Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is the first smartphone that can use a fingerprint to authorize payments in stores and online.

Anyone with an iPhone 5 can use its fingerprint reader to unlock the device and pay for apps or music in Apple’s iTunes store. Owners of Samsung’s latest flagship device, the Galaxy S5 smartphone, which launches on April 11, will be able to make much broader use of their fingerprints to pay for things. If they visit a website or app that accepts PayPal using the device, they can authorize payments by swiping a finger across the phone’s home button. And PayPal’s own mobile app can be used to pay for goods in some physical stores in the U.S.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates
in Green Building Environments at UMBC

May 28 – August 15, 2014

New emerging “smart plugs” embed a micro-controller and low-power
communication device that allows you to monitor the power consumption of
individual devices (e.g., microwave, coffee machine, laptop) plugged
into power sockets, and communicate such power consumption information
over a wireless network to a central monitoring station. Such devices
could lead to substantial savings of energy & money by enabling
Internet-based monitoring & real-time control of the behavior of
individual appliances. This project will use real-life microcontroller
kits (ACME Plugs from Moteware) & real-life building measurement
data to explore whether such measurement-based monitoring can be used to

Develop Smart Circuit Breaker — i.e., to lessen the burden of the
user of plugging each and every appliance/device in the building with a
smart plug; we will investigate connecting multiple devices together
with an individual smart plug/smart circuit breaker and design a smart
circuit breaker using energy metering chip (ADE7753), AC/DC power
supply, Microcontroller with radio (TI MSP430F16 and Cypress Powerline
Communications (PLC) modem) and solid state AC relay (Sharp S216SE1)
    etc.

Profile individual devices — i.e., use NILM (non-intrusive load
monitoring) data analytics algorithm on the time-series of power
consumption traces to infer the type of plugged-in device (e.g.,
distinguish between a laptop & a coffeemaker), thereby building a
dynamic catalog of the types & number of devices connected by a
    consumer.

Predict the power consumption of individual rooms — i.e., using the
past history of the power consumption of individual devices to create
predictive inferences of the usage patterns for individual devices
(e.g., learn that the individual switches on a dehumidifier for ~3 hrs
    every Thu).

Receive $4,500 stipend, free on-campus housing

Access to university resources, Travel support to UMBC, Unique research experience

Please send your CV (include any relevant experience) and unofficial transcript to Dr. Nirmalya Roy at nroy@umbc.edu .

OVERVIEW:

The Maryland Department of the Environment is seeking a student intern to work on environmental justice (EJ) initiatives related to quality communication with communities and other stakeholders. The primary objectives are (1) to assist a student to complement his/her academic career with work-place experience, (2) to formulate a pilot program focused on environmental justice and community outreach, (3) develop and edit communication pieces regarding EJ and communities, and (4) assist with upkeep of the EJ portion of the MDE website.

INTERNSHIP:

The internship will be an unpaid, credit bearing academic/work related experience. The intern is expected to work at least 10 hours a week on the project over the course of the semester.

PROJECT GOALS:

MDE would like an intern to research and develop a community outreach tool for communities affected by various environmental issues.

1. Pilot Project: This will be a pilot project implemented in a few communities. The first phase of this project will be to research how different communities prefer to receive information, i.e. community meetings, community newsletters, etc. The second stage of the project will focus on consolidating and analyzing this research while developing a tool for surveying communities about their interests and preferred methods of communication. In the third stage of the project, the student will implement the survey tool to determine the preferences of the various pilot communities and then analyze the results. Ultimately, the Department would like to be able to use this tool repeatedly as communities express interest in projects and/or issues of concern.

2. Assist the Office of Environmental Justice & the Office of Communications in editing, drafting, and revising brochures for stakeholders about MDE programs and processes as it relates to EJ.
