Lemuel Sun ’15, Computer Science, in U.S. News
In a new article on the value of study abroad programs, U.S. News highlights the experience of UMBC student Lemuel Sun ’15, computer science.
Sun participated in a two week study abroad program to China with Howard Community College in order to improve his language skills and visit his parents’ home country. The experience inspired him to minor in Chinese after transferring to UMBC. Sun commented on his study abroad experience, saying, “I definitely did see firsthand the importance of knowing a second language and reconnecting with my culture.”

UMBC and Japan’s Kyushu University Establish Partnership
On June 24, UMBC signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyushu University to promote academic and research cooperation between the two universities.The partnership will allow faculty and student exchanges and joint research projects, focusing on cybersecurity initially. Prof. Gougousi receives NSF award
Prof. Theodosia Gougousi, an Associate Professor in the Physics Department, has been awarded a $300K, three-year grant (ECCS-1407677) from the National Science Foundation to study the atomic layer deposition of high-quality dielectrics on two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals such a MoS2 and WSe2 for MOSFET applications. This work will be conducted in collaboration with the group of Prof Qiliang Li of George Mason University and the NIST Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST).
This grant is funded jointly by the Electronics, Photonics, and Magnetic Devices (EPMD) Program in the Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems (ECCS) and by the Electronic and Photonic Materials (EPM) Program in the Division of Materials Research (DMR). The proposal was selected from among 414 unsolicited proposals submitted to EPMD in the October - November 2013 submission window.

Summer 2014 PRAC Updates
For students enrolled in PRAC 95, 98 or 99 during Summer '14
1. Completion of the Basic Experiential Learning Info Tab is due Friday, June 27 by 11:59 pm. If you have not already completed this item, please take time to fill it out as soon as possible. You do not need to have detailed paragraphs for your Learning Objectives and Action Plan, but please ensure that your responses are thoughtful enough so we have a good sense of exactly what it is you are doing this summer.
As a reminder, to complete the Basic Info Tab:
1) Log into your myUMBC account
2) Go to the TOPICS menu
3) Click on JOBS and INTERNSHIPS
4) Click on UMBCworks
5) On the homepage of your UMBCworks account, look under MORE at the bottom of the right hand side of the screen and click on "Intern/Co-op/Research/Service Requirements"
6) Click on EDIT under your *current* internship, co-op or research placement. This will take you directly to the BASIC INFO tab.
2. Mid-placement Review: For those students concurrently enrolled in Academic Credit (e.g., HONR410, PSYC398, etc) who are in their 1st semester at their internship, please note that you are also required to set up a mid-placement conference call or visit between June 23 and July 18. These meetings may be scheduled by calling 410-455-2216. If you have been at your internship more than 1 semester or are not enrolled in credit for Summer or Fall (i.e., you are ONLY in PRAC for your internship), the Review is optional.
3. If you are not in Academic Credit for your internship currently, but are interested in this option, please email us at internships@umbc.edu and a coordinator will get back to you shortly.
4. In lieu of attending *one* Professional Development Seminar in-person, you are allowed to select one of the alternate assignments described at http://tiny.cc/SU14PRACReflection and provide your reflection using the Google form. Note you only need to do *one* of the choices. The reflection should be submitted using the form by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, August 13th. If you are required to do two seminars (i.e., this is your first semester at your current site), one of them still should be in-person at UMBC or your work site. Students who have been at their current site 3 semester or more are not required to do this assignment.
Dates for the in-person Seminars are available at: http://careers.umbc.edu/news_events/calendar.php?event_type=PRAC. Only events occurring during Summer 2014 are eligible. Mid-semester reflections are happening in the UMBC Commons this week.
Note that other seminars (occurring at your worksite or elsewhere) may also be eligible for substitution, however, you will need to contact your coordinator in advance for permission and then provide a short write-up of the event via email after the fact.
5. The remaining assignments: Student Evaluation, Placement Evaluation and Semester Report Tabs and Performance Evaluation are all due on Wednesday, August 13. These are accessed by clicking on the grey titles to the right of your experience on the Exp. Learning homepage.
The Performance Evaluation worksheet will be sent as an electronic form to the supervisor whose email you list on the Basic Info tab. If your supervisor prefers to complete this form in hard copy, you can find this document in the Documents Library of UMBCworks or in the Career Services Center myUMBC group.

Campus Plaza closing Thursday, June 26
New pedetrian routes will be open and signs posted
On Thursday, June 26, 2014 the contractor for the New Entrance Project will close the gates around the Plaza between Admin Building and the RAC.
Over the last few weeks the Project Team has been preparing the site and finalizing plans with the Maryland Department of the Environment to protect our environment during the project. Construction to the Plaza site has been approved and work can now begin. This closure will be in place until August 15, 2014, after which the work area and building entrance points will change. We will be sure to provide you with updates and new signage at that time.
The doors of buildings adjacent to the Plaza, such as Admin, the RAC and one of the entrances to Sondheim, will be closed with emergency access only. There will be signs leading occupants to the alternative building entrances.
To access the Admin building, visitors will need to use the side entrance by the coffee shop. If you plan to commute to other campus areas and buildings from the main entrance, including Sondheim and Sherman Hall, detour signs will direct you behind the Admin building and through Sherman Hall court yard. For more direct access to the main campus walkway, use the path between Admin and Sherman Hall. A temporary enclosed path adjacent the construction site has been created to the front entrance of the RAC. Administration Drive and the Admin Garage will remain open during this construction phase.
