Nine advance in UMBC startup competition

<Tagline>By Sarah Gatz, Reporter- Baltimore Business Journal</Tagline>

University of Maryland Baltimore County graduate Greg Cangialosi is helping current students follow in his footsteps as a technology entrepreneur.

Cangialosi is a co-founder of Betamore, a startup resource center in Baltimore, and most recently was named CEO of online ticket sales company MissionTix.
Now, a university business competition bearing his name has selected its first group of finalists.

The Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition is designed to give teams of student entrepreneurs a taste of what it’s like to plan and launch a startup. Nine finalists in the competition have been paired up with business mentors, who will help them refine their ideas for an April 24 pitch session. First prize is $5,000 in startup funding.

Cangialosi said the goal of the tech-focused business competition is to help young entrepreneurs connect to resources and learn about the area’s technology community before they graduate. Hopefully, this will help students see the value of the Baltimore-area’s tech scene and encourage them to grow their business locally.
The companies still in the running are at various stages of development, but all are intended to bring their product or service to market.

    Here are the finalists:

VastCare LLC, which is designing technology to help older adults monitor and manage chronic health conditions

EduPal, which is working on a time management skills tool for students

Vintage Ten, a website and online marketplace for wine tasting

Parkat, which is developing a college campus parking application

Compared Care, which is developing a program that allows users to compare the medical procedure costs at various locations

Textbook Swapper, a platform for students to buy and sell school materials from one another

RetTech, which is developing a product called VICI, a Voice Interactive Computer Interface

InSource, a web-based recruiting tool for students and faculty

Choosing Baltimore to Build a Tech Startup

<Tagline>By Renny McPherson, Co-Founder, RedOwl Analytics</Tagline>

When debating the merits of various cities in which to locate our tech startup two years ago, the biggest question my co-founders and I asked people was, "What makes a particular city a good place to start a tech company with big ambitions?" The answers that resonated most were 1) access to talent; 2) a hub of other tech companies doing innovative work; 3) proximity to bigger tech companies who could be partners; 4) access to investors with vision; and 5) an entrepreneur-friendly local government. After two years here, I can't imagine a better place to start and grow our company than the one we chose: Baltimore, the Charm City.

True, more established tech scenes have all these ingredients and draw serious talent that produces a virtuous cycle for tech companies. Baltimore may not have reached quite the same critical mass of a San Francisco or New York, but we saw that it had all the right fundamental characteristics, and an emerging start-up scene that would serve us well.

Here's a deeper look at those five fundamental reasons to choose a city in which to start your tech company, and how Baltimore has met each one for us.

1. Access to Talent. Academic institutions like Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, the Maryland Institute College of Art, and a host of other universities in the nearby Washington, D.C. area mean that there are plenty of engineers and designers graduating with Ph.Ds, master's and bachelor's degrees each year. Many of these graduates would like to stick around, but have historically had to chase jobs in other cities. All we had to do was provide an exciting company and fulfilling work environment, and people were happy to stay in the city and region they care about.

Not only do university graduates abound, but there is a very deep pool of experienced software developers, mathematicians, statisticians, and business executives available as well. As many people know, Baltimore, Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. are the epicenter of government spending, in particular on defense and intelligence programs. The continuing trend towards lower defense spending has created a large supply of mid-career professionals interested in private-sector work.

2. Emerging tech environment and 3. Access to bigger companies. Though we've had more than one set of friends pick up from Maryland to move their companies to Silicon Valley and Boston, our four-floor building in the Federal Hill neighborhood is a testament to Baltimore's emerging tech environment. Our 20+ person startup is housed on the second floor; on the third floor is ZeroFox, another high-growth startup that emerged from its beginnings in the fourth-floor incubator, Betamore. Betamore houses a number of innovative startups, education workshops, happy hours for entrepreneurs, and is also home to the Baltimore detachment of Uber. And it's not just our building. Baltimore has over 60 of Inc. magazine's 5,000 fast-growing companies. SourceFire, based near Baltimore, went public in 2007 and sold for $2.7 billion to Cisco in 2013. In addition, the expansion of established local companies, like apparel-maker Under Armour, has helped draw more talent to our city.

On a deeper level, the people of Baltimore possess the kind of values we try to exhibit at our company. It's a hard-working, humble town with something to prove. People and companies look out for one another here in Baltimore and celebrate each other's accomplishments with (almost) as much enthusiasm as a Ravens playoff run. That's right in line with our company's core values.

