It is an exciting time here at UMBC, as we prepare to offer our
Summer Day Camp program for the 35th consecutive year in operation.
The UMBC Summer Day Camp has a number of unique features that make
it an outstanding experience for the boys and girls who attend. We
offer a wide variety of structured activities in which children of
all ages and abilities will be able to take part in.

Some of these activities include sports of the week,
self-defense, tennis, arts and crafts, swimming, in-house field
trips, and recreational games. The children will also take part in
traditional activities appropriate for their respective age levels.
However, emphasis will be placed on participation rather than
winning. Swimming will continue to be an important part of every
child's experience at camp. Children will have daily group swimming
lessons in the morning along with a free swim period each
afternoon!

We will be using the Retriever Activities Center (RAC) located
on our beautiful campus, which includes multiple air conditioned
gymnasiums. We are excited to be able to offer VISA and MASTERCARD
payments again this year!

The camp will operate a total of nine weeks for children
entering grades first to seventh grade. This year's sessions will
run from June 16th to August 15th. The wide
variety of activities will be under the leadership and guidance of
competent and experienced counselors.

If you would like your child to attend, please request
information and a brochure as soon as possible. Enrollment is
limited and we cannot guarantee space. Camp space is filled on a
first-come, first-served basis.

Q: Where are you from originally?

I was born in Manhattan, KS, and lived there for about 2 years (not that I remember any of it). As far as I’m concerned, I’m a born and raised Delawarean.

Q: What do you love most about UMBC?

I really enjoy how many people are willing to help you succeed in whatever it is you want to do. Everyone here really does want to know how you are doing and if there is a way they can help you. Also the squirrels are really entertaining.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I’d have to say my favorite thing about working for Alumni Relations is the people I work with. I can come in really tired and grumpy, but by the end of the day they have me laughing and smiling. There’s a lot of camaraderie and energy around here.

Q: Have you ever done anything crazy or out of the ordinary?

Well since I’m a swimmer, I have a thing for water. My dad and I both became certified scuba divers when I was ten, and a few years later we got to dive in the Epcot Aquarium in Disney! It was unbelievable. Also, this past year when I went home for Christmas, two of my friends and I went surfing on the Eve of Christmas Eve just because we could. The water temperature was about 44 degrees, but it was totally worth it.

Q: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go?

I can’t pick just one. I have a running list of where I want to go, from all over Europe to the Galapagos Islands. I’m very much a beach girl, so any place that has sunshine, sand, and cool animals and culture always appeals to me.

UMBC is an incredible and diverse community of thinkers, creators, and innovators. When we work together, we can accomplish great things.

Alums enjoy the IT & Engineering Happy Hour and Fundraiser

Case in point? Just today, a group of our Information Technology and Engineering alumni raised enough money to fund a student scholarship. They decided to shoot for $1,600, and they raised 105% of that goal with two days left in their campaign.

As they say, the proof is in the pudding. This is one story among many of the generosity of our alumni and the ways in which they change UMBC for the better each year.

As our fiscal year comes to a close today, this demonstration of support is especially timely. Gifts made now will have the most immediate impact on our students as we get to work planning for an amazing new school year.

Peters discussed the use of technology in the cutting-edge representation. “We are so used to today living through our smart phones and our iPads,” she said. “I think this is just a natural way for people of this generation to learn and to be exposed to things.”

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I introduce and welcome both Holly Bielak and Mariann Hawken to DoIT's Instructional Technology & New Media (ITNM) group. Mariann and Holly join Tom Penniston as Instructional Technology Specialists in our office.

Holly (pictured at left) comes to us from Coppin State University where she served as an Instructional Technologist and Trainer and provided assistance and support to faculty, staff and students regarding the use of technology in the classroom and workplace. She also brings experience in the classroom as an adjunct instructor in Information Technology and Education as well as both Blackboard administration and training experience. Holly earned her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies here at UMBC, her Master of Education in Instructional Technology at the University of Maryland University College, and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy in Instructional Design for Online Learning at Capella University.

Mariann brings with her from Bowie State University over 14 years of experience working with both graduate and undergraduate faculty to effectively integrate technology into the curriculum and the classroom. She has supported traditional, hybrid, and fully online course design and development and has been selected as a Blackboard MVP by the company for her expertise, experience, and use of best practices with the learning management system. Mariann has also served as an adjunct instructor in English and Communications and has two master’s degrees from the University of Maryland University College: a Master of Education in Instructional Technology and a Master of Distance Education in Teaching & Training.
