On June 24, UMBC signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyushu University to promote academic and research cooperation between the two universities. The partnership will allow faculty and student exchanges and joint research projects, focusing on cybersecurity initially.

Provost Phillip Rous commented on the partnership, saying, “The academic agreement signed between UMBC and KU articulates our universities’ shared vision and intention to collaborate broadly in both research and education.”

In a new article on the value of study abroad programs, U.S. News highlights the experience of UMBC student Lemuel Sun ’15, computer science.

Sun participated in a two week study abroad program to China with Howard Community College in order to improve his language skills and visit his parents’ home country. The experience inspired him to minor in Chinese after transferring to UMBC. Sun commented on his study abroad experience, saying, "I definitely did see firsthand the importance of knowing a second language and reconnecting with my culture​.”

CBS Baltimore featured a news story on “Bearings of Baltimore Circa 1815”, a 3D representation of Baltimore during the War of 1812. Tamara Peters, from UMBC’s Imaging Research Center, led a team of researchers to study historical documents and create the 3D map.