4. Proximity to investors. Baltimore-based angels were some of our first investors, and they understood our vision from the start. Early on, they referred technical talent to us, showed up for company strategy sessions, and helped us hone our sales pitch. Local later-stage investors, many of whom were tech bankers at the storied Alex. Brown & Sons bank, have helped us craft our growth strategy and provided us with extensive contacts in prospective partner and client companies.

5. Entrepreneur-friendly government. The state of Maryland announced $84 million in investment for the 'innovation economy' just a month after we settled on Baltimore in March 2012. After that good omen, we entered the inaugural InvestMD challengein 2013 and won our IT software/hardware category. The competition itself forced us to better define our company strategy, and the $100,000 prize for first place went towards hiring more technical talent. TEDCO's Propel Baltimore Fund also provided early financing for our company, which enabled us to build our product and recruit great talent.

Now two years in, the benefits we hoped for have been exceeded, and we've also realized several other local advantages that have helped us grow.

1) Allowing time for strategy. Staying 'outside the noise' of so many companies scrambling to be heard in other tech hubs has allowed us to plan deeply, and come to market with a product that has been thought through deeply and authentically.

2) Close enough to regularly see our clients -- and co-workers in our satellite office. For in-person meetings, we're just a 2.5 hour train ride from Manhattan, where most of our current clients and many of our prospective targets are headquartered, and less than an hour from Washington DC - when the Beltway is cooperating. We've also created a small satellite office in Lower Manhattan that houses some great NYC-based software developers.

3) Reasonable cost of living. Apartments in San Francisco rent for more than twice as much as apartments in Baltimore, with even higher markups for office space. Evengroceries in Boston are almost 20 percent more expensive than in Baltimore.

4) Getting in on the ground floor. Because there are not hundreds of other tech startups vying for influence, talent and attention, being located in Baltimore has allowed us to take on a leading role in the city's emerging startup scene, and be part of the good news coming out of this burgeoning tech hub.

Baltimore is not the first place that jumps to most people's mind when they think of a thriving, early-stage tech ecosystem. And for good reason: It's not an established place for tech entrepreneurship. But with with all of the right elements in place, and a local business environment and government that generously support their neighbors here in Charm City, it is increasingly becoming one.

Further Reading

The Abell Foundation produced a report on entrepreneurial ecosystems that has hundreds of great references in its bibliography: "Learning from Boston: Implications for Baltimore from Comparing the Entrepreneurial Ecosystems of Baltimore and Boston."

Potomac Photonics Educational Manufacturing Initiative, who works to
connect Universities and companies in a way that maximizes progress in
the development of cancer research and therapy devices. Discuss this news story at 3DPrintBoard.com.

Fiberight begins construction of waste processing facility

By Erin Voegele | March 28, 2014

Waste-to-energy
firm Fiberight LLC is beginning construction of its waste processing
facility in Marion, Iowa. “We are now building,” said Craig Stuart-Paul,
chief executive of the company, noting that workers are scheduled to be
     onsite April 7.

On March 20, the Marion City Council approved a resolution to
establish a development agreement with Fiberight, which includes tax
increment financing (TIF) payments not to exceed $850,000. Prior to the
vote, the city council held a brief public hearing on the matter.
Development of the waste processing facility is expected to support the
creation of 27 new jobs in the community.

Stuart-Paul noted that the development agreement with Marion is one
of several fundraising components that are now allowing the project to
move forward. “The biggest issue for us has just been money, but we’ve
been able to stitch together a bunch of equity and tax credits, tax
incentives, grants and loans to make it a reality,” he said, commenting
on Fiberight’s journey to develop its commercial scale waste-to-ethanol
    project.

The Marion facility will be one element of the company’s hub and
spoke approach. According to Stuart-Paul, Winbco has been selected as
the general contractor for the project, while Amec was named
    construction management engineer.

“We are providing an alternative waste disposal solution for the city
of Marion and Cedar Rapids,” Stuart-Paul said. Trucks will deliver
trash to the facility, where it will be partially process before it is
shipped to the Blairstown facility for conversion into ethanol. In
addition to isolating biofuel feedstock from municipal solid waste (MSW)
Fiberight’s technology also separates recyclable components, such as
plastics and metals. The company is in negotiations to build a similar
waste recycling plant in Iowa City.

Both the Marion waste sorting facility and the Blairstown ethanol
plant are expected to be operational this year. Stuart-Paul noting that
his company has more than 4,000 hours of experience operating the
technology, which was gained as its demonstration facility in Virginia.
“We know that all of the unit operations, the integration, all the core
elements work very well,” he said.

