CyberNEXS comes to UMBC The UMBC Graduate Cybersecurity Program is pleased to announce that it will incorporate the CyberNEXS virtual training environment within its courses and activities during AY14-15. Assistant CYBR GPD Ben Shariati was instrumental in bringing this technical capability to the CYBR program, beginning with CYBER 620 at Shady Grove this fall.

Through CyberNEXS, students are able to connect into its cloud-based “cyber range” to conduct hands-on system administration, security, research, and systems analysis activities in a sandboxed private environment capable of presenting multiple server, desktop, and other devices in a variety of networked configurations. Student activities can be scored and/or monitored for overall success and effectiveness over time.

Since 2011, CyberNEXS has served as the competitive environment for the Maryland Cyber Challenge.

CyberNEXS is provided to UMBC by Leidos, a leading cybersecurity firm supporting US government activities.

Lynne Schaefer, vice president for finance and administration, spoke to College Planning and Management about best practices for contracting housekeeping, dining, grounds maintenance and other services in higher education. College Planning and Management is a monthly journal focusing on campus safety, facilities, technology and more.

Schaefer discussed the lessons she has learned from her time at UMBC working with campus vendors and ensuring student satisfaction. She recommended establishing contracts that are descriptive and performance-based rather than prescriptive, saying, “If you are going to use outside experts then rely on their expertise.”

President Hrabowski was a guest on both NPR’s Tell Me More and WYPR’s Midday With Dan Rodricks this Wednesday, discussing mentorship and the graduation gap in higher education.

A frequent guest of Tell Me More, Dr. Hrabowski joined host Michel Martin on the show’s final Wisdom Watch segment to discuss the role of mentorship in his personal life and at UMBC. Recalling the importance of mentorship during his childhood and early career, Dr. Hrabowski discussed why mentoring is part of the culture at UMBC and how it creates a supportive environment for students and faculty. “People don’t make it by themselves,” he said. “Somebody gives them support, and that’s the point. How do we make sure that every person has that team of people who can give support?”
Dr. Hrabowski also appeared on Midday With Dan Rodricks to speak about how universities can help first-generation and low-income students graduate. Citing both traditional and innovative student support mechanisms found at UMBC, Dr. Hrabowski said that the success of students who move past life’s obstacles to reach their goals continually inspires him.

Rebuilding Manhood Applications are now available! 


What do you enjoy about being a man? What do you wish was different?
What does it mean to be a man? When and how did you learn to become a man? 

Explore these questions and more through Rebuilding Manhood. In a safe (and brave) space you will discuss gender roles, norms/variations, and build a healthy, multifaceted masculinity with other UMBC undergraduate men. Through the facilitation of UMBC staff members and a peer facilitator, you will discuss topics related to being a man parallel to other important social identities and explore ways you can be an effective ally for yourself, women, and others.

Rebuilding Manhoodis an 11-week commitment. The group will meet once a week on Fridays from 2-3:15pm beginning Friday, September 12, 2014.  Group members are expected to make all meetings and are asked to commit to some outside reading (20-30 minutes a week).


All undergraduate students who identify as men are encouraged to apply.

The IACUC recently adopted changes to the protocol application used to review and approve animal research projects. 

Changes includes:
  • administrative changes to document funding sources, IACUC review of relevant grant application pages, and animal monitoring
  • updates on information on answering the "alternatives to animal use" questions and to document more clearly the literature search 
  • additions of "field study" questions, particularly when animals are captured and then housed at UMBC.
