Helena Mentis, IS, Co-Edits a New Book on Computing in Healthcare

Mentis-150x150The Department of Information Systems is proud to announce the release of a new book co- edited by IS Faculty Helena Mentis, PhD.

The book is a “first of two volumes designed as a collective graduate guidebook for conducting fieldwork in healthcare. This volume brings together the experiences of established researchers who do fieldwork in clinical and non-clinical settings, focusing on how people interact with healthcare technology, in the form of case studies. On Wednesday, May 28 at 7am, DoIT will be performing an upgrade of the campus webmail environment on our dedicated Cyrus mail server. The current webmail environment is extremely out of date on both the hardware and software. There will be a brief 5 minute outage to transition to the new server and no data will be lost during this upgrade.  Anyone logged into webmail prior to 7am will need to restart their browser and login again.  Users of Cyrus webmail will notice a more refined interface with new colors as well as some icons that have shifted location.   Anyone wishing to try out the new Cyrus webmail environment is encouraged to login at https://webmail2.umbc.edu. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Technology Support Center at x53838.

Potomac is excited that the first official event at our new facility in the bwtech@UMBC research and technology park was a visit on April 22 from UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski, executives from Baltimore County government, and members of the press. We were able to give the group a tour, demonstrating our micro manufacturing and digital fabrication capabilities. From our advanced equipment for laser micromachining and 3D Printing technology to samples of our work, the tour demonstrated how digital fabrication impacts education, economic development, and innovation in the region.

Dr. Hrabowski commented that he was very impressed with Potomac’s manufacturing technology and was happy to welcome Potomac President and CEO Mike Adelstein (UMBC 96′) back to the University. A leader in the STEM movement nationwide, Dr. Hrabowski, has set the University on a path to becoming a powerhouse in math, science and engineering.  Potomac has set in motion an Education Initiative for collaboration with universities nationwide, but the new location makes joint projects with UMBC faculty, staff, and students especially powerful.