Potomac Photonics On the Front Line in Fight Against Cancer

(PRLEAP.COM) Potomac Photonics
has partnered with many companies and universities to help them develop
and manufacture parts that are being used in both cancer research and
therapy. A recent project for Sloan Kettering Institute included a 3D
printed mold fabricated by Potomac Photonics. The new method for
microfabrication of this integral part eased a bottle neck in the
    research process.

According to Maxime Deforet, the Program Director at Sloan Kettering
Institute, "These Acrylic 3D-printed prototypes are molds, subsequently
used for PDMS microfabrication. PDMS microchambers are now broadly used
for biology and biomedical applications. However, development of such
microfabricated devices (often based on photolithography) can be a
bottleneck as it requires costly equipment and long process cycles.
Acrylic 3D printing allows rapid prototyping of microfluidic assay for
moderate price. In particular, the mold shown here is used to make a
PDMS microchamber for cancer cell growth in a controlled environment.
MSKCC provides patient care and conducts cancer research."

This project was partly funded by Potomac Photonics Educational
Manufacturing Initiative which is a program, focused on creating robust
partnerships with universities and research institutes in order to
develop new products and manufacturing technologies.

Potomac Photonics continues to be on the front line in the fight against
cancer by providing a broad range of manufacturing technologies

    About DB Networks
DB Networks is innovating behavioral analysis
technology in the field of database security. Developed for
organizations that need to protect their data from advanced attacks,
including Zero-Day attacks, DB Networks offers effective
countermeasures against SQL injection attacks. Database attacks
happen rapidly -- in a matter of minutes -- and bypass traditional
perimeter security measures. DB Networks' unique approach uses
behavioral analysis technology to automatically learn each
application's proper SQL statement behavior. Any SQL statement
dispatched from the application that deviates from the established
behavioral model immediately raises an alarm as a possible attack. DB
Networks is a privately held company headquartered in San Diego,
Calif. For more information, see http://www.dbnetworks.com

Ayasdi Partners With Cloudera

<Tagline>To Enable Real-Time Query-Free Analysis of Massive Data</Tagline>

Ayasdi Certified on Cloudera Enterprise 5 to Discover Insights That Will
Help Solve the World's Most Challenging and Expensive Problems

MENLO PARK, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/04/14 -- Ayasdi (www.ayasdi.com) today announced that it is certified on Cloudera
Enterprise 5. This certification ensures that Ayasdi's solution has
been tested and validated to work with Cloudera Enterprise 5, Cloudera's
platform for big data built on Apache Hadoop.

From a technical perspective, Ayasdi leverages CDH 5's Hadoop
Distributed File System (HDFS) for managing large amounts of customer
data and uses HBase for storing some of its operational metadata that is
     randomly accessed and frequently updated.

"Most large global organizations require that their real-time data
streams are always available because shortening the 'time to insight'
from massive amounts of data is what sparks ideas that drive innovation
in today's fast-paced competitive environment," said Shane Paladin, Vice
President, Worldwide Sales at Ayasdi. "Working with Cloudera is a
natural fit given that we have many joint customers who want to leverage
the best of both platforms. Together, we look forward to helping them
discover cures to diseases, new sources of oil and energy, identify new
    sources of fraud, and beyond."

"We welcome Ayasdi into the Cloudera Connect partner program as the
company provides a unique solution," said Tim Stevens, Vice President,
Business and Corporate Development. "With Cloudera's tools, resources,
and deep domain expertise, Ayasdi's customers can now leverage Cloudera
Enterprise to build an enterprise data hub -- one place that provides
robust security, comprehensive data management, corporate governance,
and open support -- to uncover the hidden insights in their data,
    without formulating queries or models."

Ayasdi is transforming how the world uses data to solve complex
problems. Founded in 2008 after a decade of research at Stanford, DARPA,
and NSF, Ayasdi is pioneering a new approach for enterprises to
automatically discover and operationalize insights from their data.
Ayasdi's Insight Discovery platform uses Topological Data Analysis (TDA)
combined with an ensemble of machine learning techniques to enable data
scientists, domain experts, and business people to achieve value from
their data without the need to write code, queries, or ask questions.
Funded by Khosla Ventures, Institutional Venture Partners, GE Ventures,
Citi Ventures, and FLOODGATE, Ayasdi's customers include General
Electric, Citigroup, Merck, Anadarko, U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the University
of California San Francisco (UCSF), and Mount Sinai Hospital. To learn
