What is the color of beauty?

For decades the world of fashion was inhabited solely by white women. But as western society has become more racially diverse so have the models inhabiting the catwalks and fashion shoots.

Now a major luxury brand has chosen a woman of color to be the face of the company.

The Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has been recently named an ambassador for Lancôme. She will be a high profile member in the elite world of high-end fashion and beauty advertising. 

This could be a start of a new trend.

It is projected that by 2050 in the United States, women of color will make up 53 percent of the female population. If this projection is accurate, then it seems only natural that the beauty industry would change its representatives accordingly.  

However, Nyong’o, in accepting her endorsement, was careful to emphasize that, 

“beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself.”

Lynne Schaefer, vice president for finance and administration, was interviewed by The Business Officer in an article about the limited availability of public funds for higher education.

The article recognizes UMBC as a best value university and discusses Maryland’s push for affordable higher education. Five years ago, Maryland had the eighth highest tuition in the country. Now, the state has the 26th highest tuition in the nation.

If these times do not work for you, then schedule an appointment (you can call the office, stop by the office, or use UMBCworks to schedule an appointment yourself).

After your resume has been approved, then you can begin applying.

After Thursday, May 22, the My Documents folder on lab computers will be disabled for storing files. Instead, DoIT recommends using Box (box.umbc.edu) for storing all of your files.  Combined with a new local vs. network profile, disabling the My Documents folder is expected to decrease login times on lab computers.  

In terms of personal storage, Box provides anytime, anywhere access and is available from desktops, laptops and mobile devices. Of course, lab computers will still support personal USB flash or “thumb” drives, too. For more information on Box, please visit the “Help” menu at the bottom of the Box login page at box.umbc.edu.

After May 22 any stored files will no longer be accessible and any future files stored in My Documents will not be saved.  Any data stored in the My Documents folder prior to May 22, 2014, will be available for one year, but recovery will only be possible by submitting an RT ticket by visitinghttp://my.umbc.edu/help or contacting our Technology Support Center at x53838.
