers, hybrid/blended course redesign, learning analytics and screencasting. Also, you’ll likely notice more workshops and brown bags as the new team is even holding a special drawing for people who frequent DoIT events. DoIT is pleased to announce that Brad Boyle has joined the Instructional Technology team to support the International Media Center (IMC) and Scantron test scoring. A recent graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, Brad was a German major and international studies minor who has studied and traveled extensively. He is fluent in German and basic Arabic, and has worked in a variety of non-profit, relief projects in Haiti, the Bahamas, New Orleans and West Virginia.
