Meet Kathy. She is a Psychology major who is graduating this Spring! Her research explored parental control in the Chinese immigrant and European American context. 

After discussing my interest in cross-cultural research, Dr. Cheah recruited me as a research assistant for her Culture, Child and Adolescent Development Lab.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
While I was collecting data through conducting qualitative interviews with European American mothers for Dr. Cheah’s project, I began to develop my own research questions and decided to further examine parental control in both the Chinese immigrant context and European American context.

My career goal is to eventually conduct cross-cultural research examining the socialization and expression of emotions in families and to teach psychology in an academic setting.

Eagerly-awaited Technology Turns Garbage into Fuel

UMBC student Nicholas Pascarella created a short video on UMBC’s chess program and the current team, including its participation in the 2014 Final Four of College Chess match held at the New York Athletic Club in April.  This match has been held each year since 2001 and determines the U.S. college team chess champion.  In the 14 years that it has been held, UMBC has won six times and placed second six times.

Nicholas is a rising junior majoring in Media and Communication Studies.

UMBC graduate student Omar Shehab received a travel grant to attend two co-located events, the 14th Canadian Quantum Information Summer School and the 11th Canadian Quantum Information Student Conference. Both events are organized by the Fields Institute and will be held at the University of Guelph.

Omar is a fourth year PhD student in Computer Science working with by Professor Samuel Lomonaco. His Ph.D.research involves determining the quantum computational complexity of topological problems. He is also interested in quantum games, randomness and cryptography. This summer he will be working as a Visiting Research Assistant the USC Information Sciences Institute facility in Arlington, Virginia.

MLLI Associate Professor Sara Poggio, as the co-chair of the International Immigration Section of the Latin American Studies Association, will organize a pre-conference for the Latin American Studies Association Congress titled, “International Migration,” at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago on Wednesday, May 21. This complete day event is sponsored by the Office of the Provost at UMBC. Denis Provencher, an associate professor of MLLI, gave the keynote address at an event series, “Rethinking Homosexuality in Islam”, organized by the College of Arts and
Science at Boston University on April 21. Provencher is currently finishing a new book based on language, sexuality, Islam, and Maghrebi cultures in France. He also participated as a speaker at an event organized by the University of Miami in April honoring the work of the Moroccan writer and filmmaker Abdellah Taďa.

The Special Collections department of the Albin O. Kuhn Library, in partnership with the history department and the Center for Digital History Education, is happy to announce that the Joseph L. Arnold papers are now open for research use. The collection will be a valuable resource for researchers and students of Baltimore history.

The Joseph L. Arnold papers contain more than three decades of research on Baltimore history by the urban historian and longtime UMBC History Department faculty member. Within this collection are Dr. Arnold’s manuscripts for two works on the history of Baltimore, one organized chronologically and another thematically by ethnic/social groups. The bulk of the collection is Dr. Arnold’s extensive Baltimore subject files, mostly containing reproductions from 19th century editions of the Baltimore Sun interspersed with his hand-written notes on various topics.

Joseph Larkin Arnold (1937-2004) was a prominent urban historian and a key leader at UMBC for most of his career. Dr. Arnold joined the faculty of UMBC—then a very young institution—in 1968 after earning a PhD in social history at the Ohio State University. In his three and a half decades at UMBC, Dr. Arnold fulfilled a variety of campus leadership roles, including a term as Acting Librarian in 1979-1980.
