Forbes has launched a social media campaign called #MyTopCollege, which sounds like a fun opportunity for the UMBC community (e.g., OPAs, RAs, SGA reps, Honors College scholars, athletes, others) to share what makes us so distinct.

They write: "Every year Forbes ranks America’s Top Colleges based on graduation rate, student satisfaction, post-graduate success and student debt. This year we want to hear from the people who know colleges best. Students, faculty and alumni are invited to share photos, fun facts, traditions and quirks that truly happen only at their school for a chance to be featured in FORBES magazine and online as a 'Students’ Favorite Top College.'"

Here's an example offered by Forbes: "The Mesa is the place to be. SDSU is among the top 20 most diverse campuses in the country #MyTopCollege @Forbes pic.twitter.com/MNDoNoKWCj"

Please spread the word about this campaign!

On June 24, UMBC signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyushu University to promote academic and research cooperation between the two universities. The partnership will allow faculty and student exchanges and joint research projects, focusing on cybersecurity initially.

Provost Phillip Rous commented on the partnership, saying, “The academic agreement signed between UMBC and KU articulates our universities’ shared vision and intention to collaborate broadly in both research and education.”

In a new article on the value of study abroad programs, U.S. News highlights the experience of UMBC student Lemuel Sun ’15, computer science.

Sun participated in a two week study abroad program to China with Howard Community College in order to improve his language skills and visit his parents’ home country. The experience inspired him to minor in Chinese after transferring to UMBC. Sun commented on his study abroad experience, saying, "I definitely did see firsthand the importance of knowing a second language and reconnecting with my culture​.”

CBS Baltimore featured a news story on “Bearings of Baltimore Circa 1815”, a 3D representation of Baltimore during the War of 1812. Tamara Peters, from UMBC’s Imaging Research Center, led a team of researchers to study historical documents and create the 3D map.

Peters discussed the use of technology in the cutting-edge representation. “We are so used to today living through our smart phones and our iPads,” she said. “I think this is just a natural way for people of this generation to learn and to be exposed to things.”

On June 24, UMBC signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyushu University to promote academic and research cooperation between the two universities.The partnership will allow faculty and student exchanges and joint research projects, focusing on cybersecurity initially.

Provost Phillip Rous commented on the partnership, saying, “The academic agreement signed between UMBC and KU articulates our universities’ shared vision and intention to collaborate broadly in both research and education.”
